OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth (PTB) remains a cause of substantial morbidity with an elusive etiology. Previous studies suggested an association of PTB with elevated serum levels of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) at 28 weeks gestation. G-CSF, a hematopoietic cytokine, mediates the increase in leukocytes in pregnancy and may play a role in placentation. We evaluated the association between maternal serum G-CSF in the first and second trimesters and PTB.
METHODS: Serum samples collected for the Collaborative Perinatal Project (CPP) from women with normal pregnancy (n = 394) and PTB (n

The impact of bacterial colonization on the severity and pattern of chronic inflammation in rhinosinusitis is not clear. In this study, it was hypothesized that bacterial colonization of the sinus mucosa would have a greater impact on inflammatory response modulation in asthmatic patients than in non-asthmatic patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. In order to test this hypothesis, granulocyte activation was measured and related to bacteria identified in the sinus lavage. Lavages from the maxillary sinuses of 21 asthmatic and 19 non-asthmatic patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) were micr

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor associated with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and it is rarely seen in the female genital tract. We report an unusual case of granulocytic sarcoma of the uterus and fallopian tube in an AML patient who presented with vaginal bleeding and persistent abdominal pain. She was under chemotherapy. Biopsy did not reveal the diagnosis. After laparoscopic examination, hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. Pathology showed atypical myeloid cells infiltrating the muscle bundles which was consistent with granulocytic sarcoma inv

BACKGROUND/AIM: Controversial experimental observations suggest that granulocyte colony stimulating-factor may promote hepatic regeneration after hepatectomy and chemical injury either by directly stimulating adult liver cells or facilitating the mobilization of bone marrow cells and their homing to the liver. We investigated whether different schedules of granulocyte colony stimulating-factor administration protect against experimental acute liver injury.
METHODS: Acute liver injury was induced in Sprague-Dawley fed rats by injecting a single intraperitoneal dose of carbon tetrachloride. Rec

Stroke is one of the leading causes of unnatural death and disability. No effective therapy is available. Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF), as a mobilizing agent for bone marrow stem cells, can promote stem cell mobilization, homing to brain after cerebral ischemia. In the present study, the administration of G-CSF significantly increased number of CD34(+) cells in the marginal zone of the infarction. Rats receiving G-CSF had higher survival rate and lower infarction volume. Neurological behavior was improved, and the expression of fibronectin in the ischemic b

INTRODUCTION: In this retrospective, uncontrolled, observational study, the effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-stimulated granulocyte transfusions (GTX) in neutropenic paediatric patients with sepsis was evaluated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Granulocytes were collected from unrelated, ABO group-matched and cytomegalic-antibody compatible donors. For neutrophil mobilization, donors received a single subcutaneous dose of glycosylated G-CSF (Lenograstim, Chugai Pharma, Japan) plus oral dexamethasone (8 mg). In total, 168 (range 1-19 per patient) GTX were transfused in 32 children…

Five hundred and forty-five serum samples from donors from various parts of Mongolia were investigated for antibodies against the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Seroprevalence against TBE was 5.1% in the province of Selenge and 0.9% in Bulgan province, seroprevalence against B. burgdorferi was 1.9% in Selenge province and Bulgan province, 13.9% in Dornogov province, and 3.0% in Tov province and Ulaanbaatar. Seroprevalence against A. phagocytophilum was 2.3% in Selenge province, 5.6% in Bulgan province, 2.8% in Dornogov province, and 3.

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) induces arteriogenic growth of collateral vessels after occlusion of cardiac or peripheral arteries. Recently, evidence has been provided that arteriogenesis also occurs in the brain under conditions of reduced arterial blood supply. Hemispheric hypoperfusion induced by unilateral carotid and bilateral vertebral artery occlusion (three-vessel occlusion, [3-VO]) led to the growth of the anterior and posterior segments of the circle of Willis, which is the main collateral pathway between the origins of the anterior, middle and posterior c

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a neuroprotective agent and activates endothelial proliferation and bone marrow stem cell mobilization. We studied the effect of G-CSF on angiogenesis and neurological recovery after focal cerebral ischemia. After the induction of transient focal ischemia in rats, G-CSF (50 micro/day, i.p.) or PBS was administered for 3 days. We evaluated the functional recovery, infarct volume, inflammatory infiltration, blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, hemispheric atrophy, protein expressions of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and angiopoietins,

The non-specific acute phase response in mice is associated with increased resistance to bacterial infection, which is critically mediated by granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), but the behaviour of G-CSF in the human acute phase response is not known. Cardiothoracic surgery is a powerful acute phase stimulus and we show here that this procedure caused increased production of G-CSF, in addition to increases in the circulating concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 and the acute phase plasma proteins C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A protein (SAA

We report a case of toxic epidermal necrolysis who was successfully treated with intravenous immunoglobin and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. He had poor prognostic factors such as extensive epidermal loss, neutropenia, acute respiratory distress syndrome and candida sepsis, but nonetheless made a complete recovery.

: Chronic neutropenia is common in children with cartilage-hair hypoplasia (CHH). The authors describe a 6-year-old with severe CHH, moderate neutropenia associated with serum IgG antibodies directed against Fcgamma-RIIIb (NA1/2), and frequent bacterial infections. In this patient, long-term administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor increased peripheral neutrophil counts and prevented recurrent hospitalizations for bacterial lower respiratory tract infections.

Lyme disease, human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) and babesiosis are emerging infections in the northeastern and midwestern United States, where Ixodes scapularis ticks are prevalent. Lyme disease and babesiosis have also been reported on the West Coast, but less frequently. Lyme disease presents frequently with a skin lesion known as erythema migrans (EM), and diagnostic tests are not necessary if the lesion is classical. Those patients presenting without EM or with atypical skin lesions may need laboratory confirmation. The most frequently used laboratory modality consists of the 2-step se

Melioidosis, caused by the intracellular pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic in northern Australia and Southeast Asia. Risk factors for this infection have also been associated with functional neutrophil defects. Because of this, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was adopted for use in patients with septic shock due to melioidosis in December 1998. We compared the mortality rates from before and after the introduction of G-CSF therapy at the Royal Darwin Hospital (Darwin, Australia) during the period of 1989-2002. The mortality rate decreased from 95% to 10% after the in

Isolated chloromas (granulocytic sarcomas) are rare tumors. Chloromas are masses composed of immature granulocytic cells. Granulocytic sarcoma occurs primarily in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia and may also arise in patients with other myeloproliferative disorders, but rarely in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). When dural-based, granulocytic sarcoma may be indistinguishable from meningioma radiologically. We now describe one patient affected by ALL with isolated granulocytic sarcoma mimicking a falx meningioma as initial CNS relapses. These unusual clinical manifesta

Primary granulocytic sarcoma is a rare disorder that presents as an extramedullary myeloid cell tumour. In this case, we describe a 35-year-old woman who developed widely disseminated granulocytic sarcomas three months after she received local radiotherapy to a primary granulocytic sarcoma of the cervical spine. These disseminated sarcomas initially responded to combination chemotherapy but this approach was only partly successful as the woman was left with increasing residual disease in the mediastinum. She was then treated with an allogeneic peripheral blood stem-cell transplant that led to
