BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary mediastinal non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (PMNSGCTs) are occasionally complicated by a hematologic malignancy, as with somatic-type malignant tumors called germ cell tumors with somatic-type malignancy (GCTSTM) and are known to have a poor prognosis.

PURPOSE: To compare a lateral-flow device (LFD) method to the galactomannan assay (GM) for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (IA).
METHODS: First, 20 GM-positive serum samples stored for two years were retested with both the GM and LFD assays. Second, 153 serum samples from 91 immunocompromised patients suspected of having IA were tested prospectively, including 56 hematologic malignancies and 35 chronic illnesses with steroid therapy.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of invasive mold diseases (IMD) remains challenging. Here, the performance of panfungal PCR, Aspergillus and MucoralesPCR in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was evaluated.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center study including 167 hematologic patients at risk for IMD with BAL performed 2011-2014. Diagnostic performance of single tests (Aspergillus-, Mucorales-, and panfungal PCR, galactomannan (GM)≥0.5 and ≥1, culture/cytology) or in combination was calculated for predicting IMD comparing proven/probable or proven/probable/possible IMD vs no IMD, respectively.

The PI3K/AKT signaling is activated in various hematologic malignancies. Nutritional status of 86 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) was defined by anthropometric measurements and hematological and biochemical laboratory tests to establish prevalence of malabsorption and malnutrition. BACKGROUND: MIRAGE syndrome, a rare autosomal dominant disorder, is caused by heterozygous gain-of-function mutations in the SAMD9 gene. A key characteristic of MIRAGE syndrome is growth restriction. Although initially thought to stem mainly from prenatal and systemic factors, this growth restriction can also be a consequence of panhypopituitarism, leading to growth hormone deficiency (GHD).
