CASE REPORT: We report a case of keratitis in a female contact lens wearer, who developed a deep corneal abscess. The culture of a corneal biopsy scraping was positive for multiresistant Fusarium solani. The patient has a complicated clinical course and failed to respond to local and systemic antifungal treatment, requiring eye enucleation.
CONCLUSION: Fusarium keratitis may progress to severe endophthalmitis. Clinical suspicion is paramount in order to start antifungal therapy without delay. Therapy is complex due to the high resistance of this organism to usual antifungal drugs.

We report a case of superficial granulomatous pyoderma (SGP) treated successfully with infliximab. A 71-year-old woman developed erythema, erosions and cribriform scarring in the right periorbital area following enucleation of the right eye. PURPOSE: To examine whether the scleral cross sectional area and estimated scleral volume are associated with a longer axial length in human eyes.
METHODS: Histologic anterior-posterior sections running through the pupil and the optic nerve head were examined. Using a light microscope, we measured the thickness of the sclera at the limbus, ora serrata, equator, midpoint between equator and posterior pole (MPEPP), peripapillary region and posterior pole. Calcification detected by CT is a valuable technique to confirm a clinical impression of retinoblastoma. However, when calcification is detected following enucleation with placement of a scleral-wrapped orbital implant, the presence of calcium may be dystrophic, instead of indicating recurrent tumor growth. Cautious follow-up is warranted, and this report suggests that such calcification, probably associated with the scleral wrapping, can remain stable over many years.

PURPOSE: To report two cases of bilateral retinoblastoma (RB) with unusual presentations.
METHODS: The medical records of 321 patients from the Retinoblastoma Referral Center in Siena were reviewed. A total of 111 patients had bilateral RB, 2 of them presenting with phthisis bulbi and buphthalmos. Both patients underwent bilateral enucleation. PURPOSE: To evaluate a keratoprosthesis, implanted by penetrating keratoplasty, in rabbits.
METHODS: We implanted our keratoprosthesis (optics and flange portions of polymethylmethacrylate and a polyurethane skirt with micropores) into 14 eyes of 14 rabbits. PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of punctal occlusion and artificial tears combined with lid hygiene in the treatment of dry anophthalmic socket syndrome (DASS).
METHODS: A prospective, randomized, parallel group-controlled trial enrolled 40 patients with DASS. Patients were randomized to receive punctal occlusion (group A) or artificial tears and eyelid wipes (group B). PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the practices employed by oculoplastic surgeons in the assessment and management of anophthalmic sockets and external ocular prostheses.
METHODS: Oculoplastic surgeons from two countries, who specialized in the management of anophthalmic sockets, participated in a web-based survey. Data collected included demographics, types of surgery, implant use, external ocular prostheses management (including fabrication and cleaning), complications encountered, and follow-up times. Although bean bag guns are considered a "less-lethal" form of law enforcement, these blunt projectiles have risk. The purpose of this study was to perform a literature review of morbidity and mortality associated with less-lethal munitions and present a case report of a bean bag injury leading to a traumatic globe evisceration and skull base fracture. Patients presenting with bean bag gun associated injuries warrant a high clinical suspicion for injury to deeper structures.
