Separation of conjoined twins.

Preparing for surgical separation of conjoined twins involves coordination, communication, and multidisciplinary planning by several specialties. This article discusses the embryology, etiology, and incidence of conjoined twins and provides a historical perspective of the different types of conjoined twins. A case study describes the perioperative management of conjoined twins at Texas Children's Hospital's, Houston. Team members' roles are discussed, and the perioperative care of conjoined twins detailed.

Direct septum transversum incision to replace circumferential diaphragmatic incision in operations on the cardia.

Application of a simple anatomic approach to lesions of the cardia, both benign and malignant, in consecutive patients has demonstrated an excellent exposure with the same flexibility as the standard, circumferential, diaphragmatic, and abdominal incision used for the past 50 years. The technical details of the procedure and its application are described, along with the pertinent embryology, anatomy, and physiology that led to this approach.

[Pneumatization of the frontal sinus].

Through phylogeny and ontogeny, we follow the evolution of the frontal sinus; embryology gives details about the development of it. Then, we proceed to the investigation of factors influencing pneumatization. Afterwards, we analyse the different anomalies regarding pneumatization. In the last part, we mention experiments in progress being a link between cephalometry and the study of the frontal sinus surface in the diagnosis of skeletal Classes III.

Prevention of pre- and perinatal acquired hearing defects, Part I: Study of causes.

After recalling some notions of embryology, the authors review in the light of recent literature the main causes of prenatal acquired hypoacusias (of viral, bacterial, parasitic, endocrinologic, toxic or other origins) and of perinatal acquired hypoacusias (prematurity, neonatal hypoxia, obstetrical traumatism, nuclear icterus, toxicity and others) by following a systematic course (incidence, clinical signs in the mother and child, audiologic diagnosis, anatamopathology, physiopathology, prevention, and treatment).

Congenital Abnormalities of the Pericardium.

Congenital abnormalities of the pericardium are a rare group of disorders that include congenital absence of the pericardium, pericardial cysts, and diverticula. These congenital defects result from alterations in the embryologic formation and structure of the pericardium. Although many cases are incidentally found, they can present as symptomatic, life-threatening disease. Owing to their rarity, many cases are inappropriately diagnosed. Alterations in the embryologic formation and structure may result in the formation of these congenital abnormalities. We review the presentation, diagnosis, a

Anomalies of the middle and inner ear.

The development of the middle and inner ear highlights the intricacy of embryology. As early as 3 weeks after fertilization, the inner ear begins taking form. This process, along with development of the middle ear, continues throughout gestation. At birth, the middle ear, inner ear, and associated structures are almost adult size. An understanding of the embryologic development of the ear serves as a foundation for evaluating and managing congenital malformations of these structures. The focus of this article is the normal, abnormal, and arrested development of the middle and inner ear, with a…

A rare case of distal one-third of the transverse colon supplied by a branch from splenic artery.

We observed a rare variation of splenic artery during the routine dissection in the Laboratory of the Anatomy Department. It arose from the splenic artery toward the distal part of transverse colon which typically supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery. Embryologically distal part of the transverse colon is a segment of hindgut. In this case, splenic artery which an artery of foregut supplies an area of hindgut. The knowledge of splenic artery variations has significant importance during surgery of the organs of the upper abdominal region. In this study, we discussed clinical significance

Co-existent epidermoid and dermoid in a child with spinal dysraphism.

Both spinal epidermoids and dermoids, given their common embryological origin, are referred as a single entity under the category of spinal inclusion tumors. Many theories, although speculative, have been proposed in relevance to their development. We present a unique case of dual pathology consisting of both epidermoid and dermoid components in a child with spinal dysraphism and succinctly touch upon the related embryological aspects and plausible pathogenesis. To the best of our knowledge, such co-existent entity has not been observed in the pediatric spine. The report adds to the gamut of t

Accessory Auricles: Systematic Review of Definition, Associated Conditions, and Recommendations for Clinical Practice.

Accessory auricles are rare congenital abnormalities embryologically derived from the first branchial arch. Presentation may be variable with locations grouped into anatomical zones based on the frequency of location found in the literature. This study reviewed the papers between 1981 and 2017. Findings included an association with syndromes including Goldenhar, VACTERL, Treacher-Collins, Townes-Brocks, and Wolf-Hirschhorn. Based on histological and embryological evidence, the term "accessory auricle" is best used as an umbrella term to define this difference. Finally, indications are provided

Unique branching pattern of aortic arch in a patient with aortopulmonary window.

Aortic arch (AA) anomalies are usually associated with congenital heart disease. Variations such as aberrant subclavian artery have significance if shunt surgery is planned. Other variations may be clinically insignificant or present with respiratory or oesophageal symptoms. Demonstration and understanding of arch anomalies are crucial for managing as well as improving our understanding of their embryological basis. This presentation illustrates an unusual branching pattern of AA in a patient with an aortopulmonary window in which five arteries independently arose from the AA. CT imaging appea

MR imaging of neonatal spinal dysraphia: what to consider?

The development of the spinal canal and its contents is highly complex and involves multiple programmed anatomic and functional developmental and maturational processes. Correct and detailed knowledge about spinal malformations is essential to understand and recognize these lesions early (preferably prenatally) to counsel parents during pregnancy, to plan possible intrauterine treatments, and to make decisions about the mode of delivery and the immediate postnatal treatment. This article discusses the imaging findings of the most frequently encountered neonatal spinal malformations and correla

Meckel's Cave and Somatotopy of the Trigeminal Ganglion.

BACKGROUND: The anatomy and spatial relationships of the dural sac comprising the Meckel cave (MC) and its ensheathed trigeminal ganglion (TG) are exceedingly intricate and complex. There are conflicting accounts in the literature regarding the dural configuration of the MC around the ganglion and the dual embryology of the MC and TG is still unclear. METHODS: A combined systematic and narrative literature review was conducted to collate articles addressing MC and TG anatomy, in addition to their embryology, role in tumor spread, somatotopy, and association with trigeminal neuralgia. RESULTS…

Cervical meningomyelocele--an institutional experience.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical myelomeningoceles (CMMC) are a less common but distinct subgroup of myelomeningoceles. Their embryology and clinical characteristics vary from the more common thoracolumbar variant. Only a few small series have been published addressing this lesion in the literature with the largest one of them addressing nine patients. The authors present one of the largest series of cervical myelomeningoceles, review their embryology, clinical features, and their management strategies. METHODS: This study included all the children who were managed for cervical myelomeningocele between Ja…

Reconstruction of the aortic arches of a 28-day human embryo (stage 13) using the Born technique.

We present a reconstruction of the aortic arches of a human embryo at stage 13. Only a few original observations have been reported during the last 110 years and only two with three-dimensional reconstructions. The reconstruction technique originated in 1885. Modern computerized reconstruction techniques have no evident advantages and are more expensive. Aortic arch malformations are responsible for disorders which cannot be understood without a knowledge of their embryology. The embryonic aortic system is a typical example of Haeckel's law of recapitulation. A human embryo at stage 13 was pre…
