Impact of mass chemotherapy on the morbidity due to soil-transmitted nematodes.

This review summarises current knowledge of the ill-effects of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and takes a detailed look at studies that have been published over the past decade describing the effect of mass anthelminthic use on the health of endemic communities. Mass chemotherapy appears to give maximal returns in terms of improved health in areas where hookworm is a major problem and albendazole is used regularly, along with iron supplements; in children it improves physical growth and iron stores, and in pregnant women it reduces the prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia. In areas where asca…

Infectious diseases in the 21st century.

Infecto-contagious diseases in the twenty-first century with respect to precedent will see themselves deprived of smallpox, dracunculiasis and very probably of paralyzing poliomyelitis. Vaccination-preventable diseases, such as measles, whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, rabies, some forms of meningitis, yellow fever and episodes of disseminated tuberculosis will greatly diminish in their rates of morbi-lethality; the elimination of some, and the eradication of measles, are expected. Other diseases such as diarrhea (including cholera), geo-helminthiasis, some severe respiratory tract infecti…

Survey for soil-transmitted helminths in Asahan Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The survey on soil-transmitted helminthiasis was carried out in the three villages of Asahan Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, between October 1981 and December 1982. The prevalence rates of geohelminthiasis proved to be extremely high (average 97%) in the three villages and more than 70% harboured three or more helminths, especially Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm. Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale were detected in 61.1% and 52.2% of 835 fecal specimens, respectively. The effects of two anthelmintics, Combantrin and Trivexan, were essentially the same agains…
