INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pseudopelade of Brocq originally describes asymptomatic, irregularly shaped patches of atrophic hair loss. It designates a rare, idiopathic, slow progressive cicatricial alopecia without evident signs of folliculitis or inflammatory changes. This dermatological disorder still needs further research into its pathogenesis and treatment. We hope this case report provides valuable insight and a significant addition to the research gap as it is common in females but rare in male patients, and serves as a starting point for additional inquiry regarding causal link and ep

Patient registries are instrumental for clinical research in rare diseases. They help to achieve a sufficient sample size for epidemiological and clinical research and to assess the feasibility of clinical trials. The European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) registry currently comprises information on more than 25,000 patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI). The prerequisite of a patient to be included into the ESID registry is an IEI either defined by a defect in a gene included in the disease classification of the international union of immunological societies, or verified by app

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an emerging disease that adversely impacts outcomes of older adults across the spectrum of fragility fractures. Few studies have examined sarcopenia in upstream fragility fractures such as the distal radius. Understanding the state of current evidence is essential in defining a research agenda in this critical area of sentinel distal radius fractures and sarcopenia.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this scoping review was to summarize existing literature on sarcopenia in distal radius fracture in older adults, and to identify research areas and gaps to guide future studies.

The evaluation of usual food intake is of central importance in nutritional epidemiology studies. Some authors propose the usual dietary recall (UDR) as a viable method for assessing usual food intake; however, its characteristics remain poorly understood. The objective of this study is to review the literature on the application and performance characteristics of the UDR as a dietary assessment method. Electronic search strategies were conducted using the Excerpta Medica Database, Publisher Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences L

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs) are chronic inflammatory diseases driven by eosinophil-predominant pathologic infiltration in the gastrointestinal tract. The nomenclature system divides EGIDs into eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and non-EoE EGIDs based on whether the inflammation is restricted to the esophagus or involves other gastrointestinal segments. EGIDs are rapidly becoming a focus in gastroenterology due to a continuous increase in incidence and prevalence rates during the past 30 years and no plateau observed to date, particularly for EoE. The evolving epidemiology of EG

Camels are increasingly becoming the livestock of choice for pastoralists reeling from effects of climate change in semi-arid and arid parts of Kenya. As the population of camels rises, better understanding of their role in the epidemiology of zoonotic diseases in Kenya is a public health priority. Rift Valley fever (RVF), brucellosis and Q fever are three of the top priority diseases in the country but the involvement of camels in the transmission dynamics of these diseases is poorly understood. We analyzed 120 camel serum samples from northern Kenya to establish seropositivity rates of the t

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: The recent introduction of sensitive markers of myocardial injury is likely to affect the epidemiology of coronary heart disease (CHD). The American Heart Association together with other societies and research agencies have recently published a new definition on acute CHD to improve consistency in epidemiological and clinical studies (referred here as the '2003 definition').
METHODS: In this study we compare the data on CHD events in the Finnish National Hospital Discharge Register (HDR) and the Causes of Death Register (CDR) with the population-based myocardial infarct

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Genital ulcer disease (GUD) has been reported to increase the risk for the acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although many investigators have reported an increased risk for HIV infection in persons with concurrent or previous GUD, not all studies have been designed to determine whether GUD causes an increased risk for HIV infection or acts only as a risk marker for infection. The evidence from the literature is discussed, and the criteria for causal inference proposed by Sir Austin Bradford Hill are applied.
GOAL: To evaluate the strength of the ass

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological information gathered through birth defects surveillance is an important adjunct to carrying out clinical and aetiological research. Information on the incidence in the population, causative risk factors and providing baseline data prior to intervention are all important elements. Under the auspices of the World Health Organisation, it was agreed that a global registry and database on craniofacial anomalies should be created and this, the International Database on Craniofacial Anomalies (ICDFA) was designed to gather information on craniofacial abnormalities from e

INTRODUCTION: In the face of the challenges posed by pandemics like COVID-19, the need for accurate mathematical models and methods to predict the impact of outbreaks on public health in real-time is paramount. This research aims to develop a robust, adaptable, and general framework for investigating the dynamics of any transmissible disease. The primary objective of this work is to achieve robust parameter optimization for a general modeling framework, a capability crucial for effectively applying it to reconstruct and predict epidemiological curves for any transmissible disease.
