INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use among gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals is disproportionately higher than among heterosexual individuals. Identifying the mechanisms behind these differences can inform prevention and cessation efforts aimed at advancing health equity. Internalizing and externalizing symptoms as mediators of tobacco (re)uptake among sexual minority individuals was examined.
METHODS: Waves 4 and 5 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (2016-2019) study were analyzed in 2022. Adolescents aged ≥14 and adults years not using tobacco at Wave 4 (n=21,676) were included. W

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening is recommended for those with a cervix who are 21 to 65 years old, with specific timelines being dependent on individual risk. This study compared rates of ever undergoing Papanicolaou (Pap) testing at the intersection of self-reported sexual minority (SM) status and race/ethnicity.
METHODS: Data from the National Health Interview Survey (2015 and 2018) were used to examine cervical cancer screening disparities. Natal females without a history of hysterectomy who were 21 to 65 years old and had reported their sexual orientation and Pap testing history wer

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) are more severe among some sexual minority subgroups. It is less understood whether mental health indicators also differ by sexual identity among those with more severe forms of AUD and TUD. We examined differences in mental health-related QoL by sex-specific sexual identity subgroup among those meeting criteria for moderate-to-severe AUD or moderate-to-severe TUD.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Epidemiologic Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (2012-2013; n = 36,309). Our analyses focused on those me

INTRODUCTION: There has been limited investigation of the sexuality and sexual dysfunction in non-heterosexual subjects by the sexual medicine community. Additional research in these populations is needed.
AIMS: To investigate and compare sexuality and sexual function in students of varying sexual orientations.
METHODS: An internet-based survey on sexuality was administered to medical students in North American between the months of February and July of 2008.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All subjects provided information on their ethnodemographic characteristics, sexual orientation, and sexual hi

In a previous study we found androgen receptor (AR) sex differences in several regions throughout the human hypothalamus. Generally, men had stronger nuclear AR immunoreactivity (AR-ir) than women. The strongest nuclear labeling was found in the caudal hypothalamus in the mamillary body complex (MBC), which is known to be involved in aspects of cognition and sexual behavior. The present study was carried out to investigate whether the sex difference in AR-ir of the MBC is related to sexual orientation or gender identity (i.e. the feeling of being male or female) or to circulating levels of and

We assessed changes in sexual behavior among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) over 20 years. Condom use with stable partners steadily declined from over 90 to 29 since the Swiss U U statement, with similar trajectories between men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexuals. Occasional partnership remained higher among MSM compared to heterosexuals even during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) social distancing.

OBJECTIVE: Health problems of gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) youth are reported as differing from those of heterosexual youth. Increased depression, suicide, substance use, homelessness, and school dropout have been reported. Most studies of GLB youth use clinical or convenience samples. The authors conducted a community school-based health survey that included an opportunity to self-identify as GLB.
METHOD: An anonymous self-report health care questionnaire was used during a community-based survey in 2 high schools in an upper middle class district.
RESULTS: Significantly increased health

Several difficulties are commonly observed in individuals living with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), such as interpersonal and romantic relationship issues. Although multiple studies have investigated the association between interpersonal relationships and ADHD, few have considered the role of sexual orientation. A total of 702 participants were recruited to complete an online self-report study; after data screening, 639 Canadian undergraduate psychology students (504 heterosexual, 135 non-heterosexual; 78% women) were retained and assessed on ADHD symptoms, attachment, gende

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; restricting caloric intake before, during, or after drinking to either offset calories or to increase intoxication) is common among college students and poses a threat to students' health. In conjunction, sexual minority (SM; i.e., not exclusively heterosexual) college students may be at increased risk of engaging in alcohol misuse and disordered eating compared to their heterosexual peers due to exposure to minority stress. However, little research has examined whether engagement in FAD differs by SM status. Body esteem (BE) is an important resilience factor

INTRODUCTION: Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a pillar of our national strategy to end the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. However, one of the largest obstacles to realizing the effectiveness of PrEP is expansion of prescription to all patients at risk for HIV. In this vignette-based study, we sought to investigate medical students' decision making regarding PrEP by presenting fictional patients, all of whom had HIV risk factors based on sexual behavior.
METHODS: We systematically varied patients' sexual orientation or gender identity (heterosexual female, gay male, bisexual ma

The HIV-1 epidemic is a remarkable public health concern in China, especially in developed trade areas. We aimed to investigate the interaction of migration with the local transmission network in a typical trade area, Yiwu City, the world's largest commodity distribution center. Based on 390 pol sequences from 413 participants diagnosed between 2014 and 2016, putative transmission clusters and the underlying demographic and behavioral characteristics were analyzed. Recent infection status was determined by HIV-1 limiting antigen avidity enzyme immunoassay to identify active clusters. Multiple

Is sexual orientation associated with sleep difficulties? In this article, we review empirical evidence that addresses this question. Stress is associated with sleep difficulties such as insomnia and, because members of sexual minorities experience greater stress, on average, than do others, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals can be expected to report more sleep difficulties than their heterosexual peers. We reviewed 17 studies published since 1990, with data gathered from more than 600,000 individuals; some included data on both quantity and quality of sleep. In nine of 12 relevant

BACKGROUND: Potential risks for transfusion-transmissible infections are identified by donor history questionnaires (DHQs), and donors with higher risks are deferred from donation. We assessed to which extent the currently used DHQs support the identification of infections among blood donors.
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2013, we analyzed data from notified HIV and HCV cases in the general population and positive blood donors in Germany. Logistic regressions were used to identify relevant infection risks. We estimated the possible effect of improved capture of risk factors for donor selection by

The results of 20 months' activity of the anonymous and free-of-charge detection centre of the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital group, Paris, concerning human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) are presented. During that period, 3,480 persons consulted and 3,332 anonymous questionnaires were filled and returned: 20.5 percent of the subjects were homosexuals, 6.5 percent were drug-addicts and 73 percent were non drug-addict heterosexuals; 31 percent used condoms. A total of 3,398 blood samples were collected; 232 sera were positive or undetermined for HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 by the ELISA method; 132 W

The medical community's efforts to address intimate partner violence (IPV) have often neglected members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population. Heterosexual women are primarily targeted for IPV screening and intervention despite the similar prevalence of IPV in LGBT individuals and its detrimental health effects. Here, we highlight the burden of IPV in LGBT relationships, discuss how LGBT and heterosexual IPV differ, and outline steps clinicians can take to address IPV in their LGBT patients.

The gendered dimensions of partner support in relationships where one partner has a chronic condition has been a recurring focus within the literature on gender and health. Such literature however typically focuses exclusively on heterosexual couples while same-sex relationships are rendered invisible, leading to the discourse around partner support being heteronormative. This article examines gendered dimensions within accounts of lesbian, gay and bisexual people with diabetes using a discursive psychological approach. The analysis identifies how participants drew upon a range of interpretati

Using Multicultural and Gender Case Conceptualization (MGCC) epistemology, the aim of this phenomenological study was to explore adult male victims' perceptions of gender and reflections on their experiences of gender-based violence (GBV). Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results indicated that, regardless of sexual orientation, participants experienced verbal and physical abuse due to their feminine gender expression, beginning in primary school and continuing through university and into the workplace. To reduce victimization, the men developed a range
