In coastal eco-industrial zones, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and constructed wetlands (CWs) can alleviate the challenge of water shortage and the negative effect of sewage discharge, while the problems of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have not attracted enough attention. In this research, the Wafergen SmartChip system was adopted to investigate the ARG profiles in a coupled system combined WWTPs and CWs in a coastal industrial park. Potential risks of antibiotic resistance in chemical industrial wastewater were confirmed due to the higher abundance of target ARGs (> 107 copies/mL)

The rapid increase in urbanization and intensive coal mining activities have accelerated the deterioration of surface water quality. Environmental problems caused by the accumulation of nitrate and sulfate from natural, urban, and agricultural sources have attracted extensive attention. Information on nitrate and sulfate sources and their transformations is crucial for understanding the nitrogen and sulfur cycles in surface water. In this study, we monitored nitrate and sulfate in three representative rivers in mining cities in northern China. The main pollution sources and biogeochemical proc

Stream and riparian zone networks embedded in agricultural landscapes provide a potential intervention point to ameliorate the negative effects of agricultural runoff by reducing transport of nitrate (NO3-) and suspended sediments (SS) downstream. However, our ability to support and promote NO3- and SS attenuation is limited by our understanding of vegetative and hydrogeomorphic controls in realistic management contexts. In addition, agricultural landscapes are heterogenous on multiple management scales, from farm field to regional water management scales, and the effect of these heterogeneiti

UNLABELLED: Intestinal dysbiosis is implicated in alcoholic hepatitis (AH). However, changes in the circulating microbiome, its association with the presence and severity of AH, and its functional relevance in AH is unknown. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of changes in the circulating microbiome were performed by sequencing bacterial DNA in subjects with moderate AH (MAH) (n = 18) or severe AH (SAH) (n = 19). These data were compared with heavy drinking controls (HDCs) without obvious liver disease (n = 19) and non-alcohol-consuming controls (NACs, n = 20). The data were related to en

Organic carbon bioreactors provide low-cost, passive treatment of a variety of environmental contaminants but can have undesirable side effects in some cases. This study examines the production of methyl mercury (MeHg) in a streambed bioreactor consisting of 40 m³ of wood chips and designed to treat nitrate (NO₃) in an agricultural drainage ditch in southern Ontario (Avon site). The reactor provides 30 to 100% removal of NO₃-N concentrations of 0.6 to 4.4 mg L(-1), but sulfate (SO₄(2-)) reducing conditions develop when NO₃ removal is complete. Sulfate reducing conditions are known to stimulati

A field test on in situ subsurface bioremediation of uranium(VI) is underway at the Y-12 National Security Complex in the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, TN. Nitrate has a high concentration at the site, which prevents U(VI) reduction, and thus must be removed. An acidic-flush strategy for nitrate removal was proposed to create a treatment zone with low levels of accessible nitrate. The subsurface at the site contains highly interconnected fractures surrounded by matrix blocks of low permeability and high porosity and is therefore subject to preferential flow and matrix diffusion. Continuous cassava cropping can lead to soil degradation and disturbances in soil microbial functions, threatening the sustainability of cassava production systems. To address these challenges, this study examined the effects of biochar on soil physicochemical properties and microbial functional profiles in a continuous cassava cropping system. Two biochar application rates (0 and 3 Mg ha-1) were applied, and metagenomic sequencing was conducted to evaluate microbial community composition and functional genes related to carbon and nitrogen cycling in rhizosphere and bulk soils. The results dem

The ecotoxicity induced by macrolides has attracted widespread attention, but their impacts on the nitrogen metabolism and symbiotic environmental bacteria of microalgae remain unclear. This study examined the effects of roxithromycin (ROX) on the growth, chlorophyll levels, and nitrogen metabolism of Chlorella pyrenoidosa; investigated the changes in the composition and functions of environmental bacterial communities; and finally, analyzed the relationship between microalgae and environmental bacteria. The results indicated that all concentrations of ROX (0.1, 0.25, and 1 mg/L) inhibited mic

A novel aerobic methanotrophic bacterium, designated as strain IN45T, was isolated from in situ colonisation systems deployed at the Iheya North deep-sea hydrothermal field in the mid-Okinawa Trough. IN45T was a moderately thermophilic obligate methanotroph that grew only on methane or methanol at temperatures between 25 and 56 °C (optimum 45-50 °C). It was an oval-shaped, Gram-reaction-negative, motile bacterium with a single polar flagellum and an intracytoplasmic membrane system. It required 1.5-4.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2-3 %) for growth. The major phospholipid fatty acids were C16 : 1ω7c,

Metal(loid)s can promote the spread and enrichment of antibiotic resistance in the environmental ecosystem through a co-selection effect. Little is known about the ecological effects of entering antibiotics into the environment with long-term metal(loid)s' resistance profiles. Here, cow manure containing oxytetracycline (OTC) or sulfadiazine (SA) at four concentrations (0 (as control), 1, 10, and 100 mg/kg) was loaded to a maize cropping system in an area with high a arsenicals geological background. Results showed that exogenous antibiotics entering significantly changed the nutrient conditio

Flue gas not only contains carbon dioxide (CO2) but also air pollutants (sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)). The effective utilization of flue gas could help us to reduce the cost of microalgal biomass production. This study assessed and explored the utilization of flue gas for the absorption characteristics of different components and their biological effect in microalgal culture systems. In abiotic absorption experiments, the absorptivity of CO2 was reduced by a maximum of 3.1%, and the concentration of the available carbon source in the culture medium was decreased by 6.7% when

Salivary glands concentrate plasma nitrate into saliva, leading to high nitrate concentrations that can reach the millimolar range after a nitrate-rich vegetable meal. Whereas human cells cannot reduce nitrate to nitrite effectively, certain oral bacteria can. This leads to an increase in systemic nitrite that can improve conditions such as hypertension and diabetes through nitric oxide availability. Apart from systemic benefits, it has been proposed that microbial nitrate reduction can also promote oral health. In this review, we discuss evidence associating dietary nitrate with oral health.

Pollution induces pressure to soil microorganism; and conversely, the degradation of pollutants is reported largely regulated by the soil microbiome assembly in situ. However, the specific-dependent core taxa of degraders were barely confirmed, which is not conducive to improving the soil remediation strategy. Taking pollution of a typical organochlorine pesticide (OCP), lindane, as an example, we explored the microbial community assembly in flooded soils and simultaneously quantified the corresponding dynamics of typical soil redox processes. Contrasting initial status of microbial diversity

Sludge retention time (SRT) is an important factor affecting not only the performance of the nutrient removal and sludge characteristics, but also the production of secondary pollutants such as nitrous oxide (N2O) in biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes. Four laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), namely, SBR5, SBR10, SBR20 and SBR40 with the SRT of 5 d, 10 d, 20 d and 40 d, respectively, were operated to examine effects of SRT on nutrient removal, activated sludge characteristics and N2O emissions. The removal of chemical oxygen demand or total phosphorus was similar under

BACKGROUND: Maintenance of an anaerobic denitrification system in the obligate human pathogen, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, suggests that an anaerobic lifestyle may be important during the course of infection. Furthermore, mounting evidence suggests that reduction of host-produced nitric oxide has several immunomodulary effects on the host. However, at this point there have been no studies analyzing the complete gonococcal transcriptome response to anaerobiosis. Here we performed deep sequencing to compare the gonococcal transcriptomes of aerobically and anaerobically grown cells. Using the informat

Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in cell signalling and in the mammalian immune response to infection. On its own, NO is a relatively inert radical, and when it is used as a signalling molecule, its concentration remains within the picomolar range. However, at infection sites, the NO concentration can reach the micromolar range, and reactions with other radical species and transition metals lead to a broad toxicity. Under aerobic conditions, microorganisms cope with this nitrosative stress by oxidizing NO to nitrate (NO3−). Microbial hemoglobins play an essential role in this NO-detox

Azo dyes wastewater contains refractory pollutant and nitrogen, which threatens human health and ecological environment when discharged into environment directly. Electron shuttle (ES) is able to participate in the extracellular electron transfer, and thus enhances the removal efficiency of refractory pollutant. However, the continuous dosing of soluble ES would rise operation cost and cause contamination inevitably. In this study, a type of insoluble ES (carbonylated graphene oxide (C-GO)) was developed and melt blended into polyethylene (PE) to prepare novel C-GO-modified suspended carriers.

The drilosphere is a biogeochemical hotspot, but its role in biochar-assisted remediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil remains unclear. Comparisons were made between fresh (RS) and aged rice straw (ARS) biochar treatments at different Cd contamination levels to assess their effects on the drilosphere microenvironment. The results showed that ARS biochar was more effective in forming a low‑Cd, high‑nutrient hotspot, reducing total Cd in burrow wall soil (BWS) by 13.42% and increased TOC, TN, and TP by 17.89%, 76.16%, and 132.36% (P < 0.05). Enzyme activity followed BWS > lightly disturbed
