Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) make TB difficult to control. Global susceptibility data for six newly recommended anti-TB drugs against M/XDR-TB are still limited. Using publicly available whole-genome sequences, we determined the proportion of 513 phenotypically XDR-TB isolates that carried mutations associated with resistance against these drugs (bedaquiline, clofazimine, linezolid, delamanid, pretomanid and cycloserine). Mutations of Rv0678 and Rv1979c were detected in 69/513 isolates (13.5%) for bedaquiline resistance and 79/5

To tackle the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance programmes are in place within Europe applying phenotypic methods, but there are plans for implementing whole genome sequencing (WGS). We tested the benefits of WGS using Escherichia coli collected from pig surveillance performed between 2013 to 2017. WGS was performed on 498 E. coli producing ESBL and AmpC enzymes, recovered from pig caeca on MacConkey + cefotaxime (McC + CTX) agar, as recommended by the European Commission, or ESBL agar, used additionally by United Kingdom. Our results indicated WGS was extremely useful for

OBJECTIVES: Klebsiella pneumoniae colonisation of the human gastrointestinal tract is a significant risk factor for extraintestinal infections in severely ill patients. Recent reports have indicated the high rate of K. pneumoniae infection resulting from the patient's own gut microbiota. Here we report the draft genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant (MDR) K. pneumoniae strain (SM32) harbouring the blaAIM-1 gene isolated from a patient with chronic diarrhoea in China.
METHODS: Whole genomic DNA was sequenced using an Illumina MiSeq platform. The generated reads were de novo assembled using

The dissemination of Multi Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs) is one of the major public health problems addressed nowadays. High fecal carriage rates of MDR Enterobacteriaceae were reported from Lebanese nursing homes. Studies have shown that the acquisition of resistance genes by bacteria might confer a fitness cost detected as a decrease in the frequency of these bacteria as compared to sensitive isolates. In this study, the competitive growth of MDR Enterobacteriaceae isolated from elderly is assessed. Sensitive and ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were iden

Tuberculosis (TB) is a growing international health concern, since it is the leading infectious cause of death in the world today. In particular, the increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB has greatly contributed to the increased difficulties in the control of TB. Because of the global health problems of TB, the increasing rate of MDR-TB and the high rate of a co-infection with HIV, the development of potent new anti-TB drugs without cross-resistance with known antimycobacterial agents is urgently needed. This article deals with the following areas. First, it briefly reviews som

Shigellosis, a bacterial infection marked by dysentery, is typically a self-limiting disease and can be effectively managed with oral rehydration. However, antibiotics may help reduce the severity and duration of Shigellosis despite rising antimicrobial resistance. This study examines the prevalence of ESBL-producing isolates and the presence of blaTEM, blaCTX-M, blaSHV, intI1, and intI2 genes among Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri isolates from children with diarrhea in Shiraz, southwest Iran. From October 2019 to March 2020, 50 S. flexneri and 50 S. sonnei were isolated from children un

The causative agent of typhoid fever, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, is a human restricted pathogen. Human carriers, 90% of whom have gallstones in their gallbladder, continue to shed the pathogen after treatment. The genetic mechanisms involved in establishing the carrier state are poorly understood, but S. Typhi is thought to undergo specific genetic changes within the gallbladder as an adaptive mechanism. In the current study, we aimed to identify biofilm forming ability and the genetic differences in longitudinal clinical S. Typhi isolates from asymptomatic carriers with gallstones in

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) and Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS) transporters have been known to play an important role in the development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in various fungal species. While the importance of ABC transporters in MDR development is widely understood, MFS exporters have gotten little attention. The role of QDR (quinidine drug resistance) transporters (CaQDR1, CaQDR2, and CaQDR3), a subfamily of MFS, in conferring pathogenicity and virulence to Candida albicans is highlighted in this study. The transcriptome analysis of QDR knockout (QDRKO) strains versus wild-type (
