In an effort to objectify neuropsychologic evaluations, consideration of a patient's emotional behavior has often been neglected. An extensive literature review is undertaken in an effort to document lateralized emotional behaviors commonly found in brain injury populations. This evidence is contrasted with the psychiatric symptoms and lateralized neuropsychologic impairments seen in major depression and schizophrenia. Tulving described an effect of retrograde amnesia in a free-recall task of word lists, produced by inserting items having priority in recall. Other authors confirmed the amnesic effect without giving instructions for priority both in recall and in recognition tasks. A chart review and telephone interview of 72 sexual abuse victims was conducted to determine if children and adolescents who are victims of sexual abuse suffer from symptoms similar to the "rape trauma syndrome," which has been reported in adults. We evaluated the concurrent validity of the revised Bender-Gestalt emotional indicators (Koppitz, 1975) among three groups of children in the 7- to 10-year age range: adjustment disorder, behavior disorder, and normal control. Utilizing the standardized Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), emotional health scores of those experiencing psychosocial transitions were compared. Parents whose child died approximately 60 months earlier (N = 62) were compared to new immigrants living in absorption centers who arrived approximately 8 months earlier (N = 122).
