Oral lesions and immune reconstitution syndrome in HIV+/AIDS patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy. Epidemiological evidence.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether opportunistic oral infections associated to HIV infection (OOI-HIV) are found in HIV+/AIDS patients with immune reconstitution related to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). METHODS: From among 1100 HIV+/AIDS patients (Service of Internal Medicine, Carlos Haya Hospital, Malaga, Spain) subjected to review of the oral cavity between January 1996 and May 2007, we identified those examined in 1996 and which were again examined between 1997 and 2007, and were moreover receiving HAART. The following data were collected: age, gender, form of contagion, antir

[From the apprehension of sexually transmissible diseases to the prevention of HIV].

Over the past few years in France, the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has not decreased. Among the most frequent sexually transmissible diseases (STD) in France (condyloma, genitoanal herpes, chlamydia infections), certain STD, considered as negligible, have reappeared: gonorrhoea and syphilis affect male homosexuals and, to a lesser degree, men and women whose epidemiological profile remains to be determined. The health organization is not in favour of associating STD with HIV in its anti-aids strategy. However, acute STD are not only indicator of habits at risk for HIV, but

Clinical experience of HIV/AIDS in a municipal hospital in Taiwan.

To describe the spectrum of epidemiological and major clinical manifestations of patients infected by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in a municipal hospital, a retrospective review was done of 53 HIV-1-infected patients who had been admitted to Taipei Municipal Jen-Ai Hospital between January 1990, and July 1996. The majority (94.3%) of the patients in the cohort were male. Peak incidence was found in the fourth decade (28.3%). Forty-four (83%) patients presented in the first hospital stay with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The mean duration between establishment of d

Polish adaptation of the Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the conducted research was to prepare the Polish adaptation of the Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire (DHEQ) by Kimberly Balsam et al. (2013) and to verify psychometric characteristics of the Polish adaptation. This original tool manages to address the experiences of prejudice and discrimination affecting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people. METHODS: Data from 197 Polish LGBT participants were collected online. Mean age of participants was 31 years (M = 31.93; SD = 8.37). Nearly 17% (N = 33) of participants were transgender,alittleover19% (N =

Biogenetic ties and parent-child relationships: The misplaced critique.

According to an almost axiomatic standard in bioethics, moral commitment should ground parents' relationship with their children, rather than biogenetic relatedness. This standard has been used lately to express skepticism about extending existing assisted reproductive treatments (ARTs) to same-sex couples and to research into novel fertility interventions for those couples, but this skepticism is misplaced on several grounds. As a matter of access and equity, same-sex couples seem presumptively entitled to genetic relatedness to their children as far as possible both in regard to existing ART

Multidimensional characterization of sexual minority adolescents' sexual safety strategies.

Young adults have high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Sexual minority youths' risk for STIs, including HIV, is as high as or higher than sexual majority peers'. Sexual safety, while often treated as a single behavior such as condom use, can be best conceptualized as the result of multiple factors. We used latent class analysis to identify profiles based on ever-used sexual safety strategies and lifetime number of partners among 425 self-identified LGBTQ youth aged 14-19. Data collection took place anonymously online. We identified four specific subgroup profiles for males and

In sickness and in health: same-sex marriage laws and sexually transmitted infections.

This paper analyzes the relationship between same-sex marriage laws and sexually transmitted infections in the United States using state-level data from 1981 to 2008. We hypothesize that same-sex marriage laws may directly affect risky homosexual behavior; may affect or mirror social attitudes toward gays, which in turn may affect homosexual behavior; and may affect or mirror attitudes toward non-marital sex, which may affect risky heterosexual behavior. Our findings may be summarized as follows. Laws banning same-sex marriage are unrelated to gonorrhea rates, which are a proxy for risky heter

Individual trajectories of substance use in lesbian, gay and bisexual youth and heterosexual youth.

AIMS: Several decades of research have shown that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults are at high risk for substance use and substance use disorders, and a recent meta-analysis shows that these disparities most probably begin in adolescence; however, no studies to date have examined longitudinal growth in substance use in LGB youth and heterosexual youth to determine if they follow different trajectories into young adulthood. The primary aims of this paper were to estimate individual trajectories of substance use in youth and examine differences between self-identified LGB and heterosexual

Substance abuse counsellor's attitudes regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered clients.

PURPOSE: The attitudes of substance abuse counselors can have significant effects on their client's recovery. This study examined the attitudes and knowledge of substance abuse counselors regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) clients. METHODS: 242 substance abuse counselors in Iowa completed mail-in questionnaires. RESULTS: The counselors reported very little formal education regarding the needs of these clients, and nearly half had negative or ambivalent attitudes. Respondents had the greatest negativity regarding transgendered clients and reported knowing the least abo

Increased Post-Covid 2019 burden of gonorrhea at a tertiary care hospital in Delhi: Cause for concern.

INTRODUCTION: Gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an sexually transmitted infection (STI), particularly observed among young people between 15 and 24 years of age. Gonorrhoea remains a significant public health problem due to its recent resurgence and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Understanding the epidemiological patterns is crucial for effectively addressing the burden of the disease and developing targeted interventions. METHODS: This was a single center and retrospective study conducted over 6 years from March 2018 to March 2024. The case records of 69 patients of gonor

Using Facebook to Recruit Young Australian Men Into a Cross-Sectional Human Papillomavirus Study.

BACKGROUND: Young men can be difficult to engage in health research using traditional methods of recruitment. Social networking sites are increasingly being used to recruit participants into health research, due to their cost effectiveness, overall generalizability, and wide reach. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of using Facebook to recruit young Australian men into a human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence study. METHODS: We recruited male permanent residents of Australia, aged 18 to 35 years, into the HPV in Young Males (HYM) study through targeted advertis

Gendered accounts of managing diabetes in same-sex relationships: A discursive analysis of partner support.

The gendered dimensions of partner support in relationships where one partner has a chronic condition has been a recurring focus within the literature on gender and health. Such literature however typically focuses exclusively on heterosexual couples while same-sex relationships are rendered invisible, leading to the discourse around partner support being heteronormative. This article examines gendered dimensions within accounts of lesbian, gay and bisexual people with diabetes using a discursive psychological approach. The analysis identifies how participants drew upon a range of interpretati

Primary health care and equity: the case of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex Australians.

The current period of health reform in Australia offers an opportunity for positive actions to be taken to address the significant challenges that lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and other sexuality, sex and gender diverse (LGBTI) people face in the health system. This paper provides analysis of why this group should be considered a priority health group using a social determinants of health framework, which has, to date, largely been ignored within primary health care policy reform in Australia. Several key areas of the primary health care reform package are considered in relation to

Racial and ethnic differences in current use of cigarettes, cigars, and hookahs among lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Research demonstrates that lesbians, gays, and bisexuals (i.e., LGBs or sexual minorities) smoke more than their heterosexual peers, but relatively less is known about the heterogeneity within LGB populations, namely racial/ethnic differences. Moreover, smoking research on sexual minorities has focused mainly on cigarette smoking, with little attention to other forms of smoking, such as hookahs/water pipes. METHODS: Using a large national sample of college students, we examined differences by race and sexual orientation in prevalence of smoking cigarettes, cigars/cigarillos/clov

[Overview of the biological etiology of transsexualism].

Gender identity disorder, or transsexualism as it is more commonly known, is a highly complex clinical entity. The general belief among behavioural scientists and physicians is that transsexualism is an identifiable and incapacitating disease which can be diagnosed and successfully treated by reassignment surgery. Although the exact etiology of gender identity disorder is unknown, several environmental, genetic and anatomical theories have been described. The reviewers draw attention to the possible genetic, hormonal, immunological and anatomical causes. An attempt is made to point out the fut

Population differences in finger-length ratios: ethnicity or latitude?

The relative length of the second and fourth fingers (the 2D:4D ratio) has been taken to be an indicator of prenatal exposure to testosterone, and hence possibly relevant to sexual orientation and other sex-differentiated behaviors. Studies have reported a difference in this ratio between Caucasian males in Britain and in the U.S.: higher average 2D:4D ratios were obtained in Britain. This raises the question of whether differences among different Caucasian gene pools were responsible or whether some environmental variable associated with latitude might be involved (e.g., exposure to sunlight
