Native Hawaiians have high cancer incidence and mortality rates, thus would benefit from timely cancer screening and opportunities to participate in cancer prevention clinical trials. Kauai physicians and District Health Office staff established a computerized tracking system in 1993 to improve immunization rates in Kauai-born infants. Comparison of 1995 and 1996 audit results of 1993- and 1994-born children showed completion rates for 9 antigens rose from 76% to 86%. Evolution and improvement of the tracking system are discussed. Recommendations for physicians are offered.

Using 1980 Census data, we examined the household and nonhousehold living arrangements for older, unmarried women of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Korean descent, finding substantial variation across ethnic groups. We tested three hypotheses regarding the effects of acculturation, economic status, and nativity/immigration status. The purpose of this study was to assess induction rates, maternal, and neonatal outcomes following adoption of a policy prohibiting elective inductions at less than 39 weeks gestation and inductions between 39 and 41 weeks with an unfavorable cervix. A retrospective cohort study of all deliveries greater than or equal to 37 weeks gestation was conducted 1 year prior to through 1 year after implementation of the induction policy. This study assesses the relative fit of risk/protective and social ecological models of youth violence among predominantly Asian and Pacific Islander students. Data from a 2007 survey of two multi-ethnic high schools in Hawai'i were used. The survey assessed interpersonal youth violence, suicidality and risk and protective factors. Two models of youth violence (risk/protective and social ecological) were tested using structural equation modeling. We found good fits for the risk/protective model (χ(2) = 369.42, df = 77, P < .0001; CFI = .580; RMSEA = .066) and the ecological model (χ(2) = 1763.
