Human activities have significantly altered natural habitats, changing the behavior of many animals. As human encroachment on natural habitats increases, animals must adapt their behavior to couple with these rapid environmental changes. The landscape of fear (LOF) refers to prey perception of risk, which leads to behavioral adaptations throughout an animal's lifetime. Animals might choose habitats with lower potential energy intake and lower perceived risk over those with higher potential energy intake and higher perceived risk, thus trading off food quality for safety. Here, we investigate w

INTRODUCTION: Blood vessel glycosylation at the fetomaternal interface of four near-term specimens of tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii, has been examined at days 23-26 of the 26.5 day pregnancy and compared with that of other species.
METHODS: A panel of 23 lectins was used to compare vasculature in tammar with non-mammalian (shark, skink) and eutherian species at early and late gestation (camel, horse and alpaca), and term/near-term (cat, lion, dog, mink and elephant).
RESULTS: Strikingly low levels of all the glycans tested, apart from sialic acids, were found in capillary endothelium of b

Fenestration of the septum between the true and false lumen might be necessary after aortic dissection. We report the technical aspects of in situ laser fenestration of the aortic dissection septum. Two illustrative cases are provided: a 56-year-old man with false lumen deployment of a frozen elephant trunk graft, and a 67-year-old man who underwent fenestrated endovascular aortic repair with a target branch vessel off the false lumen. In both cases, the septum was crossed using in situ laser fenestration. This technique is a precise option to enable passage between true and false lumens durin

A 70-year-old man had an acute type B aortic dissection 9 years before his admission. The last enhanced computed tomography that was performed revealed an aneurysm that extended from the ascending aorta to the aortic arch, associated with a chronic aortic dissection, which extended from the aortic arch to the left external iliac artery. His visceral arteries originated from the false lumen. We performed a total arch replacement with a frozen elephant trunk in the hybrid operating room. Immediately after the circulatory arrest termination, using intraoperative angiography, we verified that the

We discuss a patient who presented with a type B aortic dissection with a retrograde progression in the context of sickle cell anaemia. Given the involvement of the superior mesenteric artery and concern for bowel ischaemia, a delayed approach was considered. Subsequently, a frozen elephant trunk was performed in the hybrid theatre with the back-up of the vascular surgeon for mesenteric protection. A technically demanding procedure followed by a prolonged and challenging postoperative course finally led to a successful outcome. We argue that the case presented is an example of how a close coop

BACKGROUND: A Kommerell diverticulum (KD) and aberrant subclavian artery (ASA) are an aortic vascular anomaly.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a KD with a right ASA and two asymptomatic thoracic saccular aortic aneurysms in an 83-year-old man, which were treated with a total arch replacement, frozen elephant trunk technique, and staged thoracic endovascular aortic repair.
CONCLUSIONS: Some reports on the treatment of a KD and ASA have been reported thus far in the literature. However, it is considered rare to find two asymptomatic thoracic saccular aortic aneurysms coexisting with a KD in

A 60-year-old man without any symptoms was referred to our department because computed tomography revealed an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) and a saccular aortic aneurysm arising opposite to the ARSA. We performed the following procedures through a median sternotomy: total arch replacement, insertion of a frozen elephant trunk to exclude the aneurysm and ARSA, placement of a vascular plug under transesophageal ultrasonography to occlude the dilated ARSA, and right axillary artery bypass. Postoperative computed tomography showed complete occlusion of the ARSA and exclusion of the aneu

We present herein a novel, combined, simultaneous open proximal and stent-graft distal repair for complex distal aortic arch aneurysms involving the descending aorta. In the first surgical step, the transverse arch is opened during selective antegrade cerebral perfusion, and a Dacron graft (DuPont, Wilmington, DE) is positioned down the descending aorta in an elephant trunk-like fashion with its proximal free margin sutured circumferentially to the aorta just distal to the left subclavian or left common carotid artery. With the graft serving as the new proximal landing zone, subsequent endovas

A patent distal false lumen after repair of type A aortic dissection often poses serious late complications. We present a successful repair of dissecting aortic aneurysm through left thoracotomy, extending from the ascending to descending thoracic aorta after composite graft replacement of the aortic root. Although staged operations, including the elephant trunk procedure, are usually chosen for remaining extensive aortic disease after replacement of the aortic root or the ascending aorta, a single-stage repair from the ascending to the descending thoracic aortas through left thoracotomy can b

The evolution of surgical replacement of the aortic arch has been shaped by advances in surgical techniques and ancillary technologies. From the early pioneering attempts in the 1950s by Ho Ju Lin, Cooley, and DeBakey, which preceded the advent of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), the development of perfusion, cerebral protection, and surgical techniques, along with the evolution of prosthetic grafts, has progressively enabled surgeons to address these challenging conditions with greater confidence. Despite these remarkable advancements, aortic arch surgery still remains one of the most technicall

Limited information exists on how different forage cactus genotypes affect mineral metabolism in lambs. This study evaluated the effects of partially replacing elephant grass hay and fully replacing ground corn with three forage cactus genotypes on mineral intake, absorption, and tissue deposition in lambs. Forty uncastrated Santa Inês crossbred lambs (21.0 ± 2.0 kg; 6 months) were randomly assigned to four treatments (10 lambs/treatment), including a control and three experimental diets in which part of the elephant grass hay and all ground corn were replaced by forage cactus genotypes (530 g

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of ascending aortic dissection repair frequently require downstream aortic interventions. Because of a paucity of data, we assessed early and long-term outcomes, and risk factors, of these distal procedures.
METHODS: From January 1993 to January 2011, 305 patients underwent 429 distal aortic interventions after acute type A (95% DeBakey type I) dissection repair performed 3.8 years earlier (median); 11% of interventions used an endovascular approach. Maximum aortic size was 5.9 ± 1.3 cm. Median follow-up was 3.6 years.
RESULTS: Hospital mortality was 6.1%. Risk factors i

OBJECTIVES: Hybrid operations combining open and endovascular techniques have evolved for patients with complex aortic and coexisting cardiovascular disease. Our objectives were to describe the repair techniques and assess the outcomes in patients undergoing hybrid repair for aneurysm associated with previous aortic coarctation.
METHODS: From 2004 to 2012, 14 patients underwent hybrid repair by elephant trunk with endovascular completion (n = 5), frozen elephant trunk (n = 8), or antegrade stent grafting (n = 1). The mean age at surgery was 45 ± 13.5 years. Of the 14 patients, 8 underwent sup

A study conducted from July 1995 to June 1996 examining spatial and temporal distribution of mercury (Hg) at the Caballo Reservoir, New Mexico, revealed that the highest levels of methylmercury (MMHg) occurred in both the inlet and the Rio Grande upstream of the reservoir. As a result, a second study was designed to identify possible sources of the elevated levels of MMHg, and to determine if water discharged from the Elephant Butte Reservoir upstream could be a primary source. In July 1996, as anoxia began to develop in the hypolimnion of the Elephant Butte Reservoir, surface water MMHg conce

A 50-year-old man with an acute type B aortic dissection underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair in 2019. The patient presented again with chest pain and left arm numbness. Computed tomography scan revealed aneurysm expansion and extensive thrombus within a floating stent graft. He underwent explantation of the stent graft, zone 2 total aortic arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk, and left axillary artery bypass. Simultaneously, he underwent retrograde thoracic endovascular aortic repair extension and controlled balloon septal rupture. Two years after surgery, he remains without c

Kommerell's diverticulum is a rare congenital anomaly, consisting in aneurysmal dilatation at the origin of an aberrant subclavian artery. Depending on concomitant anatomical characteristics, different endovascular and open surgical procedures have been proposed. The following report describes the first single-stage hybrid repair of a type I Kommerell's diverticulum associated with an aortic arch aneurysm and anomalous origin of the brachiocephalic vessels by total aortic arch replacement with a composite frozen elephant trunk prosthesis and endovascular treatment of the right subclavian arter

We report the case of a patient who developed an evolutive chronic aortic dissection after ascending aorta replacement for acute type A aortic dissection. Owing to the development of severe aortic regurgitation, aortic root pseudoaneurysm and aneurysmal dilatation of the arch and descending aorta, reoperation was adviced. Reoperation included Cabrol modification of the Bentall operation and aortic arch replacement with elephant trunk performed under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. The incidence of late aneurysmal formation in type 1 aortic dissection has been reported to be 30%. Close pos

A case report of Takayasu's arteritis with aneurysmal involvement of the ascending aorta, aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta is presented. The patient underwent successful two-stage operation by use of Elephant trunk technique. During the first operation, replacement of ascending aorta and aortic arch was done under selective cerebral perfusion. During the second-stage operation, replacement of the descending thoracic aorta was performed under partial cardiopulmonary bypass. The postoperative course was uneventful and one year after surgery the patient is doing well. Specific conditions

A 43-year-old female was hospitalized on October 25, 1993, due to severe back pain. She was diagnosed with annulo aortic ectasis, Stanford type-A acute aortic dissection and pectus excavatum caused by Marfan's syndrome. On November 30, 1993, single-stage surgery was performed, including modified Bentall procedure, aortic arch replacement, elephant trunk method and sternoplasty. Concerning the procedure for pectus excavatum, sternoplasty was selected because we thought that sternoplasty could endure the long procedure which would cause infection compared with sternal turnover. Postoperative cou

BACKGROUND Given its associations with high morbidity and mortality, type A aortic dissection requires urgent surgical intervention. Patients with Marfan syndrome present additional complexity due to underlying connective tissue abnormalities that warrant multiple thoracic aortic operations. The "arch-first" technique was developed to allow single-stage open extensive replacement of the thoracic aorta while maintaining continuous antegrade cerebral perfusion, thereby minimizing brain ischemia. In the current endovascular era, the frozen elephant trunk - a hybrid technique combining a conventio
