Sledding injuries: a rationale for helmet usage.

BACKGROUND: Sledding is a popular and seeming innocuous winter sport, but we hypothesize that sled injuries are much like bicycle injuries. Current literature supports helmet usage in other winter sports, but little information can be found to clarify the use of helmets in sledding. The objectives of the study are to assess the injury patterns of sled riders and clarify the need for helmet usage and to locate specific geographic catchments in which resources can be better focused. METHODS: After Institutional Review Board approval, the registry of a Level I pediatric trauma center was evaluat

Youth motorcycle-related brain injury by state helmet law type: United States, 2005-2007.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Twenty-seven states have youth-specific helmet laws even though such laws have been shown to decrease helmet use and increase youth mortality compared with all-age (universal) laws. Our goal was to quantify the impact of age-specific helmet laws on youth under age 20 hospitalized with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Our cross-sectional ecological group analysis compared TBI proportions among US states with different helmet laws. We examined the following null hypothesis: If age-specific helmet laws are as effective as universal laws, there will be no differen

Community-based programmes to promote use of bicycle helmets in children aged 0-14 years: a systematic review.

Hospital-based research has shown that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head injury in bicycle riders. These studies have provided the impetus for community-wide interventions to increase the numbers of cyclists who wear helmets; however, the effectiveness of such programmes is undetermined. This study employs extensive search strategies to review the scientific literature to establish the effectiveness of community-wide programmes to increase helmet use among cyclists. Thirteen community-wide intervention studies using substantive methodologies were located in 16 published papers. The com

A randomized controlled trial of sport helmet interventions in a pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of 3 competing pediatric emergency department (ED) interventions aiming to increase sport helmet use in a state without helmet legislation. METHODS: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted during the 7-month period between April and October 2003 at an urban pediatric ED in a state without current helmet legislation. We enrolled 200 assenting English-speaking children aged 5 to 16 years, admitted to the ED for treatment, and who did not currently own a helmet. Participants were randomized into 3 experimental arms. A control group received u

Factors affecting the severity of horse-related injuries.

Horse riding and handling are uniquely dangerous. Knowledge of the risk factors of horse-related injuries is essential to prevent them. We aimed to define the factors that affect the severity of horse-related injuries and the length of hospital stay. A number of 231 patients (136 females and 95 males) with horse-related injuries were studied. A generalized linear model was used to test the effect of age, sex, cause of injury, complexity of the mechanism of injury, year, place of injury and profession of the injured, on the injury severity score (ISS) and the hospital stay. Fall from a horse wa

The changing pattern of head injury in Thailand.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patterns of head injury are changing with time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 3194 and 4217 consecutive trauma patients who attended the emergency room in 1985-86 and 1996 respectively were studied with respect to age, sex, cause of injury, injury severity, pathology, and outcome. RESULTS: The number of patients with head injury in 1996 nearly doubled (1224/4,217:29.03%) when compared to the 1985-86 study (504/3, 194; 15.78%). This was due to an increase in the outpatient subgroup (1009/1224). The admitted patients with head injury showed a pattern of less

Lifestyles and health risks of collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND: No study has comprehensively assessed the health behaviors of intercollegiate athletes. To determine whether they may be at increased risk for unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, we compared the lifestyle and health risk behaviors of a group of college athletes with those of their nonathletic peers. METHODS: A confidential survey questionnaire addressing preventable lifestyle behaviors was given to 109 intercollegiate athletes and 110 nonathlete controls. RESULTS: Athletes had a significantly (P less than .05) higher proportion of "risky" lifestyle behavior patterns compared with the

Management of Hemorrhage From Craniomaxillofacial Injuries and Penetrating Neck Injury in Tactical Combat Casualty Care: iTClamp Mechanical Wound Closure Device TCCC Guidelines Proposed Change 19-04 06 June 2019.

The 2012 study Death on the battlefield (2001-2011) by Eastridge et al.1 demonstrated that 7.5% of the prehospital deaths caused by potentially survivable injuries were due to external hemorrhage from the cervical region. The increasing use of Tactical Combat-Casualty Care (TCCC) and other medical interventions have dramatically reduced the overall rate of combat-related mortality in US forces; however, uncontrolled hemorrhage remains the number one cause of potentially survivable combat trauma. Additionally, the use of personal protective equipment and adaptations in the weapons used against

A cross-circulated bicephalic model of head transplantation.

AIMS: A successful cephalosomatic anastomosis ("head transplant") requires, among others, the ability to control long-term immune rejection and avoidance of ischemic events during the head transference phase. We developed a bicephalic model of head transplantation to study these aspects. METHODS AND RESULTS: The thoracic aorta and superior vena cava of a donor rat were anastomosed with the carotid artery and extracorporeal veins of a recipient rat by vascular grafts. Before thoracotomy in the donor rat, the axillary artery and vein of the donor were connected to the carotid and the extracrani

Impression precision after hydrogen peroxide sterilization of scanner sleeves.

INTRODUCTION: The iTero Element (Align Technologies, San Jose, CA, USA) is a widely used intraoral scanning device, and its protective sleeves for the scanning head are provided for single use. This condition puts the clinical management budget under financial strain and creates a disadvantage for managing environmental waste. The objective of our research was to assess how repeated sterilization of disposable scan head covers with hydrogen peroxide affected the precision of digital impressions. METHODS: Intraoral scans were carried out using the iTero Element 5D scanner on 26 patients. Hydro
