Psychological distress of parents in conflict areas: the mediating role of war atrocities, normative stressors and family resources.

BACKGROUND: Despite the ongoing controversy regarding which types of stressors or resources contribute to psychological distress, there has been little research examining the relationship between war trauma, normative stressors, family resources for management and psychopathology. AIMS: This study investigated the differences between mothers and fathers in psychological distress, normative stressors and war atrocities experienced, and family's resources for management. It was hypothesized that a combination of risk variables and protective variables would be predictive of psychological distre…

Mobile app-based intervention for paternal perinatal depression, anxiety, and stress: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Paternal perinatal mental health significantly impacts family outcomes, yet fathers are often overlooked and underserved in mental health services. This study evaluates the efficacy of a mindfulness-based cognitive behaviour therapy intervention delivered via mobile app to address paternal perinatal depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. METHOD: A randomised controlled trial was conducted with perinatal fathers experiencing moderate depression, anxiety, or stress symptoms. Participants were assigned to either the Rover app mindfulness-based CBT intervention (n = 81) or an activ…

Paternal metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors for fetal growth restriction: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Fathers of low-birth weight offspring are more likely to have type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in later life. We investigated whether paternal insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk factors were evident at the time that fetal growth-restricted offspring were born. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We carried out a case-control study of men who fathered pregnancies affected by fetal growth restriction, in the absence of recognized fetal disease (n = 42), compared with men who fathered normal-birth weight offspring (n = 77). All mothers were healthy, nonsmoking, and similar …

Anxiety and quality of life of parents with children diagnosed with an anorectal malformation or Hirschsprung disease.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in anxiety and quality of life (QOL) between mothers and fathers of children with anorectal malformations (ARM) or Hirschsprung disease (HD). In addition, anxiety of parents of newborns was compared with parents of children in the age-group of 10 to 13 years. METHODS: Parents of 44 patients with ARM or HD completed the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-BREF (26 items) and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-trait 10 items, STAI-state 6 items). They were divided into two groups according to their chil…

Perceptions of masculinity and fatherhood among men experiencing homelessness.

This study explored the perceptions of fatherhood held by 11 men living in a homeless shelter. Using consensual qualitative research methodology (CQR; Hill, 2012), we investigated perceptions of masculinity and fatherhood among fathers experiencing homelessness. Participants described (a) their perceptions of masculinity and fatherhood and changes resulting from homelessness, (b) physical and psychological challenges of being a father experiencing homelessness, and (c) expectations of homeless fathers. The fathers generally expressed feelings of low self-esteem related to their perceived diffi…

Family Disruption and Intergenerational Reproduction: Comparing the Influences of Married Parents, Divorced Parents, and Stepparents.

The transmission of individual characteristics and behaviors across generations has frequently been studied in the social sciences. For a growing number of children, however, the biological father was present in the household for only part of the time; and for many children, stepfathers were present. What are the implications of these changes for the process of intergenerational transmission? To answer this question, this article compares intergenerational transmission among married, divorced, and stepparents. Two forms of reproduction are studied: educational attainment and church attendance.…

Health-related quality of life following hematopoietic stem cell transplant during childhood.

The purpose of this study is to examine the self-reported and parent-reported health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children (age<19 years) who received a hematopoietic (bone marrow, cord blood, or peripheral blood) stem cell transplant (SCT) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). A total of 35 families participated: 31 SCT recipients, 35 mothers, and 28 fathers. Mean scores were 73.6 child, 71.2 mothers, and 76.2 fathers (range of 0-100, with high scores indicating better HRQoL). No significant overall HRQoL difference between parent and child were reported. Mothers reported…

Prenatal paternal depression, anxiety, and somatic symptom burden in different risk samples: an explorative study.

PURPOSE: Growing evidence implies that transition to parenthood triggers symptoms of mental burden not only in women but likewise in men, especially in high-risk pregnancies. This is the first study that examined and compared the prevalence rates of depression, anxiety, and somatic symptom burden of expectant fathers who face different risk situations during pregnancy. METHODS: Prevalence rates of paternal depression (Edinburgh postnatal depression scale), anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder seven), and somatic symptom burden (somatic symptom scale eight) were examined in two risk samples a…

Paternal Perinatal Depression in Modern-Day Fatherhood.

Postpartum depression in new mothers has become a widely recognized public health concern. Paternal perinatal depression (PPND) and the mental health of fathers in the perinatal period continues to receive significantly less public attention. Overall prevalence rates of up to 25% have been documented in first-time fathers. The presence of maternal depression, unsatisfactory couple relationships, and certain psychosocial and biological risk factors are associated with poor paternal bonding and increased depression risk. Depressed fathers experience excessive self-criticism, restlessness, irrita…

METHODS: We used data from the Etude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) cohort study. Participating mothers gave birth in 2011 in a representative sample of 320 maternity hospitals in mainland France. Inclusion criteria were single or twin livebirths born after at least 33 weeks' gestatio…
