We injected herpes simplex virus type 2 of MS- or G-strain into the anterior chamber of BALB/c mice. In the contralateral eye inflammatory cell infiltration began in the ciliary body; focal retinitis, detected by day 8, led to total destruction of the retina by day 10. We describe a 36-year-old man with recurrent Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which became progressively more severe over a 13-year period. His episodes were apparently preceded by herpes simplex virus oral mucosal infections. A management protocol, including immediate therapy with acyclovir and prednisone at the onset of herpes simplex virus oropharyngitis, is outlined. BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus(HSV) encephalitis is typically an acute, monophasic illness but can rarely present as a chronic granulomatous encephalitis, especially among immunocompromised individuals. The diagnosis of chronic HSV encephalitis is challenging due to its prolonged latency period, atypical imaging findings, and potential false-negative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results. This report describes a rare case of chronic granulomatous HSV encephalitis in a child with an underlying immunodeficiency disorder- DiGeorge syndrome (DGS).

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Herpes-simplex-virus-associated erythema multiforme (HAEM) is characterized by lesional skin expression of the viral protein Pol and localized inflammation. The objective of this study is to examine the mechanism whereby Pol induces localized inflammation.
