The role of coping and problem drinking in men's abuse of female partners: test of a path model.

This article examines the relationship of coping and problem drinking to men's abusive behavior towards female partners. While previous research has demonstrated a consistent association between problem drinking and male abuse of intimate partners, virtually no studies have assessed the role of coping in relation to men's violence. Furthermore, multivariate studies have not examined how these factors operate together to increase risk for abusive behavior. An ethnically diverse sample of 147 men in a court-mandated program for domestic violence offenders completed questionnaires at the first se

[Dangerous practices and games at school].

Dangerous practices and games at school. Three separate categories of dangerous games can be distinguished. The non-oxygenating or fainting games, which consist of mechanical compressions or strangulative mechanisms. These are performed in the search of pseudo-hallucinogenic sensations. There are several such games: from the simple but non-the-less dangerous "tomato game", performed by younger children (from 3-4 years of age), to the "choking game", between 7 and 14 years of age. "Aggressive" or "violent" games which use physical and psychological violence from a group of people towards a sing

Methodology of China's national study on the evaluation, early recognition, and treatment of psychological problems in the elderly: the China Longitudinal Aging Study (CLAS).

Cognitive and depressive disorders are common in elderly Chinese and are becoming an increasingly important public health problem, partly because of the rapid aging of the population. To help address this issue China's national government has funded a major study to establish national standards for the early identification, evaluation and treatment of common psychological disorders in the elderly. The present paper describes the overall methodology of this study. Fifteen centers in eight provinces will recruit representative samples of subjects aged 60 and over, collect a detailed history, con

Chapter 17: cognitive assessment in neurology.

Modern interests in cognitive assessment began with Franz Gall's early 19th century theory of mental organology and Paul Broca's reports in the 1860s on patients with focal brain injury and aphemia. These workers spurred interest in assessing delimited mental abilities in relation to discrete cerebral areas. With roots in experimental and educational psychology, the intelligence testing movement added assessment tools that could be applied to neurological patients. Early- to mid-20th-century landmarks were Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon's intelligence scale, Howard Knox's nonverbal performanc

Recommendations for the management of migraine in paediatric patients.

Migraine is a common and disabling condition in children and adolescents. The complexity of migraine on a pathogenetic and clinical level results from the interaction between biological, psychological and environmental factors. Appropriate management requires an individually tailored strategy giving due consideration to both pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures. Ibuprofen (7.5-10.0 mg/kg) and acetaminophen (15 mg/kg) are safe and effective, and should be considered for symptomatic treatment. Sumatriptan nasal spray (5 and 20 mg) is also likely to be effective, but at the moment, sh

Phencyclidine - Effects on Human Performance and Behavior.

The history, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of phencyclidine hydrochloride (PCP) intoxication, the pharmacology of PCP and the detection, identification and analysis of PCP are reviewed. The history of PCP from its synthesis in the early 1950s to the present is discussed. Intoxication with low to moderate doses of PCP resembles an acute, confusing state. High doses may cause serious neurological and cardiovascular complications and the patient is often comatose for several days. Treatment involves supportive psychological and medical measures, and acidification of the urine may further incr

NANDA-I, NIC, NOC for Successful Aging in Older Adults with Risk for Imbalance Blood Pressure: Cross-Mapping.

BackgroundGlobal demographic shifts necessitate effective health management for older adults, with blood pressure variability indicating early adverse outcomes. Nurses require theory-guided care for optimal blood pressure management. This study aims to integrate NANDA-I, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) to support care for older adults diagnosed with "Risk for imbalanced blood pressure" from the perspective of the Multidimensional Model of Successful Aging (MMSA).MethodsThis descriptive study utilized an expert nurse consensus process, based

Mild cognitive impairment risk related to multiple functional impairments in older adults in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a critical transition stage toward dementia, making the identification of modifiable risk factors essential for early intervention. While individual conditions such as sensory loss, tooth loss, and psychological distress are independently linked to cognitive decline, their cumulative and combined longitudinal effects remain under-researched. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between the number and specific combinations of multiple functional impairments, including vision, hearing, tooth loss, and psychological distress, and the risk

Caregiver Burden in Head and Neck Cancer: The Combined Impact of Clinical Complexity and Psychological Distress.

Background/Objectives: Caregiver burden represents a critical yet under-integrated dimension of clinical care in head and neck cancer, where complex treatments and functional impairments impose substantial demands on informal caregivers. This study aimed to evaluate caregiver burden and to identify its clinical and psychological correlates among caregivers of patients with head and neck cancer. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study included 132 caregivers. Caregiver burden was assessed using the Zarit Burden Interview, and psychological distress was evaluated using the Hamilton Depre

Mental Health and Alcohol Consumption Among University Students in the Post-Pandemic Context: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study in Portugal.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic had significant effects on mental health and lifestyle behaviours, especially among university students who experienced academic disruptions, social isolation, and fewer social interactions. Alcohol consumption has long been part of student culture. Still, the influence of post-pandemic academic reintegration on drinking patterns and psychological distress remains relatively unexplored, particularly in countries like Portugal, where student traditions heavily shape consumption habits. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption, depres

Surrender, disidentification, and reappraisal: a qualitative comparison of psilocybin responders and non-responders in treatment-resistant OCD.

INTRODUCTION: Psilocybin treatment has shown promise for treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet clinical response is variable. Little is known about the subjective experiences associated with divergent outcomes or the psychological processes differentiating responders from non-responders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative case comparison was conducted using semi-structured interviews from six participants enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of single-dose psilocybin with psychological support for treatment-resistant OCD. Participants were purposively selected to

Predictors of Acute and Chronic PTSD in Road Trauma Survivors: Insights from a 12-Month Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The present study reports the prevalence of acute post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (2 months post-injury) and chronic PTSD symptoms (6 and 12 months post-injury) among road trauma survivors. We also examine baseline factors as potential predictors of acute and chronic PTSD symptoms post-injury. METHODS: This study followed a prospective cohort, enrolling 1480 survivors in Canada, between July 2018 and March 2020. PTSD symptoms were measured with the Post-traumatic Check-List Scale (PCL-S) at 2, 6, and 12 months post-injury. Baseline sociodemographic, psychological,

Prediction of healthcare utilization following an episode of physical therapy for musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, value-based purchasing has created the need for healthcare systems to prospectively identify patients at risk for high healthcare utilization beyond a physical therapy episode for musculoskeletal pain. The purpose of this study was to determine predictors of pain-related healthcare utilization subsequent to an index episode of physical therapy for musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: This study assessed data from the Optimal Screening for Prediction of Referral and Outcome (OSPRO) longitudinal cohort study that recruited individuals with a primary complaint of neck

Characteristics of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Sample Recruited Using Amazon's Mechanical Turk.

BACKGROUND: Several barriers exist in the recruitment of individuals with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current study is the first to examine whether crowdsourcing, which has been used in other clinical populations, is useful in the recruitment of those with mTBI. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk), an online crowdsourcing platform, is a useful tool in the recruitment of individuals with a history of mTBI and to examine the injury and psychological characteristics of individuals who report a history of mTBI. DESIGN: Retrospective, cross-sect

Detransition and Desistance Among Previously Trans-Identified Young Adults.

Persons who have renounced a prior transgender identification, often after some degree of social and medical transition, are increasingly visible. We recruited 78 US individuals ages 18-33 years who previously identified as transgender and had stopped identifying as transgender at least six months prior. On average, participants first identified as transgender at 17.1 years of age and had done so for 5.4 years at the time of their participation. Most (83%) participants had taken several steps toward social transition and 68% had taken at least one medical step. By retrospective reports, fewer

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder resources for educators: A scoping review.

Children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) can experience neurodevelopmental, physical, psychological and behavioural impairments that can result in a disrupted school experience. However, educators often have limited knowledge or experience in the identification and support of students with FASD, and there is a critical need for effective tools and resources to ensure students with FASD are supported in their ongoing learning and development. This scoping review aimed to identify and evaluate publicly available educator resources that aid in the identification, and support of stude

Differentiating network structures and sex differences of pain-related outcomes, analgesic opioid dosages, and psychosocial factors for postoperative management: a study of PAIN OUT registry in seven Asian regions.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in global healthcare, Asia lacks a systematic framework for postoperative pain-related symptoms, particularly in addressing pain identification/prevention and reporting sex differences. This study used network analysis to unravel the complex interplay of pain-related symptoms, analgesic opioid dosages, and psychosocial factors, with a particular focus on sex differences in the Asian population. METHODS: Utilizing anonymized data from 5,093 adult patients across seven Asian regions between 2018 and 2021 from the PAIN OUT registry, this study applied network ana

Neuroendocrine disturbances in women with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea: an update and future directions.

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is one of the most common causes of both primary and secondary amenorrhea in women of reproductive age. It is characterized by chronic anovulation and the absence of menses that appear as a result of stressors such as eating disorders, excessive exercise, or psychological distress. FHA is presumed to be a functional disruption in the pulsatile secretion of hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which in turn impairs the release of gonadotropin. Hypoestrogenism is observed due to the absence of ovarian follicle recruitment. Numerous neurotransmitte

Respiratory stridor and repressive defense style in adolescent somatoform disorders.

Three cases of adolescents with respiratory stridor of psychiatric etiology are described. All three fulfilled DSM-III-R criteria for diagnoses of somatoform disorders and showed characteristics of repressive defense style. Such patients are likely to undergo extensive medical investigation and treatment if the psychiatric nature of their disorder is not recognized, but few data describing their psychological characteristics or treatment exist. Repressors are typically unaware of emotional arousal and do not recognize the negative affects which lead to their somatic symptoms. They therefore re
