INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The oral cavity harbours a complex microbial ecosystem that plays a critical role in periodontal health and disease. Despite growing concerns over antimicrobial resistance (AMR), long-term surveillance of antibiotic susceptibility in oral bacteria remains limited. This study aimed to assess the temporal trends in AMR among oral bacteria isolated from periodontitis patients in Taiwan over a 14-year period, with emphasis on genus-specific, Gram-specific, and sex-related patterns.
METHODS: A total of 980 bacterial isolates were obtained from 466 periodontitis patients betw

Oral cancer is a globally widespread cancer that features among the three most prevalent cancers in India. The risk of oral cancer is elevated by factors such as tobacco consumption, betel-quid chewing, excessive alcohol consumption, unhygienic oral condition, sustained viral infections, and also due to dysbiosis in microbiome composition of the oral cavity. Here, we performed an oral microbiome study of healthy and oral cancer patients to decipher the microbial dysbiosis due to the consumption of smokeless-tobacco-based products and also revealed the tobacco-associated microbiome. The analysi

Halitosis (bad breath) is estimated to influence more than half of the world's population with varying degree of intensity. More than 85% of halitosis originates from oral bacterial infections. Foul-smelling breath mainly results from bacterial production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. To date, major treatments for elimination of oral malodor include periodontal therapy combined with antibiotics or antimicrobial agents, and mechanical approaches including tooth and tongue cleaning. These treatments may transiently reduce VSCs but carry risks

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial agents provide valuable adjunctive therapy for the prevention and the control of oral diseases. Limitations in their prolonged use have stimulated the search for new, naturally occurring agents with more specific activity and fewer adverse effects. Here we sought to determine the antibacterial properties of blackberry extract (BBE) in vitro against oral bacterial commensals and periodontopathogens.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effects of whole and fractionated BBE on the metabolism of 10 different oral bacteria were evaluated using the colorimetric water-s

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP) is a painful and potentially debilitating affliction that affects about 2% to 6% of HIV-positive subjects. NUP may be caused by specific microorganisms that are presently unknown or by microbial species not usually thought to cause periodontal infections. The purpose of this study was to define the bacterial species associated with NUP in HIV-positive patients.
METHODS: 16S rRNA bacterial genes of DNA isolated from subgingival plaque of 8 HIV-positive subjects with NUP were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into Esch

The present study reports our experience with stereotactic puncture, aspiration and drainage of brain abscesses in 24 patients from a series of 34 consecutive cases. In all patients an intracavitary catheter was left in place for external drainage and daily irrigation with antibiotics. The patients received pre- and postoperatively triple broad spectrum antibiotic treatment, associated with low dose steroids and anti-epileptic drugs. Follow-up CT scans showed immediate reduction of the abscess size and gradual diameter diminution of the enhancing ring structure until its disappearance. The cli

BACKGROUND: Cat bite infections are common emergency settings and are characterized by small, deep puncture wounds that readily form an anaerobic microenvironment, leading to a high incidence of anaerobic bacterial infections. Conventional aerobic bacterial culture has extremely low detection efficiency for such infections and is prone to false-negative results and delayed treatment. As a designated regional rabies vaccination and treatment center, our hospital manages refractory and severe animal bite cases referred from primary medical institutions, with an annual volume of approximately 300

AIM AND BACKGROUND: The oral cavity harbors a diverse microbiota that significantly influences oral health and disease. Conventional microbiological techniques have limitations in detecting the full range of microbial species, particularly those that are uncultivable. Metagenomics, through culture-independent, high-throughput sequencing methods, offers a comprehensive approach to studying oral microbial diversity. This narrative review aims to evaluate the role of metagenomics in exploring the oral microbiome and its association with dental diseases.
METHODS: This review systematically synthe

Background and aim Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCCs) are transient lesions characterized by restricted diffusion on MRI and are associated with various infectious and noninfectious conditions. However, the clinical spectrum of infection-related CLOCCs, particularly those associated with bacterial infections, remains incompletely defined. This study aimed to describe the clinical, etiological, and neuroimaging characteristics of CLOCCs diagnosed at a single center, encompassing both infectious and noninfectious etiologies, with particular attention to infection-related cases. Oral bacteria possess the ability to form biofilms on solid surfaces. After the penetration of oral bacteria into the pulp, the contact between biofilms and pulp tissue may result in pulpitis, pulp necrosis and/or periapical lesion. Depending on the environmental conditions and the availability of nutrients in the pulp chamber and root canals, mainly Gram-negative anaerobic microorganisms predominate and form the intracanal endodontic biofilm. The objective of the present study was to investigate the role of different substrates on biofilm formation as well as the separate and collective incor

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum, a well studied bacterium in periodontal diseases, appendicitis, gingivitis, osteomyelitis and pregnancy complications has recently gained attention due to its association with colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. Treatment with berberine was shown to reverse F. nucleatum-induced CRC progression in mice by balancing the growth of opportunistic pathogens in tumor microenvironment. Intestinal microbiota imbalance and the infections caused by F. nucleatum might be regulated by therapeutic intervention. Hence, we aimed to predict drug target proteins in F. nucle

This is a case report of Lemierre's syndrome, a septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) usually preceded by pharyngitis and bacteraemia with an anaerobic organism. Fusobacterium necrophorum is ananaerobic Gram-negative bacillus and is the most common organism reported to cause Lemierre's syndrome which usually occurs one to three weeks post pharyngitis or oropharyngeal surgery. A 21-year-old patient presented with signs of sepsis and a history of sore throat, fever, and tender cervical lymph nodes. Blood cultures grew F. necrophorum and Computed Tomography (CT) showed a fill

Although extensive efforts have been made to explore effective antibiotics, the development of antibiotics lags far behind the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Antimicrobial materials as an alternative strategy provide effective functions in aiding in relieving the dose of antibiotics. Herein, we report a novel antibacterial agent with high antibacterial effectivity and low toxicity, which is simply composed of a trace amount of Cu2+ ion and nanoscale biocompatible polymer poly (acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid) (PAI-Cu). The polymer shows greatly enhanced antibacterial activity against vari

Rat bite fever is an under-reported, under-diagnosed emerging zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Besides Spirillum minus, Streptobacillus moniliformis is the major causative microorganism although it usually colonises rats without any clinical signs. A group of house rats (Rattus rattus) kept in a zoo exhibition for educational purposes suffered from neurological signs including disorientation, torticollis, stall walking, ataxia and death. Gross pathological and histo-pathological examinations of the investigated rats revealed high-grade otitis interna et media, from which Streptobacillus n

The antimicrobial agent nitric oxide (NO) is formed in the mouth and its concentration is directly related to salivary nitrite, which in turn is related to dietary nitrate intake. The aim of this study was to determine whether nitrite under acidic conditions will have an inhibitory effect, possibly occurring through NO production, on the periodontal disease pathogens Fusobacterium nucleatum, Eikenella corrodens and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Whereas the growth of these organisms was inhibited by a more acid pH, the addition of nitrite caused a marked, further dose-dependent reduction in bacteri
