The aim of our study was to report the frequency of sensitization to hairdressing allergens in a group of patients with contact dermatitis, in whom previous treatments with hair dyes or permanent wave solutions were suspected to be the cause. 49 of 261 hairdressers' clients (18.7%), who were patch tested with the hairdressers' screening series in the years 1985-1990, showed one (27) or more (22) positive reactions to hairdressing chemicals. Although Type I allergy to chironomids is well-known, allergic contact dermatitis caused by these cosmopolitan insects has not previously been reported. In the case we describe in this report, patch tests disclosed a delayed-type hypersensitivity to 4 different species of chironomids (larvae of Chironomus thummi, Chironomus plumosus, and 2 different species of Glyptotendipes) as the probable cause of airborne facial contact dermatitis. Before 1960, eosin sensitivity was not rare and lipstick cheilitis was very common. We report 4 patients seen in 1988 and 1989 who were sensitized to eosin from topical bacteriostatic preparations. All 4 patients had positive patch tests to eosin. The allergen is probably an impurity rather than eosin itself.

A patient with rhinitis developed systemic contact dermatitis when starting oral treatment with Rhinalair, containing pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. A few months later, another oral treatment Rinutan, containing norephedrine hydrochloride, provoked a more severe generalized eczema. Patch test reactions were strongly positive to ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, slightly positive to phenylephrine and negative to epinephrine. Norephedrine was not tested.

Atopic dermatitis is a genetically determined inflammatory condition in which the primary defect is expressed in one or more hematopoietic cells that infiltrate the skin. It is a multifactorial disease with inflammation triggered by a variety of factors. Six of nine adults who developed Red Sea coral contact dermatitis had seafood allergies. Contact with the "fire" coral was followed by a series of skin eruptions starting with an immediate pruritic urticaria-like lesion which forced the victims out of the water. Within minutes the affected area became erythematous and edematous with eventual blister formation approximately 6 hours after the initial contact. Naphthol AS, a coupling agent in cotton dyeing, caused allergic contact dermatitis in 5 patients, sensitized from wearing a special kind of shirt. Patch tests with Naphthol AS and pieces of shirt were positive in all 5 patients. Analysis of 1 of the shirts revealed the presence of Naphthol AS. 1 patient with hand dermatitis and positive patch tests to Naphthol AS and nickel was a needlewoman, probably sensitized to Naphthol AS from occupational contact with clothes.

A patient with malignant lymphoma repeatedly developed transient rosacea-like dermatitis several days after each interruption of continuous oral prednisone intake. We thought that the eruption was provoked by withdrawal of orally administered steroid, and thus we diagnosed the patient as having steroid-withdrawal rosacea-like dermatitis, one manifestation of steroid-withdrawal syndrome.

Because patients with atopic dermatitis are less prone to type IV allergies, there has been controversy regarding the role of patch testing in these patients. However, recent observations indicate that patch testing with standard allergens often adds valuable information about contact sensitivity in these patients.
