Transmission of STIs/HIV at the partnership level: beyond individual-level analyses.

Mathematical modeling of transmission dynamics of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV has considerably advanced HIV research by highlighting the importance of certain types of partnerships in epidemic spread. Notably, concurrent partnerships, defined as a sexual partnership in which one or more of the partnership members have other sexual partners while continuing sexual activity with the original partner, have been shown to play a fundamental role in potentiating the spread of STIs and HIV. Risk behaviors such as concurrency and sex without condoms as well as STI/HIV prevalence var

A core group model for disease transmission.

Models for sexually transmitted diseases generally assume that the size of the core group is fixed. Publicly available information on disease prevalence may influence the recruitment of new susceptibles into highly sexually active populations. It is assumed that the recruitment rate into the core population is low while disease prevalence is high, core group members mix only with each other, disease levels outside the core are negligible, and some core group members reduce their risk through the use of a partially effective vaccine or prophylactics. A demographic-epidemic model is formulated i

The occurrence of atypical sexual experience among various female patient groups.

Clinical interviews with the use of a standard examination format were used to determine sexually atypical experiences in 373 women. The women were divided into three groups. Group 1: 167 women in fertile marriages, Group 2: 102 patients with sexual dysfunctions, Group 3: 104 patients of psychiatric outpatient clinics. Of these, 190 (50.9%) had encountered indecent exposure at least once; 76 women (20.4%) were the victims of attempted rape or rape; 60 women (16.1%) were sexually abused by an adult male prior to menarche; 36 women (9.6%) acknowledged homosexual contacts. Patients with a sexual

Psychosocial characteristics of applicants evaluated for surgical gender reassignment.

Social, sexual, economic, familial, and psychological characteristics of 764 applicants for surgical gender reassignment, 479 males and 285 females, who completed the application questionnaire and were subsequently interviewed by the Gender Dysphoria Program in Palo Alto, California, are examined. All information except diagnosis was obtained from the applicants' responses to a standardized 100-item questionnaire. Diagnosis was determined by a psychiatrist after a 1 1/2-hour interview. A comparison of male applicants to female applicants indicated differences in five areas: (1) sexual history;

Lesbian couples: should help extend to AID?

A considerable amount of publicity has recently centred on a few Lesbian couples who have successfully obtained artificial insemination by donor (AID) in order to have a child. Advice was orginally sought on a private basis from the Journal on the following case: now the issue is public knowledge, the doctor presenting the case has agreed to open discussion, and a case conference was convened to consider it. Those taking part were: Jackie Forster, Co-editor of Sappho; lesbian feminist magazine; Carola Haigh, General Practitioner, London; Ian Kennedy, Barrister and Lecturer in Law, Kings Colleg

Microbicides-emerging essential pillars of comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention.

A quarter century old and still going strong, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is already the deadliest and longest lasting plague in mankind's recorded history. Reportedly among the weakest of the viruses, HIV's survival instincts have relied on extreme adaptability at the molecular and virologic levels on its part. In addition, it has preyed on certain prevalent weaknesses on the part of its host (human society) - extreme poverty; gender bias; lack of education and high prevalence of STIs- to prolong its lethal grip on humanity for as long as possible. This astounding adaptability is evident by the tre

"Little Tablets of Gold": An Examination of the Psychological and Social Dimensions of PrEP Among LGBTQ Communities.

There are significant psychological, social, and cultural dimensions to the HIV epidemic in the United States, especially among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities. Biomedical HIV treatment has been shown to impact these dimensions. However, there is little understanding of the real-world psychosocial and sociocultural effects of the latest biomedical HIV prevention strategy, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This study explored the psychosocial and sociocultural dimensions of PrEP use among LGBTQ adults. We interviewed 23 LGBTQ adults who were current or form

Correlates of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a primary care sentinel surveillance network.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia is the most commonly notified infection in Australia. Prevention strategies should be informed by routine data on at-risk populations. METHODS: We calculated chlamydia positivity and correlates of infection using multivariable logistic regression for data collected between April 2006 and June 2009. RESULTS: Chlamydia positivity was 5.6% in 12233 females, 7.7% in 10316 heterosexual males and 6.2% in 7872 men who have sex with men (MSM). Correlates of chlamydia positivity among females included younger age (odds ratio (OR) 2.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.92-2.69), be

A population-based study of sexual orientation identity and gender differences in adult health.

OBJECTIVES: We provide estimates of several leading US adult health indicators by sexual orientation identity and gender to fill gaps in the current literature. METHODS: We aggregated data from the 2001-2008 Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance surveys (N = 67,359) to examine patterns in self-reported health by sexual orientation identity and gender, using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Compared with heterosexuals, sexual minorities (i.e., gays/lesbians, 2% of sample; bisexuals, 1%) were more likely to report activity limitation, tension or worry, smoking, drug use,

Childhood abuse and mental health indicators among ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research has established that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people experience higher rates of childhood abuse than heterosexuals. However, there has been little research on the mental health impact of these experiences or how race/ethnicity might influence prevalence and mental health impact of childhood abuse in this population. The study's objective was to examine the relationships between race/ethnicity, childhood abuse, and mental health indicators in a national sample of LGB adults. METHOD: Participants were recruited via the Internet through snowball and targeted sam

Polysubstance use by sexual identity among US adults, 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding polysubstance use among US sexual minority adults is important to serve as a population-level baseline to promote health equity around substance use prevention and public health strategies. This study quantifies the number of substances used by sexual identity among US adults. METHODS: We used the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health and included adults (aged ≥18) (unweighted n = 47,291). We conducted multivariable Poisson regression models to examine the number of substances used in the past year (count variable; range: 0-18) by sexual identity ("heterosexual"

Changes and challenges of the archives: researching early-twentieth century lesbianism in United States prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Changes and Challenges of the Archives" is based on a still-in-progress master's thesis that I will complete by May 2021 at Sarah Lawrence College. The purpose of this article is not to come to any conclusions about the challenges of researching lesbian history during the COVID-19 pandemic but, rather, to explore how these world circumstances have further complicated the labor required of a lesbian historian. Many elements of this thesis and research are still in flux, including my investigation of the role race played in creating and developing a sexually deviant, criminalized definition of

Differences in Family Health History Knowledge Among Bisexual and Lesbian Women.

PURPOSE: We aimed to determine whether there are differences between sexual minority women and heterosexual women in family health history knowledge. METHODS: We used data from Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation's The Health of Women Study®. We included women who completed two of six online surveys between 2012 and 2015 (n = 22,410). RESULTS: Compared with heterosexual women, bisexual and lesbian women had consistently greater odds of not knowing their family health history (e.g., odds ratios of 2.59 and 1.56 for breast cancer, respectively). CONCLUSION: To avoid exacerbating existing healt

Substance use and mental health disparities among sexual minority girls: results from the Pittsburgh girls study.

PURPOSE: To examine substance use and mental health disparities between sexual minority girls and heterosexual girls. METHODS: Data from the Pittsburgh Girls Study were analyzed. All girls were 17 years old. Girls were included if they were not missing self-reported sexual orientation and mental health data (N = 527). Thirty-one girls (6%) endorsed same-sex romantic orientation/identity or current same-sex attraction. Bivariate analyses were conducted to test group differences in the prevalence of substance use and suicidal behavior, and group differences in depression, anxiety, borderline pe
