BACKGROUND: Increased femoral anteversion (IFA) causes functional problems (i.e., tripping, frequently falling, and fatigue) by affecting the pelvis and lower extremity biomechanics. In the frontal plane, increased contralateral pelvic drop and ipsilateral hip adduction, which are mainly considered deteriorated hip abductor muscle mechanisms, are associated with hip and knee injuries.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of femoral anteversion on hip abductor weakness and frontal plane pelvis-hip biomechanics during walking.
METHODS: The study included nine subjects with in

Lower-extremity injuries are common among dancers and cause significant absences from rehearsals and performances. For this study of lower-extremity injuries in 101 ballet and 47 modern dance students, injuries requiring medical attention sustained over 1 academic year were associated with the following data obtained at the beginning of the school year: ankle flexibility, sex, dance discipline, previous injury, body mass index, and years of training. Eighty-three of the 148 students (age range, 12 to 28 years) reported prior lower-limb injuries, the most common being ankle sprains (28% of all

The iliofemoral ligament (ILFL) is crucial for hip joint stability, and its laxity contributes to hip joint instability. However, the effects of ligament laxity on hip kinetics remain unclear. This study aimed to develop a musculoskeletal model incorporating the ILFL and investigate the effects of ILFL laxity on hip contact forces (HCFs) during gait. Gait data were collected from 22 healthy young adults, and 21 participants with complete data were used for subsequent analyses. A musculoskeletal model incorporating the ILFL was used to investigate HCFs and muscle forces during gait. Statistical

Knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) are two of the leading causes of disability globally. Knee OA is characterized by gradual degeneration of articular cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and functional limitations. Patients older than 50 years typically present with knee OA, but it can manifest earlier, particularly following traumatic knee injuries. Symptoms include pain, effusion, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Radiographs commonly are used to confirm a diagnosis of knee OA. Nonsurgical management options include weight loss, lifestyle interventions, orthotic and assistive devices,

Given that increased use of the knee extensors relative to the hip extensors may contribute to various knee injuries, there is a need for a practical method to characterize movement behavior indicative of how individuals utilize the hip and knee extensors during dynamic tasks. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether the difference between sagittal plane trunk and tibia orientations obtained from 2D video (2D trunk-tibia) could be used to predict the average hip/knee extensor moment ratio during athletic movements. Thirty-nine healthy athletes (15 males and 24 females) perform

We report the case of a 13-year-old boy, who suffered a posterior hip dislocation from playing soccer. Closed reduction was performed urgently. Because of a nonconcentric hip after closed reduction, further imaging was done. An intra-articular bony fragment was identified. Arthroscopic treatment was performed. Through an anterior portal we were able to locate the intra-articular bony fragment, which was located within the region of the fovea. After lifting of the caudal enfolded labral complex, we were able to remove the fragment. Evidence of a grade 3 cartilage defect was present at the femor

BACKGROUND: For hip posterior fracture-dislocation, the current consensus is to perform joint reduction within 6 h to prevent sequelae. However, whether a closed reduction (CR) should be performed at the emergency department (ED) or in the operation theater (OT) remains debatable. We aimed to assess the incidence and factors predictive of CR failure at the ED in patients with hip posterior fracture-dislocation.
METHODS: Patients with hip posterior fracture-dislocation between 2009 and 2019 were included. Age, sex, body mass index (BMI), injury severity score, new injury severity score, time f

BACKGROUND: Traumatic obturator dislocation of the hip joint associated with greater trochanter fracture is a rare injury. We used the lateral approach through the rectus abdominis to remove the femoral head dislocated into the obturator, and the posterolateral approach was used for reduction and internal fixation of the femoral greater trochanteric fracture and total hip replacement (THR). Good follow-up results were achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on this particular type of injury and on this approach to treating this type of injury.

BACKGROUND: Hip dislocations are one of the orthopedic emergencies. They may result from a high-energy transfer as in a road traffic crash. Prompt recognition and treatment can reduce the long-term morbidity associated with delayed reduction. The goal of this study was to evaluate the epidemiology and outcome of treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study that involved cases of traumatic hip dislocations seen at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, between January 1, 2010 and June 30, 2014. Biodemographic characteristics, mechanism of injury, and type of dislo

As the world's population ages, hip fractures pose a significant health care problem. Hip fractures in the elderly are associated with impaired mobility, and increased morbidity and mortality. Associated conditions, such as osteoporosis, medical comorbidity, and dementia, pose a significant concern and determine optimal treatment. One-year mortality rates currently range from 14% to 36%, and care for these patients represents a major global economic burden. The incidence of hip fractures is bimodal in its distribution. Young adult hip fractures are the result of high energy trauma, and the lar

PURPOSE: Examination of the hip provides information regarding risk for pre-arthritic hip disorders, knee injuries, and low back pain. The purpose of this study was to report a hip screening examination of asymptomatic female soccer athletes and to test the hypothesis that these findings vary by competition experience.
METHODS: Asymptomatic females from a youth soccer club, a college, and a professional team were evaluated. Passive hip range of motion, hip abduction strength, and hip provocative tests were assessed. Data were compared for the grade/middle school, high school, college, and pro

BACKGROUND: The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is an important structure in knee stabilization. Knee cartilage degeneration after a PCL injury has been reported in several studies. Understanding the changes in movement patterns of patients with PCL ruptures could help clinicians make specific treatment protocols to restore patients' sporting ability and prevent joint degeneration. However, the kinematics and kinetics of the lower limb in patients with PCL injuries are still not clear.
PURPOSE: To investigate the biomechanical characteristics during level walking in patients with isolated P

BACKGROUND: Posterior hip dislocation in children and adolescents may involve the non-ossified posterior acetabular wall. Plain radiographs and computed tomography (CT) have been shown to underestimate injury to the unossified acetabulum as well as associated soft-tissue structures.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe findings on radiographs, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after posterior hip dislocation in a series of adolescents and to report the intraoperative findings, which are considered the gold standard. Measurements of the posterior wall length using MRI and

Hip instability is defined generally as extraphysiologic femoroacetabular motion classically observed as a sequela of prior trauma, hip arthroplasty, and developmental hip dysplasia. However, new concepts regarding subtle forms of hip instability have gained importance in recent discussions and literature with the emergence of the term microinstability. It can manifest as apprehension, especially while descending stairs, deep hip pain, and/or groin pain. Such patients commonly are evaluated by obtaining a detailed patient history and performing focused examination and radiographic imaging, alt

BACKGROUND: A correctly chosen radiographic technique, good image quality and correct image interpretation are the basis of all surgical planning. It is only when the cause and extent of the hip pathology are evaluated carefully based on radiologic imaging that the long-term surgical success of hip and pelvis osteotomy is possible.
TARGET: This article gives an overview over performance, quality criteria and interpretation of the most important radiographic images of the hip.
RESULTS: The anterior-posterior pelvic view is the most important radiograph for planning an osteotomy of the hip. Be
