A comprehensive analysis of the impact of head model extent on electric field predictions in transcranial current stimulation.

Objective.MRI-based head models are used to predict the electric field (E-field) in the brain in transcranial current stimulation. The standard field of view of clinical MRI often only covers the head down to the skull base, which has usually lead to models truncated at the level of the nose. Although recent pipelines can artificially extend the head model to the neck, the need for implementing full head models preserving skull holes such as the foramen magnum remains controversial. The objective of this work is to analyse the impact of head model extent on E-field accuracy, with emphasis on s

Patient-Specific Electric Field Simulations and Acceleration Measurements for Objective Analysis of Intraoperative Stimulation Tests in the Thalamus.

Despite an increasing use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) the fundamental mechanisms of action remain largely unknown. Simulation of electric entities has previously been proposed for chronic DBS combined with subjective symptom evaluations, but not for intraoperative stimulation tests. The present paper introduces a method for an objective exploitation of intraoperative stimulation test data to identify the optimal implant position of the chronic DBS lead by relating the electric field (EF) simulations to the patient-specific anatomy and the clinical effects quantified by accelerometry. Effects of transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation on drug use and responses to cue-induced craving: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation (TEAS) avoids the use of needles, and instead delivers a mild electric current at traditional acupoints. This technique has been used for treating heroin addiction, but has not been systematically tested for other drugs of abuse. This study aims to investigate the effects of TEAS on drug addiction. METHODS: Volunteers who were either cocaine-dependent (n = 9) or cannabis-dependent (n = 11) but were not seeking treatment for their dependence participated in a within-subject, single-blind study. Treatment consisted of twice daily 30-minut

Treatment of distal radius fractures with a wrist-bridging external fixation: the value of alternating electric current stimulation.

The radiological and functional outcomes of two groups of comminuted intraarticular fractures of the distal radius that were treated with wrist-bridging external fixation, with or without an alternating electric current stimulation (EF + ES or EF group, respectively), were compared. The radial length, radial inclination and palmar tilt were measured on radiographs taken immediately after removal of wrist external fixator and also after bone union had occurred. Furthermore, active range of motion was compared at the final consultation. Bridging callus was observed earlier postoperatively in the

Diagnostic relevance of transcranial magnetic and electric stimulation of the facial nerve in the management of facial palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Earlier investigations have suggested that isolated conduction block of the facial nerve to transcranial magnetic stimulation early in the disorder represents a very sensitive and potentially specific finding in Bell's palsy differentiating the disease from other etiologies. METHODS: Stimulation of the facial nerve was performed electrically at the stylomastoid foramen and magnetically at the labyrinthine segment of the Fallopian channel within 3 days from symptom onset in 65 patients with Bell's palsy, five patients with Zoster oticus, one patient with neuroborreliosis and one pat

Effects of thoraco-lumbar electric sensory stimulation on knee extensor spasticity of persons who survived cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

Spasticity is mostly due to an excess of impulses to alpha motor neurons partly resulting from a change of interneuron activity. Low threshold afferent has been reported to change the activity in interneuron. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of surface spinal paravertebral stimulation on knee extensor spasticity. Ten survivors of stroke, with knee extensor spasticity, received electric stimulation for five 45-minute periods through surface electrodes applied to the skin in the twelfth thoracic and first lumbar areas. The electric stimulations had an amplitude modulated a…

A wearable functional electrical stimulation device with a movable electrode for motor point tracking.

Functional electrical stimulation is widely applied in the rehabilitation of individuals with cerebrovascular disease or spinal cord injury but is limited by rapid muscle fatigue. We present a novel stimulation strategy based on real-time motor point tracking using a wearable functional electrical stimulation device with a movable electrode. A crank-slider mechanism drives the electrode to follow the biceps brachii motor point trajectory according to elbow joint angle, aiming to optimize stimulation site and reduce fatigue. Seven healthy male participants compared this approach with time-shift

Universal and differential effects of prefrontal transcranial electrical stimulation on convergent and divergent thinking.

Creativity is a high-level cognitive process that includes convergent and divergent thinking. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) are key nodes of the executive control system and are implicated in creativity. Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) techniques, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), have been shown to modulate creative thinking. However, most existing research is focused on the stimulation of single brain regions or unilateral hemispheres, and comparative effects of va

Neural Gastric Electrical Stimulation: Future Prospects in Managing Gastric Emptying Disorders.

Neural gastric electrical stimulation (NGES) is a multi-channel high-energy gastrointestinal stimulation technique that directly activates cholinergic motor neurons to evoke contractions that improve gastric emptying. NGES stimulation superimposes on spontaneous electromechanical activity to generate coordinated propagating contractions. In contrast, the most commonly applied form of gastric electrical stimulation (Enterra), employs paired pulses that stimulate vagal afferent pathways to reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting, but does not enhance emptying. This review examines the evolution a

Comparing Electrical and Ultrasound Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Associative Memory.

OBJECTIVES: Associative memory, the ability to bind and retrieve relationships between unrelated elements, is a cornerstone of human cognition and a primary target for neurorehabilitation. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a promising method to modulate the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system and hippocampal-prefrontal circuits essential for memory. However, the comparative efficacy of noninvasive modalities such as electrical transcutaneous VNS (E-taVNS) and the emerging field of ultrasound (U-taVNS) remains poorly understood in the context of active recall.
