A self-expandable stent was used to obtain prolonged relief of stridor resulting from tracheal obstruction by extrinsic tumour compression despite prior external irradiation. The stent was inserted in an easy and comfortable procedure with fibreoptic bronchoscopy under local anaesthesia.

The hysteroscope is a versatile instrument which can have significant benefit in both diagnostic and therapeutic situations. Appropriate patient selection, recognition of limitations in experience and skills, and adequate instrumentation and support staff can minimize complications. As experience with the instrument and its applications grow, indications for its usage may change. It is unlikely, however, that the hysteroscope will replace other procedures completely. Over the last 10 years, 53 patients with hemoptysis, but with a normal chest radiograph underwent diagnostic fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Forty-three patients did not show any abnormal findings, the site of bleeding could be localised in five and non-specific mucosal changes were seen in the remaining five patients. The level of HCl secretion in humans correlates with the formation of granules and the organoid functional morphology in the gastrin-producing cells (GPC) of antral region of the stomach mucous membrane: HCl hypersecretion is followed by the enhancement of GPC activity, hyposecretion correlates with the inhibition of their activity. The juxtaposition of the GPC functional morphology indexes of the stomach juice acidity and blood gastrin concentration implies the necessity to reevaluate the significance of the latter as an adequate index of the GPC function.

An estimated 145,000 patients will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the United States in 1987. Although half of these cancers are potentially detectable by sigmoidoscopy, rigid sigmoidoscopy is not widely used for early detection, largely because of discomfort it causes patients. Forty-six pediatric flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopies were done on 29 infants under 1 year of age, including a 2.3-kg 1-week-old infant girl, and 17 small children between 1 and 2 years of age with persistent unilobar or multilobar atelectasis and declining PaO2 or rising PaCO2. We retrospectively examined the sensitivity and specificity of gallium lung scans for detecting Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in 22 patients with known or suspected acquired immune deficiency syndrome. A retrospective study of 60 bronchofiberscopic lavage procedures following lung surgery showed an increase of prebronchoscopy oxygen partial pressure from 64.2 mmHg (S.D. +/- 16.2) to 69.9 mmHg (S.D +/- 18.0) after bronchoscopy (P less than 0.01), while carbon dioxide partial pressure did not change significantly.
