Can mobile-health applications contribute to long-term increase in physical activity after medical rehabilitation?-A pilot-study.

Due to the positive effects of rehabilitation declining over time, the aim of this study was to investigate the long-term physical activity level (PAL) following inpatient rehabilitation in relation to the use of a smartphone-based after-care program. 202 patients (mean Body Mass Index (BMI): 30,8 kg/m2; 61% female) with chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes mellitus, obesity, chronic low back pain, depression) were recruited between 08/2020 and 08/2021 in this single-arm observational study. All patients underwent a 3-week inpatient rehabilitation program. PAL (in total activity minutes/week) was

Trajectories of reward availability moderate the impact of brief alcohol interventions on alcohol severity in heavy-drinking young adults.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral economic theory predicts that low access to environmental reward is a risk factor for alcohol use disorder (AUD). The Substance-Free Activity Session (SFAS) is a behavioral economic supplement to standard brief alcohol interventions that attempts to increase environmental reward and may therefore have beneficial effects, particularly for individuals with low levels of environmental reward. METHODS: Participants were 393 college students who reported at least 2 heavy-drinking episodes in the past month. Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 conditions following a

Behavior changes & disease prevention: MCW research shows effectiveness of HIV/AIDS risk reduction interventions. Medical College of Wisconsin.

Many of the diseases that cause premature illness and death--including some cancers, heart disease, and AIDS--could be prevented if persons made behavior changes to reduce their risk for developing the illnesses. Over the past two decades, there have been great advances in our scientific understanding of how to promote health risk behavior change. This paper briefly reviews elements and examples of effective behavior change interventions, including programs that can be offered in service settings as well as community-level interventions. The prevention of diseases through behavioral public hea

The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) and Youth Depression - In Context.

OBJECTIVE: The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) system is a valuable framework for researchers seeking to understand the mechanisms underlying psychopathology. Although RDoC provides guidance for studying biological and behavioral mechanisms, it offers relatively little direction for incorporating environmental variables into study designs. Consequently, RDoC studies may overlook or ignore environmental context, reducing the likelihood of evaluating possible interactions of biological and environmental processes. METHOD: The current review investigated the extent to which studies utilizing the

Household adoption of domestic water filtration for combating waterborne diseases in developing countries.

Drinking contaminated water is a leading cause of several waterborne diseases. Domestic water filtration plants are treated as one of the possible alternative tools to combat the disease caused by contaminated drinking water. Little is known about the usage behaviour of households to use water filtration plants at the domestic level in combating waterborne disease. Unveiling how different social, economic, and technological factors can mold household usage behavior to use domestic water filtration plants can be helpful in combating the spread of diseases caused by contaminated water. We have c

Shaping sustainable perceptions: The role of metaphors in Olympic news discourse.

The dissemination of sustainable development concepts in large international events like the Olympics has garnered great attention. As a major international sports event, the Beijing Winter Olympics served as an important platform for showcasing China's sustainable development philosophy through its official news coverage. In this context, metaphor, as a powerful cognitive tool, plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and facilitating the dissemination of values by mapping concrete source domains onto abstract target domains. This paper constructs a critical metaphor analysis framewo

Sleep patterns, sociodemographic correlates, and their association with economic preferences among Indian smallholder farmers.

Sleep considerably influences a wide range of daily decisions and activities, yet sleep research largely focuses on well-off populations or relies on controlled laboratory settings. This study provides a field-based perspective on sleep patterns and their relationship with economic preferences, using wrist-measured sleep data from 268 smallholder farmers near Bengaluru, India. We find that participants have relatively high sleep quality, with an average total sleep duration of 6.9 hours per day, including 6.4 hours of nighttime sleep, and 47% exhibiting daytime sleep habits. Sleep patterns var

The clinical, economic, and humanistic burden of Dravet syndrome - A systematic literature review.

Dravet syndrome (DS) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with evolving disease course as individuals age. In recent years, the treatment landscape of DS has changed considerably, and a comprehensive systematic review of the contemporary literature is lacking. Here we synthesized published evidence on the occurrence of clinical impacts by age, the economic and humanistic (health-related quality-of-life [HRQoL]) burden, and health state utility. We provide an evidence-based, contemporary visualization of the clinical manifestations, highlighting that DS is not limited to seizures; no

Factors Associated with HIV Antiretroviral Therapy among Men Who Have Sex with Men in 20 US Cities, 2014.

Reducing HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) is a national goal, and early diagnosis, timely linkage to HIV medical care, and ongoing care and treatment are critical for improving health outcomes for MSM with HIV and preventing transmission to others. We assessed demographic, social, and economic factors associated with HIV antiretroviral treatment among HIV-infected MSM. Data are from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) collected in 2014 among MSM. We estimated prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals using average marginal predictions from logistic regression. Overall

HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most severely affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Of the 40 million HIV infected individuals at the end of 2003, 26 million (65%) were living in the area. Reasons for the high infection rate include historical, political, economic, and cultural factors. The diversity of populations, combined with destitution, political and economic instability and hunger, has led to a number of strategies for combating the disease in Sub-Saharan Africa. These include voluntary counseling and testing, community involvement, facilitating behavior modifications, which include consi

Oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Chinese adults.

Only recently have behavioral aspects been taken into consideration in oral health studies in China; thus, relevant information on perceptions in adult Chinese about oral health care is inadequate. In 1996-97, a large-scale oral epidemiological study was conducted in Southern China. Among its objectives were to describe the oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the urban and rural adults living in Southern China and to analyze the influence of selected demographic and socio-economic factors. From 8 urban and 8 rural communities in Guangdong Province, 1,573 35- to 44-year-olds and

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to bovine tuberculosis in Benin: a mixed One Health survey among farmers, veterinarians, and butchers.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is an underrecognized zoonotic disease in sub-Saharan Africa affecting health, food security, and livelihoods. In Benin, research mainly detects it in animal products and carcasses, but behavioral and sociocultural factors related to exposure and transmission are poorly documented. In areas with livestock farming, pastoral mobility, human-animal interactions, and unsafe animal product consumption, assessing knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is crucial for understanding transmission within a One Health approach. This study aimed

[Importance of therapeutic education in Parkinson's disease].

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic illness characterized by multiple motor and non-motor symptoms that impact the quality of life of patients and their families. PD requires a patient-centered therapeutic approach. Therapeutic patient education (TPE) is an effective response to this challenge. TPE is a structured, person-centered learning process that supports patients in self-monitoring and self-management of their health by drawing on their own resources. It promotes behavior changes from the moment of diagnosis and throughout the disease course. Patients take an active role in their own

Development and validation of a multifactorial treatment outcome measure for eating disorders.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a brief self-report inventory which could be used to evaluate treatment outcome for anorexia and bulimia nervosa. The Multifactorial Assessment of Eating Disorders Symptoms (MAEDS) was constructed to measure six symptom clusters which have been found to be central to the eating disorders: depression, binge eating, purgative behavior, fear of fatness, restrictive eating, and avoidance of forbidden foods. The factor structure of the MAEDS was found to be stable and it was found to have satisfactory reliability and validity. Normative data were col

Unconditional cash transfers to improve health behaviors among primary care patients: a qualitative sub-study of a randomized clinical trial.

Unconditional cash transfers are a popular poverty reduction approach and may influence behavioral risk factors for chronic disease outcomes through economic and psychological pathways. Few studies have used qualitative interviews to identify the mechanisms through which cash transfers delivered in a health care context might influence the health of people living with chronic diseases in the United States. We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to identify pathways through which unconditional cash transfers may influence health and assess the acceptability and feasibility of such an
