[Hemispheric asymmetry of visual evoked potentials during human recognition of facial emotional expressions].

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) in standard 16 EEG derivations were recorded in 26 young men and 20 women during recognition of facial emotional expressions and geometric figures. The stimuli were presented on a computer screen in the center of the visual field or randomly in the right or left vision hemifields. Peak VEP latency and mean amplitude in 50-ms epochs were measured; spatiotemporal VEP dynamics was analyzed in a series of topographic maps. The right hemisphere was shown to be more important in processing emotional faces. The character of the asymmetry was dynamic: at earlier stages o…

Sensory evoked potentials in SIV-infected monkeys with rapidly and slowly progressing disease.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infects the central nervous system (CNS) early in the course of disease progression and leads to some form of neurological disease in 40-60% of cases. Both symptomatic and asymptomatic HIV-infected subjects also show abnormalities in evoked potentials. As part of an effort to further validate an animal model of the neurological disease associated with lentiviral infection, we recorded multimodal sensory evoked potentials (EPs) from nine rhesus macaques infected with passaged strains of SIVmac (R71/E17), prior to and at 1 month intervals following inoculatio…

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in patients with dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal.

Recently Minor and co-workers described patients with sound- and pressure-induced vertigo due to dehiscence of bone overlying the superior semicircular canal. Identifying patients with this "new" vestibular entity is important, not only because the symptoms can be very incapacitating, but also because they are surgically treatable. We present symptoms and findings for three such patients. On exposure to sounds, especially in the frequency range 0.5-1 kHz, they showed vertical/torsional eye movements analogous to a stimulation of the superior semicircular canal. They also showed abnormally larg

Calcium transients evoked by action potentials in the somata of chick ciliary neurons.

The effect of action potentials on the calcium concentration in the somata of chick ciliary neurons ([Ca2+]s) was determined by loading these with the calcium indicator calcium green-1. Following trains of 1-10 impulses (30 Hz) to the postganglionic nerve, the [Ca2+]s increased rapidly and then declined along a single exponential with a time constant of 0.70 +/- 0.04 s (fast phase). After trains of 20 or 50 impulses, the elevated [Ca2+]s declined as the sum of two exponentials, with time constants of 0.78 +/- 0.12 s (fast phase) and 4.0 +/- 0.4 s (moderate phase). After a 600-impulse postgangl

Somatosensory and motor evoked potentials in patients with tumours in the spinal canal.

Motor and sensory evoked potentials were recorded in 27 patients with expanding spinal tumour. The patients were divided into 2 groups: I. tumours at the level of the spinal cord and II. at the level of the cauda equina. On the basis of the localization of the tumour, midline and lateral subgroups were distinguished. The latencies of motor evoked potentials were prolonged in most of the patients, even those without paresis, in both groups. The motor evoked potentials detected subclinical motor lesions in 7 patients. All patients but one manifested sensory deficits, which could not be shown wit…

Effects of sex, height and age on motor evoked potentials with magnetic stimulation.

Magnetic stimulation of the brain and cervical and lumbar spinal roots was performed on 48 healthy subjects in order to investigate the effects of sex, height and age on motor evoked potentials (MEPs). The compound muscle action potentials were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis and abductor hallucis muscles. The central motor conduction time (CMCT) was measured between the cerebral cortex and the cervical root and also between the cerebral cortex and the lumbar root. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine which of the physical variables, namely sex, height and age, were …

Asymmetric changes in somatosensory evoked potentials correlate with limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration.

To clarify the underlying mechanism of limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration (CBD), we investigated somatosensory evoked potentials in 5 patients with CBD, as compared with 12 age-matched control subjects. All patients presented with asymmetric limb apraxia, particularly of limb-kinetic type. N20 latencies were significantly prolonged following median nerve stimulation on the more apraxic side, but not on the less apraxic side. These results suggest that limb apraxia in CBD may, at least in part, be due to a disorder of somatosensory information processing involving the parietal cortex.

Motor evoked potentials in the preoperative and postoperative assessment of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Motor evoked potentials and central motor conduction time (CMCT) were examined from both upper and lower limbs in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus to find a predictor for the success of shunting procedures. The hypotheses that walking disturbances are due to pyramidal tract compression as well as the possibility that the upper limbs are affected subclinically in these patients were also studied. The study suggests that the walking disturbances are not the result of a major pyramidal tract dysfunction but probably involve the sensorimotor integration leading to normal gait. Furthermo…

Visual evoked potentials in the vicinity of the optic tract during stereotactic pallidotomy.

We recorded visual evoked responses in eight patients with Parkinson's disease, using a depth electrode either at or below the stereotactic target in the ventral part of the globus pallidus internus (GPi), which is located immediately dorsal to the optic tract. Simultaneously, scalp visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were also recorded from a mid-occipital electrode with a mid-frontal reference electrode. A black-and-white checkerboard pattern was phase reversed at 1 Hz; check size was 50 min of arc . Pallidal VEPs to full field stimulation showed an initial positive deflection, with a latency of…

[Somatosensory evoked potentials in rheumatoid polyarthritis with radiologic involvement of the cervical spine].

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) have been recorded in 11 patients with cervical spine involvement, with or without signs of myelopathy due to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In three patients, SEP have been recorded both before and after cervical spine surgery. In seven cases, the P14 (particularly the P9/P14 amplitude ratio) or P30 potentials were abnormal, whereas other potentials and conduction times were less often modified. Vertebral luxation sites that were predominantly observed at the upper cervical level account for these findings, thus supporting the diagnostic utility of P14 and P3…

Maturation of human visual evoked potentials: 27 weeks conceptional age to 2 years.

Visual evoked potentials to pattern reversal and diffuse flash stimulation were recorded from 520 consecutive pediatric patients and 11 normal infants between the ages of 27 weeks post-conception and 24 months. The latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of the first reproducible positive peak of the binocular pattern visual evoked potential (P100) were measured for five check sizes subtending from 15' to 4 degrees of arc. Three developmental trends were noted: 1) a rapid increase in pattern resolution near term, 2) a subsequent decrease in the latency of P100, and 3) a gradual increase in the ampl…

Continuous monitoring of short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials during cardiac and aortic surgery.

The effectiveness of monitoring somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) intraoperatively to detect brain damage early remains controversial. To assess the diagnostic accuracy of this modality, a study was conducted between 1991 and 1994, recording SEPs in 287 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac and aortic surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with moderate hypothermia or deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. From P1 to N2 of the SEPs occurring within 50 ms latency in response to electrical stimulation of the median nerve were recorded over the contralateral postcentral cortex at 5-min i…

The role of somatosensory evoked potentials in the evaluation of spinal cord retethering.

Early detection of clinically significant spinal cord retethering is of paramount importance for the preservation of neurologic function in patients with repaired spinal dysraphic lesions. We retrospectively analyzed 90 children who were followed with serial peroneal somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) after a repair of their spinal dysraphic lesions with the objective of evaluating whether SEPs were a useful way of monitoring these children to facilitate early detection of clinically significant retethering. Three hundred and nine studies were performed on these children yielding a mean of…

[Voluntary changes of visual evoked potentials in cases with hysteria and/or simulation].

We report a 25-year-old woman with gradual loss of visual acuteness, during puerperium and blindness in fifteen days. Two months latter she remain steady. Visual evoked potentials using monocular checkerboard pattern-reversal, were abnormal. Clinical suspicion of voluntary alteration of VEP was considered. A second VEP exploration with binocular stimulation and maneuvers of distraction were carried out. Normal VEP were recorded. Deliberate alteration of the visual evoked potential should be considered in patients suspicious of hysteria or malingering.

Magnetic resonance imaging and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in neuro-Behçet's disease.

We studied central nervous system lesions in patients with neuro-Behcet's disease using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and recording of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). MRI revealed abnormal findings in seven of eight patients. MRI studies demonstrated extensive regions with high intensity signal in the brain stem and/or basal ganglia on T2-weighted images obtained during the acute stage of the disease in three patients. One of these patients had a strongly gadolinum-enhanced round lesion in the lower pons. In four of the other five patients with chronic disease, b…

Motor evoked potentials of the human diaphragm elicited through magnetic transcranial brain stimulation.

Magnetic transcranial brain stimulation has been used for several years now to study the function and integrity of the corticospinal tracts. In this study magnetic transcranial motor cortex stimulation of the diaphragm was carried out in order to describe the characteristics of the recorded motor evoked potentials (MEPs) of this muscle in humans. The motor cortex was stimulated transcranially in 10 healthy subjects, followed by stimulation of the cervical roots so that central motor conduction time (CMCT) could be calculated. Diaphragm MEPs were recorded at deep inspriration. Normal values wer…

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and blink reflexes in patients with pontocerebellar angle tumors.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and blink reflexes (BR) were obtained from 13 patients with pontocerebellar angle (PCA) tumors whose pathological diagnosis was as follows: 7 acoustic neurinoma, 3 meningioma, 1 neurinoma, 1 brain stem epidermoid tumor, 1 arteriovenous malformation. The most prominent abnormality was noted in BAEP generated by stimulating the ear ipsilateral to the lesion and ipsilateral R1 reflexes obtained from ipsilateral stimulation of the supraorbital nerve.

[Level of anxiety and effects of moderate noise on early auditory evoked potentials].

Thirty men and 30 women, 20-25 years old, and selected for presence or absence of anxiety were exposed successively for 15 min to four different noises at the same continuous equivalent level LAeq = 75 dB. Auditory brainstem evoked potentials were recorded before and after exposure to each noise. No difference was found between these noises as to their effects upon evoked potentials. After exposure to noise a significant lengthening of L1, L3 and L5 latencies was observed in men; in women a significant lengthening of L3 and L5 latencies was also present. At the same time, I-V and III-V interva…

Motor and somatosensory evoked potentials in mice infected with Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus.

We used an in vivo technique to record spinal motor and somatosensory evoked potentials in SJL/J and B10 mice chronically (4-10 months) infected with Daniel's strain of Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV). SJL/J mice demonstrated primary spinal cord demyelination with chronic TMEV infection, whereas B10 mice were resistant to TMEV induced demyelination. Analysis based on the velocity of the initial peak of evoked responses demonstrated significantly slower conduction velocities in infected SJL/J mice as compared to age-matched uninfected SJL/J controls (p < 0.01) and infected B10 m…
