Nurse-based educational interventions in patients with peritoneal dialysis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a major renal replacement therapy modality for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) worldwide. As poor self-care of PD patients could lead to serious complications, including peritonitis, exit-site infection, technique failure, and death; several nurse-based educational interventions have been introduced. However, these interventions varied and have been supported by small-scale studies so the effectiveness of nurse-based educational interventions on clinical outcomes of PD patients has been inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectivene

Patients' and nurses' experiences of fundamental nursing care: A systematic review and qualitative synthesis.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To systematically identify, appraise and synthesise patients', residents' and nurses' experiences of fundamental nursing care for nutrition, elimination, mobility and hygiene. BACKGROUND: The evidence base for effective nursing behaviours to assist people with their fundamental care needs is sparse, hampering the development of effective interventions. Synthesising data on patients' and nurses' experiences of fundamentals of nursing care could contribute to the development of such an intervention. METHODS: Systematic review and synthesis of qualitative data from qualitat

A Delphi Study to Develop a Core Outcome Set for Capturing and Measuring Nurse Well-Being.

BACKGROUND: Poor nurse well-being is a significant concern, adversely affecting patient care quality and satisfaction and contributing to poor job satisfaction, increased sickness absence and workforce retention issues. There are calls for evidence-based policies and interventions to address poor nurse well-being, but no consensus exists on which outcomes should be captured to assess nurse well-being. We used a salutogenic and consensus approach to develop a Core Outcome Set (COS) for nurse well-being. METHODS: A Delphi methodology was employed. Participants were recruited from two stakeholde

Opioid induced constipation management in orthopaedic and trauma patients: treatment and the potential of nurse-initiated management.

BACKGROUND: Opioid analgesics treat moderate to severe pain with proven analgesic efficacy, although their use is associated with dose-limiting side effects, such as constipation. Orthopaedic and trauma patients are at high risk of developing opioid-induced constipation (OIC) due to reduced mobility and increased opioid requirements to manage prolonged pain after injury. OBJECTIVES: To examine the evidence base to guide clinicians on the most effective or tolerated laxative regimen for the management of OIC and nurse-initiated management of OIC. METHOD: A review of the literature was underta

Psychoeducational Burnout Intervention for Nurses: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses face high levels of stress and emotional exhaustion due to heavy workloads and demanding work environments. Prolonged exposure to these stressors predisposes nurses to burnout, which can adversely affect patient care. Addressing burnout among nurses requires a multifaceted approach, involving both personal and organizational strategies. While organizational strategies target systemic workplace issues, personal interventions are often favored for their ease of implementation, immediate benefits, and empowerment of health care workers through stress management and resilience-b

Training health care providers in the treatment of tobacco use and dependence: pre- and post-training results.

RATIONALE: Health care providers have an extended reach into the population of tobacco users. Increasing the number and variety of health care providers that deliver the evidence-based, brief interventions for tobacco use prescribed by the Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline is likely to result in more tobacco users exposed to evidence-based treatments and more successful quit attempts. Effective training is key to increasing provider performance and proficiency in this regard. METHOD: A 1-hour didactic training was delivered to 1286 health care providers (185 physicians, 359 nu

Breastfeeding the late preterm infant.

Late preterm infants comprise the fastest growing segment of babies born prematurely. They arrive with disadvantages relative to feeding skills, stamina, and risk for conditions such as hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and slow weight gain. Breastfeeding these babies can be difficult and frustrating. Individualized feeding plans include special considerations to compensate for immature feeding skills and inadequate breast stimulation. Breastfeeding management guidelines are described that operate within the late preterm infant's special vulnerabilities.

Managing acute cough in children: evidence-based guidelines.

This article examines the evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of acute cough in children. Cough is a common symptom in children and a frequent reason for consultation in primary care. Generally, an acute cough is a self-limiting condition resulting from expected childhood viral illnesses. However, a child should be thoroughly evaluated to rule out a serious underlying condition or disease responsible for the cough. Parents are often concerned and anxious about their child's cough. The use of over-the-counter cough and cold medications is widespread and parents commonly reques

Enema prior to labor: a controversial routine in Taiwan.

While taking an enema to induce labor is a controversial issue worldwide, in Taiwan it remains a routine procedure in many hospitals in preparation for birth. Episiotomy is also a prevalent procedure performed during the birthing process. Some physicians believe that enemas help reduce the risk of feces contamination of the episiotomy incision and, therefore, are justified as a routine procedure. This study compared the neonatal infection rates, times to appearance of fetal head, times to first post-labor bowel movement, and rates of episiotomy dehiscence of women receiving a pre-labor enema a

Clinical Nurses as Second Victims After Patient Safety Incidents: A Meta-Synthesis of Experiences, Coping and Support Needs.

BACKGROUND: In patient safety incidents (PSIs), nurses often act as 'second victims', experiencing multifaceted distress, including psychological, physiological and professional burdens. In recent years, qualitative studies on nurses as second victims have increased; however, the evidence remains fragmented. Existing qualitative meta-syntheses have limitations in terms of contextual diversity, coverage of incident types and exploration of support needs. AIM: To synthesise qualitative evidence on nurses as second victims after PSIs and provide implications for developing a multilevel support s
