[Psychological adjustment to invasive surgical and medicamentous tumor treatment of osteosarcoma patients with rotation-plasty].

Ten patients with osteosarcomas and rotation plasties made themselves available for a psychological survey. The time elapsed after their operations was between two and ten years, giving an average of six years. All patients were free of tumours at the time of the follow-up examination. Both in personal interviews and in psychological tests, it was possible to observe a very positive development of these patients' attitudes. Contributory factors in this context were discussions with the doctors administering treatment, the cheerful atmosphere of the hospital and the nursing staff, the physicoth

Neurologic complications of pelvic intraarterial chemoembolization performed with collagen material and cisplatin.

In three patients neurologic complications developed after chemoembolization procedures were performed with cisplatin and a new collagen material. Three patients with dominant unilateral stage III cervical carcinoma were entered into an investigative protocol attempting to control regional disease and pain with chemoembolization. All three patients had previously undergone surgery, radiation therapy, and intraarterial chemoembolization or chemoinfusion. Each case was complicated by neurologic deficits. A collagen material was administered that acts at a precapillary level and reduces the likel

[Pneumonectomy with extracorporeal circulation to treat pulmonary metastasis].

Surgical resection of pulmonary metastasis is appropriate provided the general principals of oncological surgery are followed. Complete excision of the metastatic tumor is associated with long-term survival and low perioperative mortality. We present 2 cases of single pulmonary metastasis from osteosarcoma with cardiac involvement. In both cases, complete excision required left pneumonectomy by sternotomy with extracorporeal circulation. The outcomes were favorable, no perioperative complications were reported, and the patients remained free of disease at 14 and 17 months after surgery. In con

Malignant "triton" tumors: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of nine cases.

Nine cases of malignant "triton" tumors, based on the coexistence of rhabdomyoblasts and Schwann cell elements, were analyzed clinicopathologically and immunocytochemically. All tumors were stained for myoglobin and S-100 protein by the immunoperoxidase technique. Six of the nine patients were in the third or fourth decade of life. Six cases were associated with von Recklinghausen's disease, and the tumors in two cases grew along nerve trunks. The malignant tumors showed a predilection for the thigh and buttock. Six of the seven deaths occurred within two years of the initial treatments. Stron

Relationships between material properties and CT scan data of cortical bone with and without metastatic lesions.

Breast, prostate, lung, and other cancers can metastasize to bone and lead to pathological fracture. To lay the groundwork for new clinical techniques for assessing the risk of pathological fracture, we identified relationships between density measured using quantitative computed tomography (rhoQCT), longitudinal mechanical properties, and ash density (rhoAsh) of cortical bone from femoral diaphyses with and without metastatic lesions from breast, prostate, and lung cancer (bone with metastases from six donors; bone without metastases from one donor with cancer and two donors without cancer).

Proximal Femoral Replacement or Revision Stem Hemiarthroplasty for Metastatic Disease of the Proximal Femur-Is There Any Notable Difference?

BACKGROUND: The incidence of metastatic cancer continues to increase, becoming a prevalent condition in oncology orthopaedic practice. The proximal femur is the third most common site of skeletal metastases. Two possible options for endoprosthetic reconstruction of proximal femur metastasis include proximal femur resection and replacement with megaprosthesis and hemiarthroplasty with a long-cemented revision stem. METHODS: To facilitate better decision making, we conducted a retrospective study comparing these alternatives. This is a single-institution, retrospective, observational study. Pat

Total femoral replacement for oncologic indications: Functional outcomes, complications, and implant survival rates.

OBJECTIVE: Total femoral replacements for oncological indications are a rare indication, and there is limited data on functional outcomes, complications, and implant survival rates. The purpose of this study was to investigate functional outcomes, the rate and nature of com plications associated with this technique, and the survival rates of the implant used. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series from a single subspeciality orthopedic oncology unit in an urban referral center that evalu ated patients treated between January 2000 and May 2023. A total of 27 patients were included in the

Nonossifying Fibromas: A Computed Tomography-based Criteria to Predict Fracture Risk.

BACKGROUND: Nonossifying fibroma (NOF) is the most common benign osseous lesion in children; however, our understanding of which lesions progress to a fracture remains unclear. In this study, we seek to formulate a classification system for NOFs to assess for fracture risk and determine what this classification system tells us regarding fracture risk of the distal tibia and distal femur NOFs. METHODS: Charts were retrospectively reviewed for patients with NOFs. A 4-point criteria was created and used to calculate fracture risk for distal tibia and distal femur NOFs. The analysis included inci

Periprosthetic femoral fractures around tumor endoprostheses treated with limited revision surgery combined with allograft: A case report.

RATIONALE: Old periprosthetic femoral fractures (OPFFs) around a tumor prosthesis of the knee present formidable problems for orthopedic oncologists; large bone defects and inappropriate biomechanics of the revision implant design can impair successful reconstruction. Limited literature is available on the reconstruction of OPFFs using revision combined with massive allograft following resection of a bone tumor around the knee joint. In this study, we present the first reported case in the English literature of a limited revision followed by several segmental allografts for the reconstruction

[Application of debridement and bone autografting combined with proximal femoral anatomical plates for benign tumor in proximal femur].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effects of debridement and bone autografting combined with proximal femoral anatomical plate in treating benign tumor in proximal femur. METHODS: From January 2010 to October 2014, 30 patients with benign tumor in proximal femur were treated with debridement, autogenic ilium, autogenic ilium and allogeneic bone implant, and anatomic plate fixation. Among them, there were 13 males and 17 females aged from 12 to 68 years old with an average of 42 years old. The courses ranged from 1 month to 2 years with an average of 9 months. MSTS scoring were observed and c

A treatment strategy for proximal femoral benign bone lesions in children and recommended surgical procedures: retrospective analysis of 62 patients.

PURPOSE: We aimed to develop a surgical treatment strategy for benign bone lesions of the proximal femur based upon retrospective review of our data in 62 children. METHODS: Sixty-two children [38 male, 24 female; median age 9 years (range 5-18 years)] with proximal femoral benign bone lesions were surgically treated between 2005 and 2013. Histopathological diagnoses were simple (31) or aneurysmal (27) bone cysts, and nonossifying fibromas (4). The pathological fracture rate was 77.4 %. Surgical treatment was determined due to four criteria, including patient's skeletal maturity, localization

Early tumor response to intraarterial or intravenous administration of carboplatin to treat naturally occurring lower urinary tract carcinoma in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Survival times and tumor responses associated with malignant neoplasia of the lower urinary tract are poor despite the vast array of current treatments. Therefore, the evaluation of alternative treatments, such as intraarterial administration of chemotherapy (IAC) should be considered. OBJECTIVE: To describe a technique for superselective catheterization for IAC and to evaluate initial tumor response by ultrasonography after both IAC and intravenous administration of chemotherapy (IVC). ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs with lower urinary tract neoplasia treated with either IVC (n = 15)

An iatrogenic sigmoid perforation caused by an aortobifemoral graft mimicking an advanced colon cancer.

A 74-year-old man was transferred to our hospital due to melena and syncope. He had a history of an abdominal aortic aneurysm treated with aortobifemoral grafting 15 years previously. One month before admission, he reported several episodes of melena for which he underwent repeated gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations. None of these examinations revealed the site of gastrointestinal bleeding. Aortoenteric fistulae can therefore be missed if they are not considered in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding due to their rarity. As a result, secondary aortoenteric fistulae sh

Case report: Common femoral artery ligation after sarcoma resection in an infant.

BACKGROUND: Vascular reconstruction in infants constitutes a surgical challenge and is indicated frequently for acute occlusions. With the presence of a subacute vascular occlusion, including that produced by tumor resection, collateral circulation develops quickly. Thus a surgeon can consider tumor and vessel resection, without the need for vascular reconstruction. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the 2-year postoperative outcome of a 2-month-old boy who had a groin synovial cell sarcoma with vascular involvement, treated using limb salvage surgery with resection of the femoral vessels and withou

Spontaneous bilateral subcapital hip fracture due to multiple myeloma: an 18-month follow-up.

We present a rare case of bilateral subcapital hip fracture as a first sign of multiple myeloma in a young man. Right femoral neck fracture was treated by three Asnis screws and the left one by hemiarthroplasty. In order to avoid implant failure, we used zoledronic acid, a bisphosphonate compound, instead of methacrylate cement. After an 18-month follow-up, there was no evidence of avascular necrosis, no implant failure and no periprothetic fracture.

Venous thrombo-embolism following inferior petrosal sinus sampling in Cushing's disease.

Bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling for ACTH with corticotrophin releasing hormone stimulation has become an established test in differentiating pituitary Cushing's disease from Cushing's syndrome due to ectopic ACTH secretion. We report two patients with Cushing's disease who developed thromboembolic complications soon after inferior petrosal sinus sampling. We discuss the possible mechanisms leading to this complication in a syndrome in which thromboembolic complications are well recognized and highlight the need for consideration of prophylactic anticoagulation.
