Experimental thyrotoxicosis was produced in guinea pigs by daily intraperitoneal injection of 0.7 mg/kg thyroxine (T4) or 0.15 mg/kg triiodothyronine (T3), as shown by an increase of PBI over 50 gamma percent, weight reduction of 20--30 percent, and increase in heart rate of 30--50 percent. The prevalence of protozoan and helminth parasites of the intestinal tract in a Papua New Guinea island with a population of 16,800 was assessed by surveys of a series of randomly selected villages. There were significant differences in the severity of infection with these parasites between the two linguistic groups inhabiting the eastern and western halves of the island. Blood examinations for malaria and microfilariae also differed. It is thought that these differences reflect obscure microenvironmental factors in what would appear to be an epidemiologically homogeneous population.

Guinea-pigs kept on a diet deficient in vitamin C showed, after 3 weeks, a marked decrease of ascorbic acid in brain and blood leucocytes as well as of the activity of alkaline phosphatase in blood plasma. The protein concentration in the perilymph of noise-exposed guinea pigs was investigated using a micromethod described previously. The animals were exposed to wide band noise at 140 dB for one hour unilaterally in a closed acoustic system. A 24-h neutralization test that is based on fluorescent cell counting was used for the detection and quantitative determination of serum-neutralizing antibody against lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. The earliest manifestation of serum-neutralizing antibody in guinea pigs was shown to occur within 1 week after inoculation with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. Within 11 weeks, serum-neutralizing antibody increased from 20- to 300-fold. The hypersensitivity reactions of several synthetic dextran-polypeptides have been studied in guinea-pigs. Insulin, oxidized insulin peptide B and their dextran derivatives were found to cross-react. An enzyme is present in extracts of guinea pig polymorphonuclear leukocytes which can catalyze the hydrolysis of pyridine nucleotides. The enzyme is equally active toward nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) or NAD phosphate, has an acid pH optimum, and is inhibited by either nicotinamide or isonicotinic acid hydrazide. This enzyme might be involved in the regulation of the pyridine nucleotide concentration within the leukocyte.
