The Impostor Phenomenon Among Nursing Students and Nurses: A Scoping Review.

The impostor phenomenon (IP) refers to a false internal experience of low intelligence or ability that is associated with anxiety, depression, psychological distress, and burnout. The emotions associated with the IP affect not only personal mental health but also patient care. To address this issue, we need to completely understand the prevalence of and factors related to the IP and ways to resolve/overcome IP feelings. The aim of this scoping review was to identify the existing evidence regarding the IP among nursing students and nurses and determine gaps that can be addressed in future resea

Efficacy of a New Non-drug Acne Therapy: Aloe Vera Gel Combined With Ultrasound and Soft Mask for the Treatment of Mild to Severe Facial Acne.

Background: Acne is a chronic disorder that affects almost 80% of adolescents and young adults, causing psychological and emotional distress. However, the current treatments for acne are either ineffective or have many side effects. This study was designed to confirm and objectively quantify the effect of a new non-drug combined therapy on acne. Methods: This study innovatively utilized ultrasound, which enhanced the absorption of aloe vera gel, and soft mask to make a purely physical method without any drugs. In both the treatment group and control group, the number of papules/pustules and th

Region Based Parallel Hierarchy Convolutional Neural Network for Automatic Facial Nerve Paralysis Evaluation.

In this article, we propose a parallel hierarchy convolutional neural network (PHCNN) combining a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network structure to quantitatively assess the grading of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) by considering the region-based asymmetric facial features and temporal variation of the image sequences. FNP, such as Bell's palsy, is the most common facial symptom of neuromotor dysfunctions. It causes the weakness of facial muscles for the normal emotional expression and movements. The subjective judgement by clinicians completely depends on individual experience, which may not

The Effect of Cleft Orthognathic and Nasal Reconstruction on Perceived Social Traits.

BACKGROUND: The investigators hypothesized that a layperson's social perceptions of an adolescent cleft lip and palate (CL/P) patient are more favorable after orthognathic surgery and definitive nasal reconstruction. METHODS: The investigators implemented a survey comparing layperson's perception of specific social traits before and >6 months after jaw and nasal reconstruction in CL/P adolescent subjects by viewing standardized facial photographs. The sample was composed of 10 consecutive subjects treated by 1 surgeon from birth through completion of their staged reconstruction. The outcome v

[The Influence of Media Consumption During Early Childhood on Media Use and Psychological Disorders in Adolescence].

The Influence of Media Consumption During Early Childhood on Media Use and Psychological Disorders in Adolescence There are many studies that suggest that there is a link between high media consumption and psychological, physiological and social disorders. Nevertheless, there are also inconsistent results, methodical limitations and a lack of longitudinal studies. The present study analyses habits of media consumption in children and adolescents, the influence of different early childhood risk factors on the use of the media in adolescence and the links between early childhood media consumptio

Impairment of motor dexterity in schizophrenia assessed by a novel finger movement test.

Schizophrenia is characterized by a series of serious mental disturbances, including social, cognitive, and emotional dysfunctions. Although motor dysfunctions as well as the cognitive impairments in schizophrenia have been noted since the era of Kraepelin, little attention has been paid to motor dysfunctions until recently. Here, we examined the characteristics of motor dysfunctions and their relationship to other cognitive functions in schizophrenia. Subjects were 27 patients who met the DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia and 49 healthy volunteers. A series of motor tests, i.e., pegboard, mir

Social cognition in Intermittent Explosive Disorder and aggression.

Social-emotional information processing (SEIP) was assessed in individuals with current DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED: n = 100) and in healthy (n = 100) and psychiatric (n = 100) controls using a recently developed and validated self-rated questionnaire. SEIP vignettes depicted both direct aggressive and relationally aggressive scenarios of a socially ambiguous nature and were followed by questions assessing subjects' reactions and judgments about the vignettes. IED subjects differed from both healthy and psychiatric controls in all SEIP components. While hostile attribution was h

Functional mapping of dynamic happy and fearful facial expressions in young adults with familial risk for psychosis - Oulu Brain and Mind Study.

BACKGROUND: Social interaction requires mirroring to other people's mental state. Psychotic disorders have been connected to social interaction and emotion recognition impairment. We compared the brain activity between young adults with familial risk for psychosis (FR) and matched controls during visual exposure to emotional facial expression. We also investigated the role of the amygdala, the key region for social interaction and emotion recognition. METHODS: 51 FR and 52 control subjects were drawn from the Northern Finland 1986 Birth Cohort (Oulu Brain and Mind Study). None of the included

Facial emotion recognition in Scottish prisoners.

BACKGROUND: Studies of antisocial populations have found that they show deficits in recognition of facial affect. Such deficits are also found in other populations with clinical conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder. AIMS: We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that facial affect recognition in the Scottish prison population would differ from matched controls. In addition, we aimed to investigate any relationship between facial affect recognition deficits and offence history. METHODS: A sample of serving convicted prisoners, drawn from

Decoding Alexander the Great's gastrointestinal cause of death using artificial wisdom: An artificial intelligence-human inquiry into a medical mystery.

BACKGROUND: ChatGPT was developed in November 2022 with studies showing its impressive performance in academic examinations, serving as a promising tool to answer questions even on controversial topics. Artificial intelligence (AI) achieving surface-level performance does not necessarily equate to a deep understanding of human cognition. The development of artificial wisdom, therefore, necessitates a shift from simply mimicking intelligent behavior to modeling the underlying mechanisms of human wisdom, including emotional understanding, ethical considerations, and contextual awareness. Several

Progress in pain mechanisms and management.

Pain is a multifaceted sensory and emotional experience that profoundly affects human health and quality of life. It functions as a double-edged sword: while acute pain serves as a protective warning signal, chronic pain compromises physiological and psychological well-being. Pain is now widely regarded as the "fifth vital sign," and given its rising prevalence and substantial global burden, chronic pain may also be considered a major chronic disease entity. Accordingly, elucidating the neural and molecular underpinnings of pain and developing effective analgesic strategies remain urgent prior

Trust the machine or the human? A dynamic neuro-cognitive model of AIGC credibility assessment.

With the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) in digital education, understanding how students assess the credibility of AI-generated content has become particularly crucial. To investigate college students' credibility assessments of AIGC, the present study draws on predictive coding theory and dual-process theory to construct and provide initial empirical support for a "Dynamic Neuro-Cognitive Model of AIGC Credibility Assessment". This study employed a 2 (information source: AI vs. human) × 2 (content type: opinion-based vs. factual) within-subjects design. By in
