In this study, we have analyzed the expression and function of Gremlin in the developing avian limb. Gremlin is a member of the DAN family of BMP antagonists highly conserved through evolution able to bind and block BMP2, BMP4 and BMP7. At early stages of development, gremlin is expressed in the dorsal and ventral mesoderm in a pattern complementary to that of bmp2, bmp4 and bmp7. The maintenance of gremlin expression at these stages is under the control of the AER, ZPA, and BMPs. Exogenous administration of recombinant Gremlin indicates that this protein is involved in the control of limb out

Pathogenicity, pathogenesis, and antigenic relatedness of four avian reovirus isolates obtained from commercially reared broilers were investigated. Chickens of various ages were inoculated both orally and intratracheally with reovirus. Based on disease signs, mortality, weight depression, tissue lesions, invasiveness, and viral persistence in chickens inoculated at 1 day of age, the isolates were classified as being of low, intermediate, or high pathogenicity. The low-pathogenicity isolate (2177) did not cause mortality, weight depression, or clinical disease. The isolate of intermediate path

Hair pulling and eating has not yet received attention in the nonhuman primate literature. Hair pulling and eating was recorded 388 times in two heterogeneous troops of healthy rhesus monkeys that were kept according to modern management practices. The behavior in question consists of the following sequence: pulling with the fingers (1/3 of cases) or with the teeth (2/3 of cases) tufts of hair from one's own or from a partner's coat; chewing the hair and finally swallowing it; the undigested material is excreted in the feces. Hair pulling was almost exclusively (378/388) partner-directed. It w

Reaction of phenacetin (CAS: 62-44-2; p-acetophenetidide) with nitrous fumes (N2O3) in glacial acetic acid at 0-5 degrees C yields N-nitrosophenacetin (NP), 2-nitrophenacetin, N-nitroso-2-nitrophenacetin (NNP), and other compounds. Both NP and NNP are fairly stable at low temperature (-30 degrees C) but extremely labile at ambient temperature. NP (median lethal dose to Sprague-Dawley rat: 21 mg/kg body wt) is 80 times more toxic than its parent compound phenacetin and is directly mutagenic to bacterial cells including Salmonella typhimurium and Sarcina lutea. The mutagenicity of NP is comparab

Interfaces govern how photons enter, propagate within and leave functional photoelectric devices. In solar cells, photodetectors and light-emitting diodes, small optical losses at outer surfaces, buried transport layers or emissive interfaces can determine whether a high-quality semiconductor stack reaches its device-level potential. Natural optical surfaces offer a compact design library: compound eyes collect light over broad angles, butterfly and feather architectures impose anisotropic scattering, moth and cicada wings suppress reflection through subwavelength topography, and lotus-like su

Circoviruses (family Circoviridae) are small, single-stranded DNA viruses known to infect a broad range of bird species. The Beak and Feather Disease Virus (BFDV), typically associated with parrots, has occasionally been reported in unrelated avian taxa, raising questions about host range and potential spillover. We investigated BFDV-like sequences in three sympatric vultures breeding in Spain (Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus, cinereous vulture Aegypius monachus, and griffon vulture Gyps fulvus). PCR screening revealed low and inconsistent prevalence in Egyptian vultures (7.4%, n = 163)

L-asparaginase is an amidohydrolase enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of L-asparagine into L-aspartic acid and ammonia. This enzyme has significant biotechnological applications, functioning as an antineoplastic agent in the pharmaceutical industry and as a tool for reducing acrylamide formation in the food industry. This study aimed to identify a filamentous fungus strain capable of synthesizing a new L-asparaginase and to perform its biochemical characterisation. Among the fungal isolates screened using plate assays and submerged fermentation, Cunninghamella echinulata strain PA3S12MM was

Manganese is an essential trace element with known immunomodulatory properties, yet the effects of organic manganese supplementation on disease resistance in poultry remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the safety and immunoprotective efficacy of orally administered manganese gluconate in yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 120 seven-day-old broilers were randomly allocated to four groups and orally administered either vehicle control or manganese gluconate at 1, 5, or 10 mg/kg body weight for 14 consecutive days. No adverse health responses were observed across all treatment group

In this study we compare the intensity and prevalence of parasites and reproductive parameters across 14 bird populations sampled in two different seasons separated by approximately 10 years apart, in the Western Palearctic, to test for climate-parasite associations. Overall, 9 different bird species and 62 different host-parasite interactions were studied. We found non-significant trends between the two sampling years in terms of reduced clutch and brood size. However, we observed a decrease in population size between the sampling years, while differences in laying date were negatively relate

Pediculosis caused by chewing lice may pose a threat to domesticated and wild birds' health. These ectoparasites can cause pruritus, poor feather condition and do weaken hosts making them susceptible to other infections. Species of the genus Saemundssonia which are called ecomorphic head lice parasitize a wide range of aquatic birds from the family Laridae. The present report describes a heavy infestation of yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) with Saemundssonia species in Iran. Three yellow-legged gulls that were brought to Mashhad Birds Garden (northeastern Iran) were examined visually f

Chemical pollution is a global concern as contaminants are transported and reach even the remote regions of Antarctica. Seabirds serve as important sentinels of pollution due to their high trophic position and wide distribution. This study examines the influence of migration and trophic ecology on the exposure of two Antarctic seabirds, Wilson's storm petrel (Oceanites oceanicus - Ooc), and Cape petrel (Daption capense - Dca), to chemical elements and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Our methodology involved assessing the concentration of these pollutants in feather samples obtained from carc

Ducks infected with duck circovirus (DuCV) show symptoms such as feather loss, growth retardation and low body weight in the flock. The virus induces immunosuppression and increases the prevalence of infection with other pathogens. However, most studies on duck circovirus were focused on coinfection, and fewer studies had been conducted on the pathogenicity of duck circovirus alone. The aim of the present study was to investigate the pathogenesis of DuCV-1 in experimentally infected specific pathogen-free ducks. In this study, we sequenced the whole genome of a strain of duck circovirus and id

Poultry farming is one of the most efficient animal husbandry methods and it provides nutritional security to a significant number of the world population. Using modern intensive farming techniques, global production has reached 133.4 mil. t in 2020, with a steady growth each year. Such intensive growth methods however lead to a significant environmental footprint. Waste materials such as poultry litter and manure can pose a serious threat to environmental and human health, and need to be managed properly. Poultry production and waste by-products are linked to NH3, N2O and CH4 emissions, and h

Open source in-situ environmental sensor hardware continues to expand across the globe for a variety of applications. Sensor-management systems typically perform three fundamental tasks: sample sensors at a specified time or period, save data onto retrievable media, and switch power to components on and off in between sample cycles to conserve battery energy and increase field operation time. These tasks are commonly accomplished through integrating separate off-the-shelf components into the desired system such as: power relays, SD card hardware, Real-Time Clocks (RTCs), and coin cell batterie

Biological nitrogen (N) fixation is an important process supporting primary production in ecosystems, especially in those where N availability is limiting growth, such as peatlands and boreal forests. In many peatlands, peat mosses (genus Sphagnum) are the prime ecosystem engineers, and like feather mosses in boreal forests, they are associated with a diverse community of diazotrophs (N2-fixing microorganisms) that live in and on their tissue. The large variation in N2 fixation rates reported in literature remains, however, to be explained. To assess the potential roles of habitat (including n

Aves polyomavirus 1, psittacine beak and feather disease virus, and psittacid herpesvirus 1 are important pathogens of psittacine birds with the potential to cause substantial morbidity and mortality. Using publically available nucleotide sequences, we developed and validated a triplex real-time PCR (rtPCR) assay to rapidly detect these 3 viruses. The assay had high analytical sensitivity, detecting <6 copies of viral DNA per reaction, and 100% analytical specificity, showing no cross-reactivity with 59 other animal pathogens. Archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from psittacine

Model structure selection is an important step in high-dimensional time-series modelling. Traditionally AIC and BIC have been used for this purpose, however, only post model estimation. On the other hand, modern approaches use penalized regression methods, but the optimization is in a user-specified model class. In this work, we propose a pre-estimation approach based on two novel correlation functions, namely, the scalar autocorrelation function (SACF) and the scalar inverse autocorrelation function (SIACF) for identifying the appropriate model class among the vector autoregressive (VAR), vec

INTRODUCTION: Carcinocythemia is a rare phenomenon defined as morphologically identifiable, circulating tumor cells in the peripheral blood. No modern case series of carcinocythemia exists in the literature.
METHODS: Blood smears from carcinocythemia patients were reviewed and associated clinicopathologic findings described and compared to the literature. When available, bone marrows were examined.
RESULTS: We identified 7 carcinocythemia cases over 3 years at our institution in 5 females and 2 males with a median age of 57 and compare them to 26 case reports in the literature (19 females, 1

We measured total mercury (THg) and monomethyl mercury (MMHg) concentrations and mercury (Hg) isotopic compositions in sediment and aquatic organisms from the Yuba River (California, USA) to identify Hg sources and biogeochemical transformations downstream of a historical gold mining region. Sediment THg concentrations and δ(202)Hg decreased from the upper Yuba Fan to the lower Yuba Fan and the Feather River. These results are consistent with the release of Hg during gold mining followed by downstream mixing and dilution. The Hg isotopic composition of Yuba Fan sediment (δ(202)Hg = -0.38 ± 0.1
