BACKGROUND: Carbon disulfide (CS(2)) is a commonly used organic solvent. Many epidemiological investigations and animal experiments have indicated that learning and memory ability can be affected to different degrees after long-term exposure to CS(2), but the mechanisms are still unclear. Spermidine/spermine-N(1)-acetyltransferase (SSAT) regulates cellular polyamine content. Its acetylated products are either excreted from the cell or oxidized by acetylpolyamine oxidase. Lysozymes are key proteins of the innate immune system against bacterial infections. In this study we report the molecular cloning and characterization of the c-type and g-type lysozymes in brill (Scophthalmus rhombus). Catalytic and other conserved residues required for functionality were identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed distinct evolutionary histories for each lysozyme type. UNLABELLED: Past studies of uterine prostaglandin (PGs) and pig reproduction have focused on endometrial rather than myometrial PGs. This study documents the synthesis and secretion of myometrial prostaglandins (PGs) in pigs and the involvement of oxytocin (OT) in these processes. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression was similar in myometrial explants from cyclic and pregnant pigs (days 14-16) and OT (10(-7) M) in vitro significantly increased COX-2 protein regardless of reproductive state. Basal expression of prostaglandin E2 synthase (PGES) was higher during pregnancy than during luteolysis.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rad30 is the homolog of human DNA polymerase eta whose inactivation leads to the cancer-prone syndrome xeroderma pigmentosum variant. Both human and yeast polymerase eta are responsible for error-free bypass of UV-induced cis-syn pyrimidine dimers and several other DNA lesions. In this study we have investigated a group of 29 Brazilian patients, who had been diagnosed with the lysosomal storage disorder, Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS-I). The expression of mRNAs coding for tryptophan hydroxylase (TPOH), the first enzyme involved in melatonin synthesis, has been studied in the rat adult pineal gland at four different circadian time points by in-situ hybridization using an oligonucleotide probe.
