The various roles of TREM2 in cardiovascular disease.

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-2 (TREM2) is a transmembrane immune receptor that is expressed mainly on macrophages. As a pathology-induced immune signaling hub, TREM2 senses tissue damage and activates immune remodeling in response. Previous studies have predominantly focused on the TREM2 signaling pathway in Alzheimer's disease, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. Recent research has indicated that TREM2 signaling is also activated in various cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we summarize the current understanding and the unanswered questions regarding the role of TREM2 si

Simultaneous Sulfite Electrolysis and Hydrogen Production Using Ni Foam-Based Three-Dimensional Electrodes.

The electrochemical oxidation of sulfite ions offers encouraging advantages for large-scale hydrogen production, while sulfur dioxide emissions can be effectively used to obtain value-added byproducts. Herein, the performance and stability during sulfite electrolysis under alkaline conditions are evaluated. Nickel foam (NF) substrates were functionalized as the anode and cathode through electrochemical deposition of palladium and chemical oxidation to carry out the sulfite electro-oxidation and hydrogen evolution reactions, respectively. A combined analytical approach in which a robust electro

Mechanisms for increased cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney dysfunction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have the highest risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Current interventions have been insufficiently effective in lessening excess incidence and mortality from CVD in patients with CKD versus other high-risk groups. This review focuses on traditional and CKD-related risks as well as key mechanisms of macrophage foam cell formation that underlie the excess CVD in the setting of CKD. RECENT FINDINGS: Hyperlipidemia, particularly increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, is the key factor in atherogenesis

Effect of temperature and pressure on surface tension of polystyrene in supercritical carbon dioxide.

The surface tension of polymers in a supercritical fluid is one of the most important physicochemical parameters in many engineering processes, such as microcellular foaming where the surface tension between a polymer melt and a fluid is a principal factor in determining cell nucleation and growth. This paper presents experimental results of the surface tension of polystyrene in supercritical carbon dioxide, together with theoretical calculations for a corresponding system. The surface tension is determined by Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis-Profile (ADSA-P), where a high pressure and tempera

Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Plasticity in Atherosclerosis: Mechanisms, Recent Advances, and Therapeutic Implications.

Atherosclerosis, the fundamental pathological basis of most cardiovascular diseases which remain the leading cause of global mortality, is driven by both lipid accumulation and dynamic cellular reprogramming within the vessel wall. Central to this process is the remarkable phenotypic plasticity of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Far from being terminally differentiated, VSMCs undergo profound transitions from a contractile state to diverse states, including synthetic, macrophage-like, foam cell-like, and fibroblast-like states, which critically influence plaque formation, stability, and

Lighting up Ferroptosis Propagating via the Lung-Heart Axis Exacerbates Cardiovascular Disease Through in Situ Imaging.

Cigarette smoke (CS)-induced lung injury is a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs), with both diseases sharing a common pathogenesis that encompasses ferroptosis. Studies have shown that ferroptosis can propagate in a wave-like manner across cell populations; however, whether and how this propagation participates in the cross-organ communication between lung injury and ASCVDs remains unknown. Here we developed two near-infrared fluorescent probes, Cy-F-1 and Cy-F-2, with lung-targeting and plaque-targeting properties, respectively. Utilizing in vivo molecular fluore

Reconstructive Challenges in Recurrent Nasal Basal Cell Carcinoma: Multidisciplinary Management and Paramedian Forehead Flap Reconstruction in an Elderly Patient.

Basal cell carcinoma involving the nose may require extensive surgical excision, resulting in complex defects that present both functional and aesthetic reconstructive challenges, particularly in patients with recurrent disease or previous radiotherapy. We report the case of a 73-year-old woman with a history of recurrent basal cell carcinoma, including prior facial radiotherapy, who presented with a biopsy-proven lesion on the nasal dorsum. Following multidisciplinary evaluation, she underwent wide local excision with histopathological assessment, resulting in a 2 × 2 cm nasal dorsum defect w

Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Decreases the Expression of Adenosine A2A Receptor and Lipid Rafts-Protein Flotillin-1: Insights on Cardiovascular Risk of Hypercholesterolemia.

High blood levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (LDL-C) are associated with atherosclerosis, mainly by promoting foam cell accumulation in vessels. As cholesterol is an essential component of cell plasma membranes and a regulator of several signaling pathways, LDL-C excess may have wider cardiovascular toxicity. We examined, in untreated hypercholesterolemia (HC) patients, selected regardless of the cause of LDL-C accumulation, and in healthy participants (HP), the expression of the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR), an anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory protein with cholesterol-dep

Distinctive Performance of Gemini Surfactant in the Preparation of Hierarchically Porous Carbons via High-Internal-Phase Emulsion Template.

The superior capability of gemini surfactant (GS) in the preparation of hierarchically porous carbons via high-internal-phase emulsion (HIPE) template followed by pyrolysis was confirmed in this work. Polymerized HIPEs (polyHIPEs) of phenol-formaldehyde resin were prepared by cross-linking the continuous phase of HIPEs stabilized by GS. Nonionic surfactant and cationic surfactant were also selected to stabilize HIPE for comparison. From scanning electron microscope observations, polyHIPEs with open-cell pore architectures were obtained with GS as emulsifier (polyHIPEs-GS) and the derived carbo

Ovaries of estrogen receptor 1-deficient mice show iron overload and signs of aging.

INTRODUCTION: Estrogens are crucial regulators of ovarian function, mediating their signaling through binding to estrogen receptors. The disruption of the estrogen receptor 1 (Esr1) provokes infertility associated with a hemorrhagic, cystic phenotype similar to that seen in diseased or aged ovaries. Our previous study indicated the possibility of altered iron metabolism in Esr1-deficient ovaries showing massive expression of lipocalin 2, a regulator of iron homeostasis. METHODS: Therefore, we examined the consequences of depleting Esr1 in mouse ovaries, focusing on iron metabolism. For that r

Annexin A5 prevents post-interventional accelerated atherosclerosis development in a dose-dependent fashion in mice.

BACKGROUND: Activated cells in atherosclerotic lesions expose phosphatidylserine (PS) on their surface. Annexin A5 (AnxA5) binds to PS and is used for imaging atherosclerotic lesions. Recently, AnxA5 was shown to inhibit vascular inflammatory processes after vein grafting. Here, we report a therapeutic role for AnxA5 in post-interventional vascular remodeling in a mouse model mimicking percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS AND RESULTS: Associations between the rs4833229 (OR = 1.29 (CI 95%), p(allelic) = 0.011) and rs6830321 (OR = 1.35 (CI 95%), p(allelic) = 0.003) SNPs in the AnxA

Computer simulation and experimental analysis of LDL transport in the arteries.

Atherosclerosis develops from oxidized low-density lipoprotein molecules (LDL). When oxidized LDL evolves in plaque formations within an artery wall, a series of reactions occur to repair the damage to the artery wall caused by oxidized LDL. Macrophages accumulate inside arterial intima, they started to collect oxidized LDL and form foam cells. Smooth muscle cells accumulate in the atherosclerotic arterial intima, where they proliferate and secrete extracellular matrix to form a fibrous cap. In this study, experimental model of LDL transport on the isolated blood vessel from rabbit on high fat…

Effect of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ on the cholesterol efflux of peritoneal macrophages in inflammation.

Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by lipid and cholesterol accumulation, is the principal contributing factor to the pathology of cardiovascular disease. Macrophages contribute to plaque development by internalizing native and modified lipoproteins that convert them into cholesterol-rich foam cells. With multiple factors, including hypercholesterolemia and inflammation, promoting atherosclerosis, it is of great significance to elucidate how the mechanism of cholesterol efflux from the macrophages changes and the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ …
