Comparative Histoanatomy of the Epiglottis and Preepiglottic Space of the Lemur Larynx.

OBJECTIVES: An adequate understanding of the evolution of the larynx presumably clarify the physiology and functional histoanatomy of the pr … o the thyroid cartilage anteroinferiorly without an intervening thyroepiglottic ligament and to the hyoid bone anteriorly with intervening large bundles of collagen fibers, indicating that the lemur epiglottis does not play the role of retroflection. The lemur larynges did not have a preepiglottic space. These findings also reflect the fact that lemurs do no …

Diagnostic model of anterior open bite--a new way to predict skeletal type: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine a differential diagnostic model for anterior open bite (AOB) in children in order to predict evolution with growth in cases of skeletal or dysfunctional dysplasia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample was composed of 128 subjects divided into 2 groups according to overbite values: a control group with normal occlusion and 2.5 ± 1mm overbite, and an AOB group with a negative overbite. Measurements of hyoid bone position, gonial angle, SN/Go-Gn, FMA, height of alveolar processes, upper lip height, height of the anterior nasal spine to stomion sup…

Sonographic anatomy of the neck: The suprahyoid region.

The suprahyoid region extends from the base of the skull to the hyoid bone and includes the pharyngeal, parapharyngeal, parotid, carotid, masticator, retropharyngeal, and perivertebral spaces, as well as the oral cavity. The areas that can be explored by ultrasound include the parotid, carotid, and masticator spaces; the oral cavity; the submandibular and sublingual spaces; the floor of the mouth; and the root of the tongue. The parotid space contains the parotid gland and the excretory duct of Steno, the facial nerve, the external carotid artery, the retromandibular vein, and the intraparotid…

Cephalometric pharyngeal changes after Le Fort I osteotomy in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Pharyngeal changes after Le Fort I osteotomy were evaluated cephalometrically in 37 patients (27 M, 10 F; mean age 23.8 years) with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). Seven patients had previously undergone velopharyngeal (VPP) flap surgery to improve speech. One year postoperatively the patients without previous VPP showed a significant change (55%-85% of the surgical change) in the upper and lower sagittal depth of the nasopharyngeal airway, but not in the depth of oropharyngeal airway, length of soft palate, or position of hyoid bone. No significant changes were observed between 6 mont…

Anterior to the lingual surface of the epiglottis, both fibre layers become apposed to form a dense collagenous mass, which may stabilise the epiglottis during deglutition. The cephalometric indices used were the length and diameter of the soft palate (spl and spd), the shortest distance between the mandibular plane and the hyoid bone (mph) and the posterior airway space (pas).
