Spouses of patients with a stoma lack information and support and are restricted in their social and sexual life: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: A permanent stoma has a large impact on everyday life with several physical, mental, and social impairments for the individual. It seems obvious that if persons with stomas are affected socially by the stoma creation, it is likely that the family and/or relatives will be affected as well. The objective of this systematic review was to explore how stoma creation may affect spouses of patients with stomas. METHODS: A systematic review was undertaken based on database searches including studies published from 1950 to 2012. We applied a method of synthesis based on narrative summaries of

[Tsutsugamushi disease and Japanese spotted fever recognition among medical seminar participants for the general public in epidemic and non-epidemic areas].

Questionnaires on Tsutsugamushi disease (TD) and Japanese spotted fever (JSF) recognition, were distributed at lectures to the general public held in Sakai, Osaka (Lecture A), and Sumoto, Hyogo (Lecture B). Questions included knowledge of transmission routes, symptoms, and seeing physicians after having suspected symptoms. Hyogo had more reported cases of both diseases than Osaka. The response was 57.9% (113/195) to Lecture A, and 87.2% (61/70) to Lecture B. Analysis covered 89 Lecture A and 53 Lecture B respondents after excluding medical and public health specialists and those with unknown o

Before your very eyes: illness, agency, and the management of Tourette Syndrome.

In this article, I examine the ways that people with Tourette Syndrome (TS) manage the motor and vocal tics characteristic of this neurological disorder. To mitigate the powerful stigmas associated with TS, individuals must either remove tics from public view or strive to recast the way that they are perceived. Drawing on ethnographic research with TS sufferers in Indiana, I elaborate three strategies by which this is done, strategies referred to here as displacement, misattribution, and contextualization. These processes strongly affect both the symptoms themselves and the subjective experien

[Present knowledge on the effects of smoking tobacco on the eye diseases].

It is accepted that tobacco smoking impairs different functions of the organ of vision and can be the cause of different eye diseases. It is well-known that tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 substances, some of them exerting toxic influence on the eye by producing the ischemia or/and oxidative stress. In previous years, the association between tobacco smoking and cataract, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), thyroid eye disease, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) were observed. It was also suggested that smoking might have a negative impact on t

The Foley catheter in the management of epistaxis.

The Foley urinary catheter has been used in the management of epistaxis for many years, yet it has never been designed or licensed for this purpose. We performed a telephone questionnaire of senior house officers in 90 ENT departments in England and Wales. The aim was to determine how many departments used the Foley catheter for epistaxis management, whether licensed nasal balloon devices were available and if there had been any complications associated with their use. Eighty-three (92%) ENT departments in the study used the Foley catheter for epistaxis management and 44 (49%) departments had

[Attitudes toward estrogen replacement therapy. Study conducted on a sample population of women attending an ambulatory care center for the treatment of menopause].

Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment of menopausal disturbances and has an established role in reducing the cardiovascular risk and in preventing the postmenopausal osteoporosis. Nevertheless several reports have evidenced that compliance with hormonal replacement therapy was not as good as expected, and that physician's and women's opinions can strongly influence the HRT choice, and the continuation of HRT use. The aim of this study was to assess the opinions and the expectations of menopausal women toward HRT. PATIENT AND METHODS. We utilized a questionnaire exp

Medical students' attitudes and perceptions on abortion: a cross-sectional survey among medical interns in Maharastra, India.

INTRODUCTION: Although abortion care has been an established routine since decades in India, 8% of maternal mortality is attributed to unsafe abortion. Increased knowledge and improved attitudes among health care providers have a potential to reduce barriers to safe abortion care by reducing stigma and reluctance to provide abortion. Previous research has shown that medical students' attitudes can predict whether they will perform abortions. The objective of our study was to explore attitudes toward abortion among medical interns in Maharastra, India. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey wa

Impact of a health education intervention on knowledge, attitudes, and use of visibility materials among commercial motorcycle riders: a quasi-experimental study in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Commercial motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable road users in low- and middle-income countries, with poor visibility contributing significantly to road traffic crashes, particularly under low-light conditions. Visibility materials such as reflective clothing and functional motorcycle lighting systems are effective, low-cost injury prevention measures; however, their use remains suboptimal. This study evaluated the impact of a theory-driven health education intervention on knowledge, attitudes, and use of visibility materials among commercial motorcycle riders in Cameroon

The impact of television on attitudes towards organ donation--a survey in a German urban population sample.

BACKGROUND: The stagnation or decrease in organ donation rates since 1992 in Germany has partly been attributed to the negative impact of reports about organ donation periodically presented by German television between 1992 and 1997. This study was performed to elucidate the impact of the media on the public's attitudes towards organ donation. METHODS: A questionnaire concerning different aspects of organ donation was sent to the parents of pupils of a high school in a German city in 1994 and 1998. RESULTS: In 1994, 940 adults could be identified who had (TV+, n = 546) or had not (TV-, n = 3

Knowledge of, attitudes toward, and preventive practices relating to cholera and oral cholera vaccine among urban high-risk groups: findings of a cross-sectional study in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: In endemic countries such as Bangladesh, consequences of cholera place an enormous financial and social burden on patients and their families. Cholera vaccines not only provide health benefits to susceptible populations but also have effects on the earning capabilities and financial stability of the family. Community-based research and evaluations are necessary to understand perceptions about and practices of the community relating to cholera and oral cholera vaccines. This may help identify the ways in which such vaccines may be successfully introduced, and other preventive measur

A roadmap for education to improve the quality of care in gout.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe obstacles to optimum management of gout by primary care physicians and to propose educational interventions to improve care. RECENT FINDINGS: In the past, gout education has been hampered by infrequency of continuing medical education courses, loss of excitement for a disease in which therapies have not changed (until recently), insufficient evidence-based medicine, and the lack of motivation by physicians to re-learn this disease once in active practice. We identify 10 common myths that impede appropriate treatment of gout, identify gaps in evidence-based medic
