Supporting Transition and Practice Readiness Through Nursing Clinical Externships: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Globally, new graduate nurses face persistent transition challenges and high turnover rates that threaten workforce stability and patient care quality-issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical nurse externship (CNE) programs have emerged as structured experiential learning models that bridge the academic-practice gap through mentorship and clinical immersion. METHOD: Following the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses-Scoping Reviews framework, a comprehensive literature search was c

Female Sexual Anatomy Training in Medical Education-Are We Adequately Preparing Our Students for Patient Care?

For the last century, medical texts often have omitted or ignored the clitoris and its role in female health. Only in the last 30 years has a comprehensive description of the anatomy of the area been elucidated. Despite research establishing the clitoris's essential role in the orgasmic functioning of females, valid concerns exist about the extent to which physicians are trained about this important component of anatomy. In the broader context of medical training about female sexual anatomy and function, both undergraduate and graduate education are inadequately preparing learners for clinical

Evidence for Greater Forensic Education of all Psychiatry Residents.

Booth and his colleagues have made an important contribution to the emerging evidence base that shows education in forensic psychiatry topics can improve attitudes toward the field. Given the desinstitutionalization of those with severe mental illness from state psychiatric facilities and the incarceration of many individuals with severe mental illness in correctional facilities, the need to train many more psychiatrists with competence in correctional settings is clear. Simply training more forensic psychiatrists will not both meet the psychiatric needs of incarcerated patients and fulfill th

Orofacial pain education in dentistry: A path to improving patient care and reducing the population burden of chronic pain.

Dentists stand in an optimal position to prevent and manage patients suffering from chronic orofacial pain (OFP) disorders, such as temporomandibular disorders, burning mouth syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, persistent idiopathic dentoalveolar pain, among others. However, there are consistent reports highlighting a lack of knowledge and confidence in diagnosing and treating OFP among dental students, recent graduates, and trained dentists, which leads to misdiagnosis, unnecessary costs, delay in appropriate care and possible harm to patients. Education in OFP is necessary to improve the quality

25 Years of Progress: ELNEC and AACN Transforming Palliative Nursing Education.

In the year 2000, leaders with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing joined with Dr. Betty Ferrell and her colleagues at City of Hope to address gaps in how nurses are educated to care for patients at the end-of-life and their families. The collaborators launched a far-reaching train-the-trainer initiative, the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), which resulted in competencies, guidelines, and nursing curricula developed to prepare nurses to provide evidence-based, skilled, and compassionate palliative care. The 25th anniversary of ELNEC celebrates the tremendous effort

The Readiness Imperative: Leveraging Large Animal Resident Research to Enhance Expeditionary Surgical Skills.

INTRODUCTION: The Defense Health Agency aims to ensure that military surgical residents have the expeditionary general surgical skills necessary to deploy to a combat environment and maintains the Clinical Investigation Programs (CIPs) that foster research during graduate medical education. This project evaluates the potential to achieve both aims simultaneously through a large animal Combat Casualty Care Research Program (CCCRP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Large animal experimental protocols within a single CIP's CCCRP were collected from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2022. Operations performed were

Psychological well-being of surgery residents before the 80-hour work week: a multiinstitutional study.

BACKGROUND: Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education work-hour restrictions are aimed at improving patient safety and resident well-being. Although surgical trainees will be dramatically affected by these changes, no comprehensive assessment of their well-being has been recently attempted. STUDY DESIGN: A multicenter study of psychological well-being of surgical residents (n = 108) across four US training programs before implementation of the 80-hour work week was performed using two validated surveys (Symptom Checklist-90-R [SCL-90-R] and Perceived Stress Scale [PSS]) during acade

External validation of simulation-based assessments with other performance measures of third-year anesthesiology residents.

INTRODUCTION: There has been interest in the use of high-fidelity medical simulation to evaluate performance. We hypothesized that technical and nontechnical performance in the simulated environment is related to other various criterion measures, providing evidence to support the validity of the scores from the performance-based assessment. METHODS: Twelve third-year anesthesia residents participated in a series of 6 short 5-minute scenarios and 1 longer 30-minute scenario. The short scenarios measured technical skills, whereas the longer one focused on nontechnical skills. Two independent ra

Blended learning with Moodle in medical statistics: an assessment of knowledge, attitudes and practices relating to e-learning.

BACKGROUND: Blended learning that combines a modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment (Moodle) with face-to-face teaching was applied to a medical statistics course to improve learning outcomes and evaluate the impact factors of students' knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) relating to e-learning. METHODS: The same real-name questionnaire was administered before and after the intervention. The summed scores of every part (knowledge, attitude and practice) were calculated using the entropy method. A mixed linear model was fitted using the SAS PROC MIXED procedure to analyse th

Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Emergency Training in Undergraduate Medical Education: Global Status, Gaps, and Curriculum Reform Priorities.

Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) emergencies, such as airway obstruction, severe epistaxis, and foreign body aspiration, are frequent and potentially life-threatening conditions commonly encountered in clinical practice. Despite their prevalence, emergency training in ENT remains insufficient in undergraduate medical education worldwide. This study explores the current status of ENT emergency education, highlighting key gaps and proposing strategies for curriculum reform. Evidence indicates that medical students often graduate with limited competence in managing acute ENT presentations due to short

The changing face of dental education: the impact of PBL.

The past decade has seen increasing demands for reform of dental education that would produce a graduate better equipped to work in the rapidly changing world of the twenty-first century. Among the most notable curriculum changes implemented in dental schools is a move toward Problem-Based Learning (PBL). PBL, in some form, has been a feature of medical education for several decades, but has only recently been introduced into dental schools. This paper discusses the rationale for the introduction of a PBL pedagogy into dental education, the modalities of PBL being introduced, and the implicati

Supervisory psychological support and graduate student creativity: a serial mediation model.

Extant research has examined the link between supervisory support and graduate student creativity (PGC), yet the underlying psychological and social mechanisms remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study, grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), examined a serial mediation model in which supervisory psychological support is positively associated with PGC through a sequential two-stage statistical pathway: first via its association with the quality of leader-member exchange (LMX), and subsequently via a positive team innovation climate (TIC). We surveyed 363 full-time graduate students

Education needs in palliative care and advance care planning of Italian residents in neurology: an online survey.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Most neurological diseases have a chronic and progressive clinical course, with patients living for extended periods with complex healthcare needs. Evidence from other countries suggests that palliative care (PC) is insufficiently integrated in the care of these patients. This study aims to identify PC and advance care planning (ACP) knowledge and the perceived preparedness of Italian residents in neurology. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional online survey of physicians attending the 36 Italian neurology residency programmes. RESULTS: Of 854 residents, 188 (22%) parti

Using a Nature-Based Mindfulness Intervention to Improve Mental Health in Nurse Anesthesia Students: A Pilot Study.

Resident registered nurse anesthetists (RRNAs) face high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) due to the academic, clinical, and financial demands of graduate anesthesia education. Nature-based mindfulness, which integrates nature exposure with mindfulness practices, has shown promise in reducing psychological distress but remains underexplored among RRNAs. This single-arm pilot, pre-/posttest study evaluated the effectiveness of a nature-based mindfulness intervention (NBMI) on DAS in a cohort of third-year RRNAs in the southeastern United States. The 8-week intervention included g

The Evolving Digital Landscape of Gastroenterology Fellowship Recruitment.

Social media has rapidly transformed communication, education, and professional networking within graduate medical education. Increasingly, residency and fellowship applicants rely on social media platforms to evaluate training programs, particularly to gain insights into program culture, trainee experiences, and educational environments that may not be easily conveyed through traditional program websites. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the adoption of social media by both applicants and training programs, highlighting its growing role in recruitment and outreach. Gastroenterology f

Position of the American Dietetic Association: Promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) that exclusive breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition and health protection for the first 6 months of life, and breastfeeding with complementary foods for at least 12 months is the ideal feeding pattern for infants. Breastfeeding is also a public health strategy for improving infant and child health survival, improving maternal morbidity, controlling health care costs, and conserving natural resources. ADA emphasizes the essential role of dietetics professionals in promoting and supporting breastfeeding by providing up-to-date, pr
