Surfactant-enhanced in-situ oxidation of DNAPL source zone: Experiments and numerical modeling.

In this study we investigate the synergetic effects of combining surfactant-enhanced dissolution with in-situ oxidation of a pool-dominated PCE DNAPL source zone entrapped in porous media. Flow cell flushing experiments packed with silica sand and natural calcareous soil were conducted with a surfactant (Tween 80) and permanganate (MnO4-) used as dissolution and oxidation agents, respectively. The resultant breakthrough curves exhibited a multiple step behavior with mass removal controlled in the latter stages by the less-accessible DNAPL mass. DNAPL spatial architecture, flow-field heterogene

Significance of temperature as a key driver in ZVI PRB applications for PCE degradation.

We report on the potential of elevated groundwater temperatures and zero-valent iron permeable reactive barriers (ZVI PRBs), for example, through a combination with underground thermal energy storage (UTES), to achieve enhanced remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) contaminated groundwater. Building on earlier findings concerning deionized solutions, we created a database for mineralized groundwater based on temperature dependence of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) degradation using two popular ZVIs (i.e., Gotthart-Maier cast iron [GM] and ISPAT sponge iron [IS]) in column experiments at 25 °

Enhanced air sparging for groundwater remediation using alginate gel-based removable hydraulic barriers.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a removable physical barrier on the air sparging performance using a lab-scale aquifer model was investigated. The barrier was installed in water-saturated porous media, prior to the air sparging, by injecting calcium chloride aqueous solution into the aquifer with pre-applied alginate solution. Changes in the air flow direction and air flux at the media surface during air sparging were evaluated. With a hydrogel barrier set at the center of the media, the airflow detoured the barrier resulting in a bimodal air flux distribution at t

An extension of gases-brine mutual solubility models to include geochemical reactions: Modeling and applications.

Accurate and quantitative numerical modeling of phase behavior and speciation of gas-water-rock systems is crucial for fluid and rock evolution analysis, and important in scientific research and engineering applications. In our previous work, mutual solubility models of series gases and brine have been developed for wide temperature, pressure and composition ranges. The gas components included CO2, CH4, H2S, N2 and O2. The existing experimental data can be reproduced accurately. In this paper, the models are extended to include water-rock interactions by means of a full coupling with the open-

Mass fluxes of dissolved arsenic discharging to the Meghna River are sufficient to account for the mass of arsenic in riverbank sediments.

Shallow (<30 m) reducing groundwater commonly contains abundant dissolved arsenic (As) in Bangladesh. We hypothesize that dissolved As in iron (Fe)-rich groundwater discharging to rivers is trapped onto Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides which precipitate in shallow riverbank sediments under the influence of tidal fluctuations. Therefore, the goal of this study is to compare the calculated mass of sediment-bound As that would be sequestered from dissolved groundwater As that discharges through riverbanks of the Meghna River to the observed mass of As trapped within riverbank sediments. To calculate groundw

Improved Darcian streambed measurements to quantify flux and mass discharge of volatile organic compounds from a contaminated aquifer to an urban stream.

Quantifying VOC transport from contaminated groundwater to streams is challenging and important for understanding off-site migration of VOCs, cross-media contamination (groundwater to surface water and eventually air), and potential impacts on downstream ecosystems and human populations. A streambed point sampling approach was used to quantify fluxes of water and 14 VOCs from groundwater to an urban stream in North Carolina, USA, during summer (June 2015) and winter (January 2016). The approach is unique in coupling measurements of vertical hydraulic conductivity, vertical hydraulic head gradi

Potential effects on groundwater quality associated with infiltrating stormwater through dry wells for aquifer recharge.

Dry wells (gravity-fed infiltration wells) have frequently been used to recharge aquifers with stormwater, especially in urban areas, as well as manage flood risk and reduce surface water body contamination from stormwater pollutants. However, only limited assessment of their potential adverse impacts on groundwater quality exists. Dry well recharge can bypass significant portions of the filtering-capacity of the vadose zone. Stormwater and groundwater monitoring data and analysis of transport of a wide range of historic and current-use stormwater chemicals of concern is lacking. To address th

Simulating degradation of organic compounds accounting for the growth of microorganisms (Monod kinetics) in a fully Lagrangian framework.

Biologically mediated degradation of organic compounds in porous media is a complex mathematical problem, described by a non-linear differential equation. The organic compound gets in contact with the biomass, and an enzyme-catalysed reaction takes place. The net result is that part of the parent compound degrades into some daughter product, while some of the organic carbon is used for microbial growth. The rate of biomass growth in the presence of a limiting nutrient supply is usually modelled with the experimentally derived Monod equation, i.e., it is proportional to the actual existing biom

Determining effective diffusion coefficients of chlorohydrocarbons in natural clays: Unique results from highly resolved controlled release field experiments.

This study aims to precisely determine the effective diffusion coefficients of chlorohydrocarbons in low permeable units under in-situ field conditions. To this end, two controlled release field experiments using TCE and PCE as dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) were conducted in two natural clayey deposits. Several months to years after the controlled DNAPL release, highly resolved concentration profiles were determined for the chlorohydrocarbons that had diffused into the clayey deposits. Effective diffusion coefficients for TCE and PCE were then determined by calibrating a 3D numerica

A novel concept for estimating the contaminant mass discharge of chlorinated ethenes emanating from clay till sites.

Interest in using contaminant mass discharge (CMD) for risk assessment of contaminated sites has increased over the years, as it accounts for the contaminant mass that is moving and posing a risk to water resources and receptors. The most common investigation of CMD involves a transect of multilevel wells; however, this is an expensive undertaking, and it is difficult to place it in the right position in a plume. Additionally, infrastructure at the site needs to be considered. To derive an initial CMD estimate at a contaminated site and to allow for the prioritization of further investigations

Transport and removal of spores of Bacillus subtilis in an alluvial gravel aquifer at varying flow rates and implications for setback distances.

To guarantee proper protection from fecally transmitted pathogen infections, drinking water wells should have a sufficiently large setback distance from potential sources of contamination, e.g. a nearby river. The aim of this study was to provide insight in regards to microbial contamination of groundwater under different flow velocities, which can vary over time due to changes in river stage, season or pumping rate. The effects of these changes, and how they affect removal parameters, are not completely understood. In this study, field tracer tests were carried out in a sandy gravel aquifer n

Thermally-induced changes in tropical soils properties and potential implications to sequential nature-based solutions.

Some remediation techniques, such as thermal remediation, can significantly change the soil properties. These changes can be beneficial or detrimental to the sequential application of Nature-based Solutions. This work evaluated the effects of thermal remediation on the properties of two tropical soils (Technosol and Oxisol), and discuss how these changes might impact both biotic and abiotic degradation processes. Bench tests using disturbed samples were performed under oxic and anoxic conditions, whereas 3D physical models were used to simulate the heat distribution along undisturbed samples.

Beneficial effects of dynamic groundwater flow and redox conditions on Natural Attenuation of mono-, poly-, and NSO-heterocyclic hydrocarbons.

Natural Attenuation (NA) processes have been demonstrated to reduce pollutant loads at different contaminated groundwater sites world-wide and are increasingly considered in contaminated site management concepts. However, data are mainly available for steady state groundwater flow and stable redox conditions as well as pollutants listed in standard regulatory schemes. In this study, the influence of transient groundwater flow and redox conditions on NA was examined at a former gas works site near the river Rhine in Germany. The investigated 78 pollutants included 40 mono- and polyaromatic hydr

Improved Domenico solution for three-dimensional contaminant transport.

The Domenico solution is a widely used analytical solution in screening tools such as BioScreen, FATE5, BioChlor, ART3D, ArcNLET, Quick-Domenico, etc., to simulate the three-dimensional transport of reactive contaminants in groundwater. While being approximate, this solution presents a convenient closed-form expression for computing plume contaminant concentrations without the need for numerical integration. Previous studies have mathematically shown that the Domenico solution provides correct estimates of contaminant plume concentrations when the value of longitudinal dispersivity is zero. Ho

An analytical model for one-dimensional diffusion of degradable contaminant through a composite geomembrane cut-off wall.

A one-dimensional analytical model is proposed to analyze contaminant diffusion through a composite geomembrane cut-off wall (CGCW) composed of a geomembrane (GMB) and a bentonite cut-off wall (BCW). The model considers degradation process of contaminant and time-dependent inlet boundary condition which are common in engineering practices. Moreover, two limiting scenarios of the exit boundary condition (EBC) of CGCW for field conditions are taken into account, including the flushing and non-advective semi-infinite aquifer EBCs. The influence of boundary conditions and performance of CGCW are c

Favorable and unfavorable attachment of colloids in a discrete sandstone fracture.

The transport of cationic amine-modified latex (AML) and anionic carboxylate-modified latex (CML) microspheres through a discrete sandstone fracture with mineralogical heterogeneity and roughness was studied. Two microsphere sizes (200 nm and 1000 nm), two ionic strengths (5 mM and 10 mM), and two specific discharges (0.35 mm.s-1 and 0.70 mm.s-1) were tested to observe the impact on transport under favorable and unfavorable conditions. The difference in retention between AML (net favorable) and CML (net unfavorable) microsphere attachment was 25% for the 200 nm microspheres and 13% for the 100

Effectiveness and comparison of physical barriers on seawater intrusion and nitrate accumulation in upstream aquifers.

Physical barrier is a coastal engineering widely used to prevent seawater intrusion. However, previous studies have not evaluated the combined influence of type and structure of the physical barrier on nitrate accumulation in upstream aquifers. Furthermore, the mechanisms of nitrate accumulation caused by the physical barriers are still unclear. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the mechanisms and influence of the physical barrier on seawater intrusion and NO3- accumulation. The results show that constructing physical barrier can result in the reduction of nitr

Study on the immobile water of saturated compacted clay-rich materials by oil seepage.

Immobile water is defined as a firmly bound thin film of water surrounding clay particles that somehow resembles solid features. The characteristics and amount of immobile water depend on pore water chemistry, the type of clay, and the contact area of water with particles. Seepage can occur only when the hydraulic gradient increases sufficiently. To date, no accurate method is available to determine the immobile water content. Therefore, an approach is proposed for direct measurement of the immobile water content, which applies vegetable oil to displace water in saturated compacted clay-rich m

Removal of trichloroethene from thin clay lenses by electrical resistance heating: Laboratory experiments and the effects of gas saturation.

The removal of dissolved volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from low-permeability lenses is important to limit back diffusion at sites impacted by dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). In situ thermal treatment (ISTT) technologies have the potential to treat DNAPL-impacted sites by enhancing diffusion from low-permeability lenses during heating. A series of two-dimensional laboratory tank experiments was conducted to investigate heating, gas formation, and trichloroethene (TCE) removal from a clay lens surrounded by sand. Results showed preferential heating of the clay and substantial TCE r
