OBJECTIVE: To describe the histopathologic findings and clinical presentation of intra-temporal facial nerve invasion in primary and metastatic malignancies of the human temporal bone (TB).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all medical records of patients diagnosed with peripheral facial nerve palsy (PFnP) of a malignant origin was performed. Temporal bones underwent standard processing for histologic examination. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained slides were examined by light microscopy. The histologic findings were compared to premortem clinical data.
RESULTS: Eighteen TBs

BACKGROUND: For immediate facial nerve reconstruction during head and neck tumor resection, a great auricular nerve (GAN) graft can be potentially harvested in the same surgical field during tumor resection. However, it is often avoided because a GAN graft is only approximately 5 cm long without any branches, and a sural nerve graft is recommended for larger defects. We investigated the length of the GAN that can be harvested in 18 patients, along with the evaluation of postoperative facial nerve palsy.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 18 cases of immediate facial nerve reconstruction usi

PURPOSE: To examine the etiology, clinical course, and management of recurrent peripheral facial nerve paralysis.
METHODS: Retrospective review at a single tertiary academic center and systematic review of the literature. Clinical presentation, laboratory and imaging findings, treatment and outcome for all cases of recurrent ipsilateral, recurrent contralateral, and bilateral simultaneous cases of facial paralysis are reviewed.
RESULTS: Between 2000 and 2017, 53 patients [41.5% men, 29 median age of onset (range 2.5 wk-75 yr)] were evaluated for recurrent facial nerve paralysis at the author

UNLABELLED: To report stripping surgery in intratemporal facial nerve schwannomas (FNS) with poor facial nerve function.
METHODS: We attempted stripping surgery to completely remove intratemporal FNS with nerve intact in 17 patients, and succeeded in 12 cases. Clinical features of the tumors and the surgical approach were discussed.
RESULTS: Multi-segment involvement was present in 10 cases (58.8%). The tumors were completely removed in all cases, and facial nerve integrity was preserved in 12 patients (70.6%). Six of 12 cases (50.0%) with nerve intact obtained acceptable facial nerve recove

Facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs) are rare, benign tumors that can arise along segments of the facial nerve, including the cerebellopontine angle, internal auditory canal, middle fossa, and temporal bones. Although traditionally managed with gross total resection and facial nerve reconstruction, the resulting facial nerve palsy has prompted a paradigm shift toward functional preservation. Based on>70 surgical cases, we established a tailored strategy based on preoperative facial nerve function and intraoperative facial nerve electromyograms. Patients with mild-to-moderate palsy underwent facial

AIMS: Topical rapamycin is used to reduce facial angiofibromas in patients with tuberous sclerosis (TSC). In the absence of a commercially available preparation, numerous formulations have been tested clinically, although only in the short term.
METHODS: The pharmacy at Angers University Hospital (France) produced a cream formulation that was administered to people presenting this genetic disease. We conducted a questionnaire-based survey among 79 patients with TSC about their perceptions regarding the short-, medium- and long-term efficacy and safety of a topical rapamycin preparation in rel

Paragangliomas (PGLs) of Head and Neck region account for 0.6% of Head and Neck Tumours. These may originate in paraganglionic tissues in the area of carotid bifurcation, vagus nerve, tympanic plexus and very rarely along vertical Facial nerve canal (FNC). We intend to describe a rare case of primary paraganglioma of FNC associated with hypoxia of submarine environment, its characterization and multidisciplinary approach towards its management.

Owing to their scarcity, location, and intricate neurovascular associations, jugular fossa tumors are among the most challenging pathologies encountered by the neurosurgeon.1 While paragangliomas originate within and often occlude the jugular bulb, schwannomas and meningiomas are extra-bulbar and typically do not impede venous flow.2 Schwannomas typically arise from an extradural origin, expanding the jugular foramen.3-5 Meningiomas are intradural and cause hyperostosis of the jugular tubercle.6 We described and have been exposing and resecting jugular fossa tumors through a presigmoid suprabu

We evaluated the outcomes of resection of small acoustic neuromas using the transcanal transvestibular endoscopic approach. Two patients with a small acoustic neuroma were treated using this approach. The sizes of the tumors were 11 × 6 mm and 12 × 10 mm. Both tumors were removed completely without residual tumor tissue, and damage to the facial nerve and cochlear nerve was avoided. No patients developed postoperative vertigo, aggravation of postoperative facial paralysis, severe pain, or permanent postoperative complications. The patients were followed up for 6 months, and none developed recu

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate facial nerve outcomes of various management strategies for facial schwannomas by assimilating individualized patient data from the literature to address controversies in management.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed-National Center for Biotechnology Information and Scopus databases.
REVIEW METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed for studies regarding facial schwannomas. Studies were included if they presented patient-level data, type of intervention, pre- and postintervention House-Brackmann (HB) grades, and tumor location by facial nerve segment.
RESULTS: Ind

We believe it is the treatment of choice for conditions such as resistant verrucae, extensive actinic cheilitis or labial leukoplakia, and for the cosmetic removal of widespread facial tumours, some keloid scars and rhinophyma.

In this paper we present a case of first branchial cleft sinus in hemifacial microsomia. An external opening was placed about 2 cm infero-posterior to the microtic ear remnant. The literature is reviewed and discussed.

A series of 30 chondroblastomas was reviewed: 21 had occurred in the lateral part of the temporal bone, 6 in the mandible, 1 in the parietal bone, and 2 in the region that included the temporal bone and mandible. Of the 30 patients in the series, 20 were males and 9 were females; the sex of 1 patient was not stated. The ages of 29 patients ranged from 2 years 11 months to 70 years (mean, 43.5 years). Radiologic findings were not suggestive of a specific diagnosis, although the lesions appeared to be benign. Histologically, most tumors were classic chondroblastomas. However, some showed aneurys
