Ferulic Acid Attenuates Aortic Stiffening and Cardiovascular Remodeling by Suppressing Inflammation and the Renin-Angiotensin System in Rats Fed a High-Fat/High-Carbohydrate Diet.

BACKGROUND: Ferulic acid (FA) is an antioxidant compound present in cereals, fruits, and vegetables. Chronic consumption of a high-fat and high-carbohydrate (HFHC) diet can lead to metabolic syndrome and increase the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This study examined whether FA could mitigate vascular inflammation, aortic stiffness, and cardiovascular remodeling in rats fed a HFHC diet. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups (eight rats/group): one group was fed a standard chow diet with or without FA supplementation, while the others were fed a HFHC

2:1 ketogenic diet and low-glycemic-index diet for the treatment of chronic and episodic migraine: a single-center real-life retrospective study.

AIMS: The evidence supporting the efficacy of dietary preventive therapy in migraine is rising, particularly regarding the ketogenic diet. However, less evidence exists for the Low-Glycemic Index Diet and the 2:1 KD. This retrospective single-center real-life study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a 2:1 ketogenic diet and a Low-Glycemic-index Diet in chronic and high-frequency episodic migraine. METHODS: Sixty patients with high-frequency episodic and chronic migraine were treated with either a Low-Glycemic-index diet (39 patients) or a 2:1 (21 patients) ketogenic diet for three months. We co

"A Vegetarian vs. Conventional Hypocaloric Diet: The Effect on Physical Fitness in Response to Aerobic Exercise in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes." A Parallel Randomized Study.

It has been shown that it is possible to modify macronutrient oxidation, physical fitness and resting energy expenditure (REE) by changes in diet composition. Furthermore, mitochondrial oxidation can be significantly increased by a diet with a low glycemic index. The purpose of our trial was to compare the effects of a vegetarian (V) and conventional diet (C) with the same caloric restriction (-500 kcal/day) on physical fitness and REE after 12 weeks of diet plus aerobic exercise in 74 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). An open, parallel, randomized study design was used. All meals were prov

Evenly Distributing Daily Dietary Protein Across Three Meals Reduces Women's Snack Food Reinforcement and Intake of Energy-Dense Snack Foods During Weight Loss: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: High-protein, energy-restricted diets support weight loss and maintenance; however, whether consuming a moderate amount of protein in a balanced distribution throughout the day reduces the reinforcing value (RV) and energy intake of energy-dense snack foods is not known. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of 2 patterns of protein distribution during weight loss on (1) the relative reinforcing value (RRV) of energy-dense snack foods compared with the RV of a nonfood alternative; (2) energy intake when presented with snack foods; and (3) potential moderators of adheren

Impact of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Status on Changes in Reproductive Function During a Hypocaloric Dietary Intervention.

Background/Objectives: Lifestyle interventions are first-line treatment for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to improve metabolic health. Impacts on reproductive function are less clear. Previous research has been limited by inconsistencies in evaluation of ovulatory function and lack of comparisons between women with and without PCOS. Methods: The present study implemented a prospective clinical trial of 28 women (PCOS, N = 10 and Non-PCOS Control, N = 18) undergoing a 1-month baseline assessment followed by a 6-month hypocaloric dietary intervention. Results: Both groups reached c

Effects of replacing meat and fish with pulse intake on circulating fibroblast growth factor-23 levels during a 12-week dietary weight-loss intervention using the Four-Food-Group Point Method: a pilot randomized controlled study.

Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a phosphaturic hormone secreted by the bone in response to dietary phosphate intake. High circulating FGF23 levels is an early sign of cardiovascular disease in individuals with obesity. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of replacing meat and fish with pulse intake on circulating FGF23 levels during a dietary weight-loss intervention. Sixteen middle-aged and older individuals with overweight and obesity (63.7 ± 5.1 years of age) were randomly assigned to control and plant groups. All participants attended a dietary weight-loss clas

Pharmacotherapy in Conjunction with a Diet and Exercise Program for the Treatment of Weight Recidivism or Weight Loss Plateau Post-bariatric Surgery: a Retrospective Review.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is an effective therapeutic option for management of obesity. However, weight recidivism (WR) and weight loss plateau (WLP) are common problems. We present our experience with the use of two pharmacotherapies in conjunction with our standard diet and exercise program in those patients who experienced WR or WLP. METHODS: From June 2010 to April 2014, bariatric surgery patients who experienced WR or WLP after undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), and who were treated with phentermine (Ph) or phentermine-topira

Diet and exercise improve chemoreflex sensitivity in patients with metabolic syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: Chemoreflex hypersensitity was caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study tested the hypothesis that hypocaloric diet and exercise training (D+ET) would improve peripheral and central chemoreflex sensitivity in patients with MetS and OSA. METHODS: Patients were assigned to: (1) D+ET (n = 16) and (2) no intervention control (C, n = 8). Minute ventilation (VE, pre-calibrated pneumotachograph) and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA, microneurography) were evaluated during peripheral chemoreflex sensitivity by inhalation of 10% O

Osteosarcopenic obesity and fall prevention strategies.

Sarcopenia, obesity, and osteoporosis are three interrelated entities which may share common pathophysiological factors. In the last decades, overall survival has drastically increased. Postmenopausal women, due to their estrogen depletion, are at higher risk of developing any of these three conditions or the three, which is termed osteosarcopenic obesity. One of the most common health problems among these patients is the elevated risk of falls and fractures. Falls and fall-related injuries are one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in older adults, and have a significant impact on

Comparative effectiveness of weight-loss interventions in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and its cardiovascular complications are extremely common medical problems, but evidence on how to accomplish weight loss in clinical practice is sparse. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled trial to examine the effects of two behavioral weight-loss interventions in 415 obese patients with at least one cardiovascular risk factor. Participants were recruited from six primary care practices; 63.6% were women, 41.0% were black, and the mean age was 54.0 years. One intervention provided patients with weight-loss support remotely--through the telephone, a study-specif

Mortality in severe sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome patients: impact of treatment.

The aim of this study was to determine mortality in patients with sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) according to the treatments employed and comorbidity. An historical cohort of patients with SAHS diagnosed at a university hospital between 1982 and 1992 and followed until 1996 was studied. From a total of 475 SAHS patients, 444 (94%), with a mean+/-SD apnoea/hypopnoea index at diagnosis of 55+/-27, were located and included in the study. SAHS treatments employed were: surgery (88), weight loss (134), continuous positive airway pressure (124) and 98 patients were not treated. By the end of

Cognitive style of patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Nine female patients with anorexia nervosa and 7 female patients with bulimia nervosa were assessed on the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT). This study found that subjects with bulimia nervosa responded more quickly than did the anorexic subjects. Results such as these suggest that not only are bulimic patients more behaviorally impulsive than anorexic patients, they are also more cognitively impulsive. Patients with anorexia nervosa in contrast seemed to display a reflective cognitive style. Extreme cognitive styles may contribute to resistance in treatment and/or relapse in anorexia or

Personality disorder and treatment response in bulimia nervosa.

Thirty-nine female out-patients with bulimia nervosa were assessed for personality disorders using the PAS. All subjects then entered a therapeutic trial, comprising eight weeks of cognitive-behavioural therapy with follow-up after eight weeks and at one year. Thirty-nine per cent of the patients were diagnosed as having personality disorders. Patients with personality disorders were more depressed and had a lower BMI than those without. They also had a significantly poorer response to treatment, but the difference between groups did not reach significance when mood and BMI were controlled for

Abnormal eating attitudes in London schoolgirls--a prospective epidemiological study: outcome at twelve month follow-up.

The occurrence and course of eating disorder in a large representative population of 15-year-old London schoolgirls has been assessed using a two-stage survey methodology. Attempts to control weight were common and often transient. Dieting was in the great majority of girls found to be a benign practice without progression to more extreme concerns about food and weight. However, a small proportion of dieters did become cases and formed the majority of new cases found at follow-up. The relative risk of dieters becoming cases was eight times that of non-dieters. Many factors conventionally assoc

1985 NHIS findings: nutrition knowledge and baseline data for the weight-loss objectives.

A nutrition objective for the nation is that, by 1990, 50 percent of the overweight population should have adopted weight regimens, balancing diet and physical activity. More than half of the overweight respondents in the 1985 National Health Interview Survey were trying to lose weight, and almost half of this group reported both increasing their physical activity and decreasing their intake of calories. Dietary restriction without exercise was the next most common weight-loss regimen, suggesting that educational efforts should emphasize the need to increase physical activity as part of approp
