PURPOSE: The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) presents commonly with avulsion fractures of its tibial attachment. An avulsion fracture of the PCL, if not surgically fixed, may lead to secondary changes in the knee joint. Various fixation techniques have been explored with use of lag screws, steel wires, absorbable screws, suture anchors and straddle nails. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and functional outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of tibial avulsion injuries of the PCL using cannulated cancellous screws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed open reduc

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid fracture is the most common among carpal bone fractures, frequently imperceptible on initial radiographs. Tendency of scaphoid fracture to undergo in non-union makes it an important challenging injury for all orthopaedic surgeons. Displaced scaphoid fracture has high non-union rate in conservative management asserting the need to explore operative treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: A prospective study was conducted in our institution in thirty patients in 20 to 50 year age group, for displaced scaphoid fracture (<30 days duration). Patient were followed up at every 4 week i

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic double-row suture-anchor fixation and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are used to treat displaced greater tuberosity fractures, but there are few data that can help guide the surgeon in choosing between these approaches.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore asked: (1) Is there a difference in surgical time between arthroscopic double-row suture anchor fixation and ORIF for isolated displaced greater tuberosity fractures? (2) Are there differences in the postoperative ROM and functional scores between arthroscopic double-row suture anchor fixation and ORIF for

BACKGROUND: Tibial plateau fractures account for approximately 1% of all fractures. They usually occur after a direct high-energy trauma. Despite adequate treatment, these fractures can result in malalignment and secondary osteoarthritis (OA). Research concerning long-term functional outcome is limited. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate mid- to long-term functional outcome of surgically treated tibial plateau fractures. The secondary aim was to investigate whether radiological characteristics of OA one year after surgery are predictive of functional outcome at follow-up.

This is a review of six cases of complex intercondylar fractures of the humerus in adolescents, treated operatively through a transolecranon approach. Outcome was assessed by means of the Mayo Elbow score, the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score, and the Oxford Elbow score. All patients reported 'good' to 'excellent' results. One patient required revision surgery because of fracture nonunion, and all patients underwent removal of hardware from the olecranon after osteotomy union. The transolecranon approach is effective in visualization of complex intercondylar fractures, and good o

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Distal humerus fractures in the elderly frequently associated with poor bone quality and comminution, making it harder to achieve proper osteosynthesis. Our aim is to evaluate the radiological and functional results of open reduction and internal fixation of these fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 26 patients treated by open reduction and internal fixation between the years 2005-2010. Mean follow-up was 42 months. At final follow-up, a radiography evaluation (Knirk and Jupiter score) and clinical examination using Mayo Elbow Performance Score

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review of adult patients who sustained C1 lateral mass sagittal split fractures treated with primary internal fixation.
OBJECTIVE: To present the outcomes of patients treated with primary C1 open reduction and internal fixation of this previously described injury.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The majority of C1 fractures can be effectively treated nonoperatively with external immobilization unless there is an injury to the transverse atlantal ligament. We have previously described an uncommon fracture variant involving a unilateral sagittal split of the C1 lat

Failure of internal fixation of trochanteric fractures requires repeat surgery in order to avoid the risks of complications affecting bedridden patients. This study was conducted to assess the results of hemi- or total hip arthroplasty with a cementless modular femoral stem, as a salvage operation following early mechanical failure of internal fixation. Twenty nine patients with a mean age of 81.1 years (70-91) were included in the study. Fractures extending into the diaphysis and pathological fractures were excluded, as well as patients who presented late complications. A cementless modular s

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between muscle strength recovery and functional outcome in patients who were treated for an acetabular fracture via an anterior approach.
DESIGN: Case series.
SETTING: University Medical Center.
PATIENTS: Fifteen patients with a displaced acetabular fracture treated via an anterior, ilioinguinal approach were studied. Hip muscle strength of these patients was then compared with the muscle strength of a similar group of patients treated via a Kocher-Langenbeck approach (posterior approach). These patient groups were then combined and muscle strength r

We studied 60 patients with an acute displaced fracture of the femoral neck and with a mean age of 84 years. They were randomly allocated to treatment by either internal fixation with cannulated screws or hemiarthroplasty using an uncemented Austin Moore prosthesis. All patients had severe cognitive impairment, but all were able to walk independently before the fracture. They were reviewed at four, 12 and 24 months after surgery. Outcome assessments included complications, revision surgery, the status of activities of daily living (ADL), hip function according to the Charnley score and the hea

We report a patient who had bilateral stress fractures of proximal tibial shaft secondary to advanced osteoarthritis of knee with varus deformity. With treatment by simultaneous correction of deformity and internal fixation, the fractures healed uneventfully and the chronic knee pain was much alleviated. Due to progression of the symptom, right total knee replacement was finally performed 9 years later. Her left knee still did well after 13-year follow-up.
