Surface microbiological surveillance in a crowded emergency department: interplay of environmental pressure, construction, and disinfection efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Environmental surface contamination in emergency departments (EDs) is a recognized contributor to pathogen transmission. However, its relationship with organizational and environmental stressors remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: Between January and November 2025, monthly microbiological surface surveillance was conducted in a tertiary ED with approximately 70,000 annual visits. Standardized sampling using contact plates (25 cm2) targeted predefined sites, including high-touch surfaces, equipment, and walls. Indicator organisms included Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus

Fibroblast growth enhancement and antibiotic-free disinfection via microneedles with self-powered electrical stimulations.

Fibroblast growth and sterilization are two critical factors for tissue repair, particularly in infected chronic wounds. Electrical stimulation improves the efficiency of tissue repair by accelerating the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts, but preventing infection in the tissues typically requires the use of antibiotics. In this work, a self-powered nanodevice is fabricated for producing electrical stimulations for antibiotic-free disinfection. It integrates a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and a PLA-Au-PPY microneedle (MN) array. The TENG generates an output voltage of up to 6 V,

Advancing the identification of toxic by-products in disinfected water by integrating effect-directed analysis and nontarget screening.

The disinfection of drinking water inevitably generates disinfection by-products (DBPs), potentially jeopardizing human health. While previous research has mainly focused on risk from regulated DBPs, recent studies have indicated that these known compounds can only explain a small fraction of toxicity observed in disinfected water. Identifying toxic DBPs is therefore a critical step forward. Effect-directed analysis (EDA) has emerged as a promising tool for identifying the toxicity drivers in complex mixtures. Here, we examined the potential and challenges of applying EDA to identify toxic DBP

Aerosol-based disinfection protocol for aircraft: a solution for the conflict between material compatibility and antimicrobial efficacy.

UNLABELLED: Every year, billions of passengers, pets, and livestock are transported by air, which increases the risk of a global spread of pathogens like severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 1 and 2, H1N1 influenza, the Ebola virus, and foot-and-mouth disease virus. However, due to its complexity and high safety standards, aircraft decontamination is limited to manual surface disinfection, and an approved method for disinfecting otherwise inaccessible areas is still unavailable. To address this issue, we present the development and validation of an effective room disinfection method u

A framework predicting removal efficacy of antibiotic resistance genes during disinfection processes with machine learning.

Disinfection has been applied widely for the removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to curb the spread of antibiotic resistance. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is the most used method to quantify the damage of DNA thus calculating the ARG degradation during disinfection but suffers the deviation due to the limitation of amplicon length. In contrast, transformation assay more accurately measures ARG deactivation based on expression of disinfected ARG in the receiving bacteria but is typically laborious and material-intensive. This work applied machine learning (ML) to deve

Deprotonation-Constructed Instant Gelation Coating for Staphylococcus Disinfection and Preservation of Fresh Food in Multiple Scenarios.

The ancient proverb "disease enters through the mouth" elucidates the connection between food and pathogens, underscoring the pivotal role of food preservation in preventing foodborne diseases. Drawing inspiration from ancient food preservation techniques such as waxing and the use of spices, a novel approach combining the deprotonation-induced solid-liquid phase separation of natural polymer solutions with the solubilization of plant-derived antibacterial compounds has been developed. The "two-step soaking" construction strategy enables the creation of biodegradable and adaptable for hydrogel
