The author presents cases of dysmorphic children born to alcoholic mothers to illustrate his discussion of the "fetal alcohol syndrome". The fact that this malformative syndrome has not been recognized before 1968 is amazing, particularly if one considers the high frequency of alcohol addiction and the relative specificity of the birth defects making up the syndrome. Newborns from severely alcoholic mothers are small for date, microcephalic, and they have abnormal facial features, as well as an increased frequency of other malformations (heart, genitalia, extremities). Neurological and mental

Fetal cardiotocography revealed no or poor variability and no reactivity to fetal movements and or external stimuli in four drunken women. This was taken as a sign of fetal hypoxia in one patient and led to emergency caesarean section although, the infant was not hypoxic. In the other three patients, cardiotocography normalized within 11-14 h when the mothers became sober.

Alcohol dependence is correlated with a wide spectrum of medical, psychological, behavioral, and social problems. Acute alcohol abuse causes damage to and functional impairment of several organs affecting protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism. Mitochondria participate with the conversion of acetaldehyde into acetate and the generation of increased amounts of NADH. Prenatal exposure to ethanol during fetal development induces a wide spectrum of adverse effects in offspring, such as neurologic abnormalities and pre- and post-natal growth retardation. Antioxidant effects have been described d

UNLABELLED: Alcohol (ethanol) is one of the most widely consumed drugs. Alcohol consumption by pregnant women may result in a range of fetal abnormalities termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The cerebrovascular system is emerging as a critical target of alcohol in the developing brain. We recently showed that three episodes of prenatal alcohol exposure resulting in 80 mg/dL alcohol in maternal blood during mid-pregnancy up-regulated anandamide-induced dilation of fetal cerebral arteries. Moreover, ethanol dilated fetal cerebral arteries via cannabinoid (CB) receptors. Whether a cr…

The nerve growth factor (NGF) belongs to the family of neurotrophic factors. Initially discovered as a signaling molecule involved in the su … velopment of the fetal brain causing a wide range of neurobehavioral outcomes collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The rationale of this review is to describe crucial findings on the role of NGF in humans and animals, when exposed to prenatal, chronic alcohol consumption, and on binge drinking.

Foetal and neonatal consequences of exogenous intoxications are nowadays better apprehended especially regarding alcohol. Alcoholism during pregnancy is the cause of the syndrome of foetal alcoholism described in France by Lemoine in 1968 and then by Jones and Smith in 1973. The prevalence of the table is 1 out of 700 to 800 deliveries for the severe forms and concerns especially by not exclusively the most underprivileged sections of the population and shows in: -- a very specific dysmorphy of skull and face and other abnormalities which give to the face a singular and persistent aspect; -- v

A total of 38 embryos were delivered at abortions from women which had abused alcohol during gestation (5 to 12 weeks). Defects of cerebellar development were found in 8 cases (21%). In I case the cerebellar rudiment agenesia was noted. In 7 cases cerebellar hemispheres featured dysmorphogenic changes. Of these, in 2 the rudiments of left cerebellar hemispheres were hyperplastic and located deep in the cavity of the IVth ventricle; in the rest, extra plicate and circular formations were found in preparations with and without hyperplasia.

Prenatal alcohol exposure results in an array of developmental abnormalities known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Despite the high prevalence of FASDs, therapeutic interventions against accidental or intended exposure of developing fetuses to alcohol are limited. This review outlines current knowledge about mitochondria in cerebral blood vessels as a potential target for anti-FASDs intervention. First, it describes the multifaceted role of mitochondria in maintaining the cerebral artery diameter as shown in adult tissue. Second, current literature on alcohol-driven damage of mito…

Alcohol works on the brain to produce its desired effects, e.g., sociability and intoxication, and hence the brain is an important organ for exploring subsequent harms. These come in many different forms such as the consequences of damage during intoxication, e.g., from falls and fights, damage from withdrawal, damage from the toxicity of alcohol and its metabolites and altered brain structure and function with implications for behavioral processes such as craving and addiction. On top of that are peripheral factors that compound brain damage such as poor diet, vitamin deficiencies leading to

Objective: Determine the prevalence of Dop, a system of labor payment via alcoholic beverages, in a South African province, and its influence on maternal drinking and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Methods: Data from studies of FASD epidemiology were analyzed. Results: Forty-two percent to 67% of mothers reported drinking. In 1999, 5% of women reported Dop allocations in their lifetime: 14% of mothers of FASD children and 1% of controls. In 2010, 1.1% of mothers reported lifetime Dop: 1.6% of FASD mothers and 0.7% of controls. Commercial alcohol sales have replaced the Dop system. To…

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy constitutes a major cause of neurodevelopmental and behavioral disabilities. Whereas it is possible for clinicians to establish a perinatal diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome, the more severe expression of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), most FASD children are late or mis-diagnosed due to a lack of clear morphological and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. Several precious years of care are consequently lost. Recent data revealed a functional placenta-brain axis involved in the control of the fetal brain angiogenesis which is impaired by in utero al
