In Belgium, between 1991 and 1992, seven women under the age of 50 years were admitted to a regional renal dialysis unit with progressive renal failure. All seven had been following the same slimming regimen, prescribed by the same clinic. They had an identical pattern of interstitial fibrosis on renal biopsy. Coring is reported to occur because rubber pieces are shaved off from a rubber stopper when a needle is inserted into the rubber stopper of transfusion liquid formulation. We verified whether coring really occurs in insulin vials of self-injecting patients. We collected insulin cartridges from 30 hospitalized patients and used the primary injection (trial injection), the secondary injection and the cartridge remaining preparation as samples. In this paper the percentage purity, active ingredients, specific gravity and the pH of paracetamol and chloroquine syrups were determined. For paracetamol the percentage purity ranged from 102.6-106.67, while the active ingredients (in mg/5 ml base) ranged from 123.2-128. Levamisole is used as an agent to increase the total weight of street cocaine. We report the case of a 28-year-old female who presented with multiple painful, ulcerating lesions. She tested positive for cocaine and levamisole. Her skin lesions improved with abstinence from cocaine. Patients with levamisole-induced toxicity most often present with skin manifestations or joint pain. Leukopenia, neutropenia, and agranulocytosis are common lab abnormalities seen in these patients.
