Occupational dermatoses contribute to a significant portion of work-related diseases, especially in Asia, where a major portion of the workforce is in the unorganized sector. This review article is focussed on the frequency and pattern of occupational skin diseases reported across Asian countries and type of allergens implicated in different occupations. The literature was searched systematically using key words 'occupational dermatoses,' 'occupational skin disease' and name of each Asian country. Ninty five full-text articles were considered relevant and evaluated. Some of the dermatoses seen

Nickel allergy in women has been thoroughly studied: its prevalence, the most important sources of sensitization, and risk factors for elicitation of dermatitis. Preventive measures have also been introduced. Nickel allergy in men has not, however, been equally focused on. Based on clinical experience, some publications indicating that tools may be a risk factor for nickel allergy and hand eczema in men, and the fact that large occupational groups regularly use tools, we decided to carry out a study, of the prevalence on the market of tools that release nickel. 27% of 565 hand-held tools with

A physiotherapist working in hydrotherapy presented to occupational health with irritant contact dermatitis. Subsequent investigation revealed that the likely causative agent was 1-bromo 3-chloro 5,5 dimethylhydantoin which was used to disinfect the hydrotherapy pool. A COSHH risk assessment had been performed which failed to take full account of current knowledge and this agent had been introduced into the workplace. The development of adverse health effects among staff and other pool users lead to a review of this risk assessment and eventually a return to less hazardous chlorine-based disin

One of the mechanisms responsible for occupational dermatoses of constructors in contact with Cr-containing substances is supposed to be antibodies production as a result of Cr ion migration in the blood. The authors' measurements led them to the conclusions that no significant rise in blood Cr content occurs with an increase in the service duration, there is a close relationship between Cr blood concentrations and specific skin tests as well as between blood Cr and allergic manifestations. In patients with initial and established forms of occupational dermatosis the number of positive respons

Norbormid used as zoocide (rodenticide) can produce an irritating and allergenic effect when acting on the skin. A case of contact dermatitis is described on a woman who poured over pesticide solution in order to make poisonous pesticides for rodents. The solution got on the skin of her hands, right crus and left forearm. There the signs of acute skin inflammation appeared along with the clinical picture of chronic dermatosis caused by the solution irritating characteristics. The degree of pesticide sensitivity was determined by means of a drop test, 1%-norbormid alcohol solution being used. P

Although subtle barrier defects may facilitate allergen penetration, thereby enabling allergic sensitization, the relationship between sweating disturbance and skin barrier function is unknown. However, many studies on contact hypersensitivity in mice examined ear skin, which does not sweat, instead of the footpad, where sweating is uniquely present. In this study, we assessed whether sweat suppression in the footpad before hapten application provoked a skin barrier abnormality and reduced inflammatory thresholds to topical haptens. Mice without any genetic skin barrier dysfunction displayed m

In the course of an ongoing cohort study on constitutional and occupational risk factors for the development of irritant hand dermatitis in hairdressing apprentices, an increased prevalence of irritant skin changes was noted in a subgroup examined during particularly cold winter months. Prompted by this observation, the importance of several meteorological factors (day means of temperature, relative and absolute humidity) was assessed in extensive statistical analyses based on data of 742 participants, supplemented by meteorological information obtained from the German Meteorological Service (

Contact dermatitis is an inflammation of the epidermis and dermis at the site of exposure triggered by external agents. The two main forms are irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, which cause significant health and socioeconomic costs in addition to a marked reduction in quality of life. The anamnesis and the clinical picture are decisive for the necessary diagnostic measures. The most accurate possible diagnostic classification of contact dermatitis by means of allergological testing is important for disease management, since not only classical eczema therapy but also avoidance of the ex

Sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) (Fig. 1) are an important cause of allergic plant contact dermatitis but are uncommon in the Far East. They belong to the Compositae family of plants. Sensitivity to SL may be airborne or via the topical route [topical herbal remedies, cosmetic products, and in many occupations such as gardeners and florists].

The period after which skin changes appear is discussed, as well as localisation of their earliest appearance and allergens characteristic for physicians, dentists, nurses, veterinary surgeons and assistants, photographers and hair- dressers . Photographes handling coloured developers were found to be more exposed to dermatosis than those handling black and white ones. Ladies' hair- dressers suffer more frequently than gentelmen 's and nurses coming into contact with antibiotics and disinfectants are more exposed than other nurses.

Healthcare workers are exposed to substances that may elicit allergic and irritant reactions, including anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction. We report the case of a nurse with pre-existing hand contact dermatitis who presented anaphylaxis following exposure to ceftriaxone and piperacillin/tazobactam during drug preparation. Diagnostic testing confirmed an allergy to both antibiotics and latex. The absence of prior therapeutic exposure, combined with skin barrier impairment and contact with spilled drugs, suggests occupational sensitization, most plausibly thro

INTRODUCTION: Chemicals used for the manufacturing of rubber are known causes of allergic contact dermatitis on the hands. Recent European studies have suggested a decrease in thiuram contact allergy. Moreover, while an association with hand dermatitis is well established, we have recently observed several clinical cases with allergic facial dermatitis to rubber.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate temporal trends of contact allergy to rubber accelerators from the European baseline series in a tertiary patch test clinic in Denmark, and examine associations with anatomical locations of dermatitis.

Dermatitis and nail bed disorders form a large percentage of occupational conditions that affect the hands. This article briefly discusses some of the more common causes and presentations of these conditions. Most of these of the conditions can occur in the workplace and outside of it, so a careful evaluation is necessary to determine the work relatedness of a given condition.

Irritant contact dermatitis has a broad spectrum of clinical features and is a leading cause of occupational disease worldwide. It has been shown previously that a combination of chemically different irritants may cause an additive effect compared to single application of these substances. In this study, tandem application of sodium lauryl sulfate and n-propanol was investigated in 20 human volunteers using non-invasive bioengineering methods, such as measurement of transepidermal water loss and chromametry. N-propanol did not enhance cumulative skin irritation when used with sodium lauryl sul

Contact dermatitis is a continuous growing environmental and occupational health problem. It results in high costs for health care systems and the economy due to productivity loss. Moreover, it has a huge impact on the quality of life of patients. The immune response to contact allergy is very complex and not totally elucidated. Recently unique pathways preferentially activated by different allergens were identified. As for a lot of chronic itch disorders, antihistamines are ineffective for allergic contact dermatitis, suggesting a non-histaminergic itch. The precise mechanisms that underlie t

Acrylates are synthetic thermoplastic resins used in a multitude of products, ranging from bone cement to artificial nails. They represent an important and increasing cause of both occupational and nonoccupational allergic contact dermatitis. Isobornyl acrylate, an acrylic monomer found within ultraviolet-cured inks, adhesives and various medical devices for diabetes, has emerged as an important sensitizer. In addition, long-lasting nail products have played a significant role in the increased prevalence of acrylate allergy. Sensitized individuals classically present with facial or eyelid derm

Paraphenylenediamine is a common cause of occupational dermatoses in hairdressers, metallurgy workers, and others. Hand dermatitis developed in an employee of a milk packaging facility. The employee's hands were exposed to milk cartons embossed with wet printer's ink on a daily basis for 2 years. The worker was evaluated through a history, physical examination, and patch testing with 50 standard allergens. Patch testing revealed a positive reaction to paraphenylenediamine. The hand dermatitis resolved once the patient instituted protective measures. The worker's reaction might represent a dela
