Bacterial contamination of surgical instruments in 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy: Incidence and risk factors.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of surgical instrument contamination associated with microincision vitrectomy surgery. METHODS: Ninety-six eyes from 86 immunocompetent patients who underwent 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy from December 2023 to February 2024 in our institution were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Surgical instrument contamination was detected in 7 cases (7.3%). Bacterial species were isolated from the trocar, endoilluminator, and beveled probe. Postoperative endophthalmitis did not occur during the 2-month follow-up period. Use of preoperative antibacterial eye drops wa

[Child with inflammatory tinea capitis after visiting a barbershop].

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy presenting with inflammatory tinea capitis (kerion celsi) after repeated visits to a barbershop. Trichophyton tonsurans was identified by fungal culture, while Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus spp. were detected as accompanying microorganisms. The infection was considered highly likely to be barbershop-associated, most probably resulting from inadequately reprocessed hair-cutting or shaving instruments. An initial misdiagnosis as dermatitis, followed by treatment with topical hydrocortisone, was associated with further clinical progression. This case

Detection of Paraburkholderia in Clinical Specimens Associated with Use of Nonsterile Ultrasound Gel for Percutaneous Procedures - United States, Canada, and Israel, May 2023⎯April 2025.

Contaminated nonsterile ultrasound gels have been implicated in outbreaks of Burkholderia infections associated with improper infection control practices before or during percutaneous procedures. In August 2024, the Minnesota Department of Health Public Health Laboratory noticed an increase in Paraburkholderia fungorum or Paraburkholderia species identified from referred clinical isolates. All isolates were recovered from blood cultures, and whole genome sequencing (WGS) confirmed that the isolates were genetically related. Because P. fungorum is not an established human pathogen and has rarel

Parasitological and microbiological assessment of contact lens storage cases: a survey of asymptomatic lens student wearers from five medical specialties in Tunisia, North Africa.

BACKGROUND: Contamination of contact lenses has always been correlated with contamination of lenses and lens storage cases (LSCs), with higher loads of microorganisms in LSCs. The aim of the present study is to better understand non-compliance with strict hygiene rules in asymptomatic contact lens wearers, and to track circulating germs in LSCs that may affect the integrity of the eye. METHODS: Demographic and behavioral data were collected from 111 asymptomatic lens wearers belonging to different medical faculties in Tunisia. Seventy LSCs were subjected to microbiological investigations, by

Chemical Disinfection of an Accidentally Contaminated and Irreplaceable Inorganic Element During Orthopaedic Surgery Is a Safe Option.

BACKGROUND: During surgical procedures, the accidental contamination of a critical instrument or implant can jeopardize the entire operation. Resterilizing the item is not always feasible and can be time-consuming. Since extending the duration of the surgery heightens the risk of postoperative complications, it is essential to balance this risk with the risk of infection from contamination. Currently, there is no simple, safe, and quickly available method to address this issue. This study explored the efficacy of using chemical disinfection to deal with this problem. METHODS: In part 1 of the

Bacterial air contamination and the protective effect of coverage for sterile surgical goods: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge regarding how long prepared sterile goods can wait before becoming contaminated. We investigated whether surgical goods could be prepared the day before surgery and kept sterile overnight in the operating room, if protected by sterile covers. METHODS: Sterile surgical goods for open-heart surgeries (n=70) were randomized to preparation on the morning of the operation or on the previous evening. Exposure time was the total time between preparation and use. Primary outcome was bacterial growth reported as colony forming units (cfu), isolated on 840 agar pl

An antimicrobial impregnated urinary catheter that reduces mineral encrustation and prevents colonisation by multi-drug resistant organisms for up to 12 weeks.

Two major complications of indwelling urinary catheterisation include infection and mineral encrustation of the catheter. Our antimicrobial urinary catheter (AUC) impregnated with rifampicin, triclosan, and sparfloxacin has demonstrated long-term protective activity against major uropathogens. This study aimed to firstly assess the ability of the AUC to resist mineral encrustation in the presence and absence of bacteria. Secondly, it aimed to investigate the AUC's anti-biofilm activity against multi-drug resistant organisms. There was no difference in surface roughness between AUC and control

Targeting cyst wall is an effective strategy in improving the efficacy of marketed contact lens disinfecting solutions against Acanthamoeba castellanii cysts.

Acanthamoeba cysts are highly resistant to contact lens disinfecting solutions. Acanthamoeba cyst wall is partially made of 1,4 β-glucan (i.e., cellulose) and other complex polysaccharides making it a hardy shell that protects the resident amoeba. Here, we hypothesize that targeting the cyst wall structure in addition to antiamoebic compound would improve the efficacy of marketed contact lens disinfecting solutions. Using chlorhexidine as an antiamoebic compound and cellulase enzyme to disrupt cyst wall structure, the findings revealed that combination of both agents abolished viability of Aca

Risk factors for contamination of catheterized urine specimens in febrile children.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections are the most common serious bacterial infection in febrile infants. Bladder catheterization is the preferred method of obtaining urine for culture in young children. Contamination of urine can be recognized when nonpathogens or multiple pathogens are isolated; preliminary culture results may lead to unnecessary antibiotics pending final identification. Some low-colony count (<50,000 colony-forming units per milliliter) cultures may represent contamination or asymptomatic bacteriuria. OBJECTIVE: Identify clinical factors that lead to contamination of cathet

Reduction in intraoperative bacterial contamination of peripheral intravenous tubing through the use of a novel device.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is a vital intervention to reduce health-care associated infections, but compliance remains low. The authors hypothesized that improvements in intraoperative hand hygiene compliance would reduce transmission of bacteria to surgical patients and reduce the incidence of postsurgical healthcare-associated infections. METHODS: The authors performed a controlled before-and-after study over 2 consecutive months. One hundred fourteen operative cases were enrolled. Two predesignated sites on the anesthesia machine were selected, decontaminated, and cultured via aseptic techni

[Asymptomatic fungemia caused by Acremonium sp associated with colonization of a central venous catheter].

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms considered saprophytes have emerged as invasive or indolent pathogens among immuno-compromised patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We detected an initial case of catheter-related Acremonium sp fungemia on a previously asymptomatic patient. We diagnosed a second case five weeks later. Both patients had a non-tunneled central venous catheter (CVC) that had been cared for following routine protocol by nurses in the Intravenous Therapy Team on a weekly basis. The sole risk factor that both patients shared was that they had received total parenteral nutrition (TPN) by a CVC
