BACKGROUND: Erythema multiforme (EM) is a mucocutaneous disease most often associated with preceding herpes simplex virus or Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. It is characterized by targetoid lesions occurring on the limbs and head and neck. Mucosal involvement can be extensive.
OBJECTIVE: We report a case of lip adhesion as a complication of EM in a child who required corrective surgery and review similar oral commissure complications.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a common skin disease, which affects approximately 20% of the population. This reaction may present with several clinical manifestations. Erythema multiforme-like allergic contact dermatitis is a rare type of non-eczematous contact dermatitis, which may lead to difficulty in diagnosis.Essential oil of Laurus nobilis is widely used in massage therapy for antiinflammatory and analgesic effects. Laurus nobilis induced contact dermatitis has been reported in the literature but an erythema multiforme-like presentation is rare.

We report a case of a 34-year-old woman presenting with an erythema multiforme (EM)-like eruption. Lesions developed after a 12-day treatment with a slimming drug preparation (food integrator with thermogenic activity) and a herbal remedy (pilosella tincture). Although they were once believed to be distinct diseases, many observers currently consider erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis to represent a mild-to-severe continuum of the same process. Each shares certain clinical, histologic, and etiologic characteristics; among the latter two are frequent ocular involvement. Because long-term ophthalmic sequelae may be catastrophic, early recognition and therapy of this acute oculocutaneous disease spectrum are critically important.

We report 3 cases of erythema multiforme following topical application of diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP) for the treatment of alopecia areata. This eruption represents a rare side effect which could be controlled with corticosteroids given both systemically and topically. When this unusual reaction occurred, treatment with DCP was stopped. In one of the patients, subsequent topical immunotherapy with squaric acid dibutylester was not complicated by this side effect and resulted in complete hair regrowth.

62 patients suffering from recurrent herpes simplex, with ten out of them showing postherpetic erythema multiforme, have been investigated with special reference to histocompatibility standardisation. In comparison with a control group (n = 170), our patients revealed a high and statistically significant level of HLA-B5 (p less than 0,01). Postherpetic erythema multiforme seems to be associated with HLA-A9.
