Daphnia magna responses to fish kairomone and chlorpromazine exposures.

To avoid being preyed, organisms must be able to identify predatory threats by sensing molecules released by predators (kairomones), and to employ effective strategies to prevent detection by predators. Furthermore, in the wild, organisms are also exposed to chemicals that may alter their behavioral traits, such as neuroactive pharmaceuticals. Considering the co-occurrence of both types of chemicals, their possible interaction needs to be studied. To address this topic, the aim of this study was to verify the effects of fish kairomone (FK - a chemical associated to putative predation by fish)

Gastrin releasing peptide-induced satiety is associated with hypothalamic and brainstem changes in chicks.

Gastrin releasing peptide (GRP) is involved in the stimulation of gastric acid release from the stomach. It also mediates effects on feeding behavior. It is associated with anorexigenic effects in both mammalian and avian species, but the mechanism of action is unknown in any species. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the hypothalamic and brainstem mechanisms mediating GRP-induced satiety in chicks. In Experiment 1, chicks that received intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of GRP reduced food intake for up to 150 min following injection and reduced water intake up to 120 …

Anorexic behavior and elevation of hypothalamic malonyl-CoA in socially defeated rats.

Suppression of body weight and eating disorders, such as anorexia, are one of the major symptoms of psychiatric disorders such as depression … s of malonyl-CoA in the hypothalamus of socially defeated rats. Hypothalamic malonyl-CoA controlled feeding behavior and elevation of malonyl-CoA in the hypothalamus induced inhibition of food intake. Our findings suggest that the suppression of body weight gain caused by social defeat stress is caused by anorexic feeding behavior via an increased concentration of …

Feeding rhythms in constant light and constant darkness: the role of the eyes and the effect of melatonin infusion.

Exposure to constant light abolishes circadian behavioral rhythms of locomotion and feeding as well as circulating melatonin rhythms in pigeons (Columba livia). To determine if feeding rhythmicity could be maintained in pigeons exposed to constant light, periodic infusions; (10 h/day) of melatonin were administered to pinealectomized and bilaterally retinectomized/pinealectomized pigeons under conditions of both constant darkness and constant light. The infusions were sufficient to entrain rhythmicity in pinealectomized pigeons in constant darkness and to restore and maintain rhythmicity in bi

Diminished insulin sensitivity is associated with altered brain activation to food cues and with risk for obesity - Implications for individuals born small for gestational age.

While classically linked to memory, the hippocampus is also a feeding behavior modulator due to its multiple interconnected pathways with other brain regions and expression of receptors for metabolic hormones. Here we tested whether variations in insulin sensitivity would be correlated with differential brain activation following exposure to palatable food cues, as well as with variations in implicit food memory in a cohort of healthy adolescents, some of whom were born small for gestational age (SGA). Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) was positively correlated with …

Synaptic plasticity and the role of astrocytes in central metabolic circuits.

Neural circuits in the brain, primarily in the hypothalamus, are paramount to the homeostatic control of feeding and energy utilization. They integrate hunger, satiety, and body adiposity cues from the periphery and mediate the appropriate behavioral and physiological responses to satisfy the energy demands of the animal. Notably, perturbations in central homeostatic circuits have been linked to the etiology of excessive feeding and obesity. Considering the ever-changing energy requirements of the animal and required adaptations, it is not surprising that brain-feeding circuits remain plastic

Chin prompt plus re-presentation as treatment for expulsion in children with feeding disorders.

Expulsion (spitting out food) is a problem behavior observed in many children with feeding disorders. In the current investigation, we identified 4 children diagnosed with a feeding disorder who exhibited high rates of expulsion. Treatment with re-presentation (placing expelled liquids or solids back into the child's mouth) was not effective in reducing expulsion. Therefore, we added a chin-prompt procedure (the feeder applied gentle upward pressure to the child's chin and lower lip) for the initial presentation and the re-presentation. Chin prompt plus re-presentation resulted in low rates of

Feeding-induced changes of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH)-like immunoreactivity in goldfish brain.

Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) influences feeding behavior in the goldfish and exerts an anorexigenic action in goldfish brain, unlike its orexigenic action in mammals. Despite a growing body of knowledge concerning MCH function in mammals, the role of MCH in appetite has not yet been well studied in fish. The aim of the present study was to investigate the involvement of endogenous MCH in the feeding behavior of the goldfish. We examined the distribution of MCH-like immunoreactivity (MCH-LI) in the goldfish brain and the effect of feeding status…

Sensory Receptors Associated with the Labial Tip and Precibarium of Philaenus spumarius L. (Hemiptera: Aphrophoride).

The meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), is an important vector for the xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells, Raju, Hung, Weisburg, Mandelco-Paul, and Brenner), which is associated with olive quick decline syndrome in southern Italy. The mouthparts of Hemiptera have important roles in host plant selection, feeding behavior and for vectoring pathogens that cause plant diseases. In this study, the functional morphology of the sensory structures located on the labium tip and precibarium of P. spumarius was investigated using scanning and trans…

Hypothalamic and hindbrain NPY, AGRP and NE increase consummatory feeding responses.

Feeding behavior is comprised of both appetitive and consummatory responses to food. Appetitive responses include the motivated acquisition of food. Consummatory responses, including swallowing, are those that move the food from the mouth to the stomach. Intraoral delivery of liquid food bypasses the requirement for appetitive responses and has been used to examine consummatory responses directly in intact rats. In the present study, we administered neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related protein (AGRP) and norepinephrine (NE), into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) or into th…

[Control of ingestive behavior and rumination by neuropeptides].

In sheep as in other species, intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of picomolar doses of several peptide hormones affects food intake and rumination, suggesting that these hormones play a role in the physiological control of feeding behavior. Their effects depend on their duration (short vs long-term) and/or their nature (orexigenic vs anorexigenic). Among the short-term satiety factors, CCK8, CRF and calcitonin, administered ICV, decrease food intake by reducing the rate (CCK8) or the duration (CRF, calcitonin) of ingestion; in contrast, the gastrin group of peptides (gastrin 17, pent…

Feeding-elicited cataplexy in orexin knockout mice.

Mice lacking orexin/hypocretin signaling have sudden episodes of atonia and paralysis during active wakefulness. These events strongly resemble cataplexy, episodes of sudden muscle weakness triggered by strong positive emotions in people with narcolepsy, but it remains unknown whether murine cataplexy is triggered by positive emotions. To determine whether positive emotions elicit murine cataplexy, we placed orexin knockout (KO) mice on a scheduled feeding protocol with regular or highly palatable food. Baseline sleep/wake behavior was recorded with ad libitum regular chow. Mice were then plac

Resynchronized rhythmic oscillations of gut microbiota drive time-restricted feeding induced nonalcoholic steatohepatitis alleviation.

With the drive of the endogenous circadian clock and external cues such as feeding behavior, the microbial community generates rhythmic oscillations in composition and function. Microbial oscillations are crucial in orchestrating host metabolic homeostasis during the predictable 24-hour diurnal cycle. A time-restricted feeding (TRF) regimen is a promising dietary strategy to optimize energy utilization, alleviate metabolic syndrome and reinforce microbial cyclical fluctuations. However, the causative relationship between reinforced microbial rhythmicity and TRF-induced metabolic improvement re…

Reproducing the Rift Valley fever virus mosquito-lamb-mosquito transmission cycle.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne bunyavirus that is pathogenic to ruminants and humans. The virus is endemic to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula where outbreaks are characterized by abortion storms and mortality of newborns, particularly in sheep herds. Vector competence experiments in laboratory settings have suggested that over 50 mosquito species are capable of transmitting RVFV. Transmission of mosquito-borne viruses in the field is however influenced by numerous factors, including population densities, blood feeding behavior, extrinsic incubation period, longevity of vec…

Does maternal control during feeding moderate early infant weight gain?

OBJECTIVE: Our objective with this study was to examine whether observed maternal control during feeding at 6 months of age moderates the development of early infant weight gain during the first year of life. METHODS: Sixty-nine women were observed feeding their 6-month-old infants during a standard meal. Mealtimes were coded for maternal use of controlling feeding behavior. All infants were weighed at birth and at 6 and 12 months of age, and weight gain was calculated from birth to 6 months and from 6 to 12 months. Weight scores and weight gain scores were standardized for prematurity, age, …

Modeling reticular and ventral ruminal pH of lactating dairy cows using ingestion and rumination behavior.

The prevention and control of metabolic and digestive diseases is an enormous challenge in dairy farming. Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is assumed to be the most severe feed-related disorder and it impairs both animal health and economic efficiency. Currently, ruminal pH as well as variables derived from the daily pH curve are the main indicators for SARA. The objective of this study was to explain the daily pH course in the ventral rumen and reticulum of dairy cows using ingestion pattern and rumination behavior data gathered by automated data recording systems. The data of 13 ruminally fi
