UNLABELLED: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially fatal infection involving the subcutaneous tissue and fascia with the development of necrosis of these structures. Acute compartment syndrome occurs when increased pressure within a closed muscle compartment compromises the circulation and function of the tissues within that space. We report the case of a male patient who was admitted to the intensive care unit for the management of urosepsis due to an acute obstructive pyelonephritis complicated by cardiopulmonary arrest. A radial arterial catheter in the left arm was urgently insert

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening infection that can be caused by various procedures or surgery and may develop in healthy elderly patients. Here, we report a case of a 66-year-old man with diabetes mellitus who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy, without complications. However, he visited the emergency department 24 hours after the procedure complaining of abdominal pain. Abdominopelvic computed tomography revealed multiple air bubbles in the right lateral abdominal muscles. After a diagnosis of NF was made, immediate surgical debridement was performed. However, despite three s

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare infection that spreads rapidly along the subcutaneous soft tissue planes. NF rarely involves the periorbital region due to the excellent blood supply of this region. We report a case of periorbital necrotising fasciitis following herpes zoster (HZ) in an immunocompromised 70-year-old patient with a dramatically rapid evolution into septic shock. In our patient, the surprisingly rapid spread of the bacterial superinfection led the periorbital cellulitis to turn into frank NF within 2 hours, with an overwhelming evolution. Despite the prompt start of a system

Streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis (NF) causes high morbidity and mortality despite state-of-the-art therapy. Low incidence and rapid disease progression, necessitating immediate initiation of therapy, have proven challenging aspects for setting up prospective randomized trials. This has resulted in little therapeutic progress over the past decade. The validation of reliable murine NF models to study both pathogenesis and optimized therapeutic regimens of streptococcal NF are thus essential. In this study, we characterized a murine NF model and compared the pathology with an in-depth tissue a

One of the most feared complications in colorectal surgery is an anastomotic leak (AL) following a colorectal resection. While various recommendations have been proposed to prevent this potentially fatal complication, anastomotic leaks still occur. We present a case of an AL resulting in a complicated and fatal outcome. This case demonstrates the importance of high clinical suspicion, early recognition, and immediate management.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a surgical diagnosis characterized by a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection, widespread tissue necrosis, and associated systemic illness. Friability of the superficial fascia, dishwater-gray exudate, and absence of pus are surgical characteristics of this diagnosis. Due to rapid progression of the infection, early recognition and aggressive surgical debridement are crucial to reduce mortality. Despite being commonly seen by general, plastic, and orthopedic surgeons, NF is an extremely rare spine surgery emergency. Our objective is to report on a

Necrotizing fasciitis is most often caused by either polymicrobial bacterial infections or by Gram-positive organisms, such as Streptococcus or Staphylococcus; however, rare cases of fungal necrotizing fasciitis have been reported. Candida parapsilosis is an emerging fungal pathogen. This fungus grows in either a yeast or pseudohyphal form. C. parapsilosis has been reported to cause keratitis, intraocular infection, and seeding of frontalis slings. C. parapsilosis is a commensal of human skin and can be acquired by nosocomial spread. Necrotizing fasciitis due to Candida has rarely been reporte

Necrotizing fasciitis is one of the uncommon presentations of a rapidly spreading subcutaneous tissue infection. Although the actual cause is unclear in many cases, most of them are due to the rapid proliferation of microorganisms. Retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis is extremely rare. It is a potentially lethal infection that requires immediate and aggressive surgical care. Early diagnosis is the key to a better prognosis. The possibility of retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis should be suspected in patients with symptoms of sepsis that are disproportionate to clinical findings. The rapid

BACKGROUND: This report presents an immunocompetent lady suffering from Candida parapsilosis associated with polybacterial cervical necrotizing fasciitis and descending mediastinitis. A literature review and management of invasive candidiasis is discussed.
METHODS: A 57-year-old healthy lady presented with cervical necrotizing fasciitis and descending mediastinitis. She was promptly managed with emergency debridement. Both blood and tissue culture yielded multiple microorganisms including C. parapsilosis.
RESULTS: The patient recovered progressively. She was discharged 2 months later.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening infection requiring extensive debridement that may necessitate amputation. Free tissue transfer (FTT) is an option for reconstruction in difficult cases. Currently, only case reports have described FTT in the setting of NF, and comprehensive evidence on flap outcomes is lacking. The present study characterizes outcomes in patients with FTT following NF.
METHODS: All patients admitted with NF between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2011 to our level 1 burns/trauma referral center were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: No significa

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an infection of the soft tissues pathology with high mortality that spreads through the fascial planes and rarely seen in head and neck region. The cause of infection is often odontogenic problems. Broad-spectrum antibiotics, surgical debridement, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) are important for the treatment of disease. We report a case of cervical NF in a 33-year-old woman who was treated with rapid surgical debridement and simultaneous HBO.

This report describes a case of necrotizing fasciitis presenting with septic shock due to an Aeromonas infection. The patient cut his foot while mowing the lawn and then spent time in a pool with black mold. He began feeling ill and developed swelling and a quarter-sized black area on his right lower extremity. Despite being hemodynamically unstable with systolic blood pressure in the low 70s, the patient was transferred to our facility from outside hospital 100 miles away. Upon arriving to facility, the patient appeared to be septic and the infected area of skin had grown. Irrigation and debr

We report a fatal case of post-partum streptococcal toxic shock syndrome in a patient who was previously healthy and had presented to the emergency department with an extensive blistering ecchymotic lesions over her right buttock and thigh associated with severe pain. The pregnancy had been uncomplicated, and the mode of delivery had been spontaneous vaginal delivery with an episiotomy. She was found to have septicemic shock requiring high inotropic support. Subsequently, she was treated for necrotizing fasciitis, complicated by septicemic shock and multiple organ failures. A consensus was rea

Necrotizing fasciitis was recognized centuries ago by physicians. It is a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal soft-tissue infection that is typified by soft-tissue necrosis, especially affecting the subcutaneous tissues and fascia. Cervico-facial necrotizing fasciitis is said to be uncommon, but when it occurs, it is often of odontogenic origin and has severe consequences if not promptly treated. Possible underlying systemic diseases and the source of infection should be addressed and treated appropriately. We present two cases of extensive cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis, one of whi

BACKGROUND: The aims of this paper were to review our experience with necrotizing fasciitis at Middlemore Hospital and to define the trends in incidence, inpatient mortality and microbiological profile.
METHODS: A computerized search of the electronic medical records was undertaken to identify adult patients with a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis between January 2000 and December 2010. A retrospective review of the clinical records was performed.
RESULTS: Of the 138 patients with necrotizing fasciitis identified, 129 had their diagnosis confirmed at operation. The mortality at 30 days was
