Treatment of the mouse model of mucopolysaccharidosis I with retrovirally transduced bone marrow.

Mucopolysaccharidosis I is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the IDUA gene, resulting in deficiency of alpha-L-iduronidase … iments. But even modest activity resulted in correction of pathology of kidney, bladder epithelium, fibrocartilage, choroid plexus, and thalamus, as seen by light microscopy, while electron microscopy showed the presence of some normal neurons in the cortex. The partial correction of brain pathology is attributed to migration of donor hematopoietic cells, demons …

Arthroscopic capsulodesis of the lunotriquetral joint.

A case series consisting of 20 consecutive patients with persistent ulnar-sided mechanical wrist pain, lunotriquetral interosseous (LTIOL) ligament tears resulting in joint incongruity and increased laxity, and traumatic triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tears was reviewed. Each patient underwent an arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) of the lunotriquetral joint, arthroscopic disk-carpal (disklunate-ulnocapitate-disktriquetral, DL-UC-DT) ligament plication, and TFCC repair or débridement. There were 12 right wrists and 8 left wrists, of which 12 were dominant. The mean p…

[The value of wrist joint arthroscopy in injuries].

UNLABELLED: Wrist arthroscopy clearly shows lesions of carpal bone cartilages, the triangular fibrocartilage (TFC), and of carpal ligaments. Between October, 1993, and August, 1994, 37 out of 47 wrist arthroscopies were performed in the consequence of trauma. The indication was on one hand a joint check for planning further surgery, on the other hand a profound suspicion of a severe intraarticular damage, which was raised in a standardized clinical examination with localizing any points of tenderness, testing for carpal instability, and provoking carpal subluxations and pathological clicks. Th…

[Load transmission through the wrist joint: a biomechanical study comparing the normal and pathological wrist].

This study was undertaken to elucidate the correlation, if any, between pressure loading and the progress of degenerative osteoarthritis in the human wrist. Nine fresh amputated forearms were used to produce i) a pathological model of a malunion after a distal radius fracture, ii) a model of a triangular fibrocartilage (TFC) tear, and iii) a model of a scapholunate dissociated wrist (involving three specimens for each model). On pressure loading, changes in the radioulno-carpal joint and in the midcarpal joint were measured using a pressure sensor. In the malunion of the distal radial end, we …

Type VI collagen in mouse masseter tendon, from osseous attachment to myotendinous junction.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The association of masseter tendon type VI collagen with other extracellular matrix (ECM) components was examined fr … collagen fibrils. In the tendon-bone boundary, ATP-aggregated periodic fibrils were observed around fibrocartilage-like cells in the uncalcifying area but not in the calcification front. Prolonged ATP treatment or hyaluronidase predigestion caused the formation of type VI collagen periodic fibrils in the area near the calcified matrix. CONCLUSIONS: The distribu …

Subchondral bone drilling: a treatment for cartilage defects.

Clearly, no one surgical procedure is ideal for the treatment of degenerative joint disease. Many factors are involved in planning for the p … logy of the disease process. It has been shown that small drill holes may be effective in producing fibrocartilage to replace full- and partial-thickness cartilage defects (14, 18). Such drilling has been useful in the treatment of osteochondral lesions of the ankle and promises to be equally effective in treatment of osteochondral lesions of the metatarsophalan …

20-Year outcome of TFCC repairs.

The aims of this study were to investigate the functional result and rate of osteoarthritis 15-25 years after a TFCC-repair. Forty-seven patients completed the questionnaire Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), and 43 had new X-rays. Fifty-seven percent had a simultaneous arthroscopy. Sixteen patients had later additional surgery to the wrist, of these eight had a reoperation of the TFCC-injury due to recurrent instability. Radiographs showed that 17.5% had developed radiocarpal osteoarthritis and 34% osteoarthritis in the distal radioulnar joint. The median PRWE result was 22.5. Patients wi

Clinical tests and magnetic resonance imaging have limited diagnostic value for triangular fibrocartilaginous complex lesions.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic value of clinical tests and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for the investigation of triangular fibrocartilaginous complex (TFCC) lesions is not clear due to a lack of clinical data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 908 patients who underwent clinical tests and arthroscopy for suspected TFCC lesions at our institution. Further, MR imaging findings concerning the TFCC were gathered. We correlated clinical tests and MR imaging findings with those obtained during arthroscopy, and we calculated sensitivity, specificity, as well as positive and negati

Biomechanical stability of an arthroscopic anterior capsular shift and suture anchor repair in anterior shoulder instability: a human cadaveric shoulder model.

It was hypothesized that an arthroscopic Bankart repair with suture anchors supplies sufficient anterior shoulder stability, which cannot be improved by an additional capsular shift. In an experimental biomechanical human cadaver study, we tested ten fresh human cadaver shoulders in a robot-assisted shoulder simulator. External rotation and glenohumeral translation were measured at 0 degrees and 80 degrees of glenohumeral abduction. All measurements were performed under the following conditions: on the non-operated shoulder; following the setting of three arthroscopic portals; following an art
