Neural basis of 3-D shape aftereffects.

We used selective adaptation to identify the neural mechanisms responsible for 3-D shape perception from orientation flows in retinal images [Li, A., & Zaidi, Q. (2000). Perception of three-dimensional shape from texture is based on patterns of oriented energy. Vision Research 40 (2), 217-242)]. Three-dimensional shape adaptation could involve stages from photoreceptors to non-oriented retinal cells, oriented cells in striate cortex, and extra-striate cells that respond to 3-D slants. To psychophysically isolate the relevant stage, we used 3-D adapting stimuli created from real and illusory or

Orientation and movement in unusual force environments.

A manned space mission to Mars might take as long as 1 year each way. Consequently, artificial gravity is being considered as a way of preventing the debilitating effects of long-duration exposure to microgravity on the human body. The present article discusses some of the problems associated with adapting to the rotation levels that might be used to generate artificial gravity. It also describes how exposure to background-force levels greater or less than the 1-G force of Earth gravity affects orientation and movement control. The primary emphasis of the article is that human movement and ori

Otolith functions in weightlessness.

The role of the vestibular organ in the exploration of space has been studied extensively during the past two decades. Many investigators have shown that some persons experience ill effects during the transition from the normal gravity to subgravity or weightlessness. Such adverse reactions can be related to a variety of sensory and somatic changes within the body systems; but it appears that the two major components of the unusual force field--namely, the absence of gravitational stimulation of the otolith organs and the occasional stimulation of the semicircular canals by head and body movem

Vibrotactile Phantom Sensations in Haptic Wrist Rotation Guidance.

Haptic motion guidance has the potential to advance assistive technologies that support humans in movement tasks. This study systematically evaluates wrist rotation guidance methods in a 2 × 2 repeated measures design using a wearable vibrotactile feedback device. In two tasks, we investigate the benefits of encoding the current target distance in the cue strength and conveying additional information about the target location by incorporating a tactile illusion known as phantom sensation. For a directional response task, we analyze reaction times and error rates, and for an angle targeting tas

Spatiotemporal dynamics of brightness coding in human visual cortex revealed by the temporal context effect.

Human visual perception is modulated by both temporal and spatial contexts. One type of modulation is apparent in the temporal context effect (TCE): In the presence of a constant luminance patch (a long flash), the perceived brightness of a short flash increases monotonically with onset asynchrony. The aim of the current study was to delineate the neural correlates of this illusory effect, particularly focusing on its dynamic neural representation among visual cortical areas. We reconstructed sources of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data recorded from observers (6 male and 9 female human adult

High level of pattern glare in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Visual deficits have been reported in abundance by recent studies on major depressive disorder. Pattern glare manifests as visual distortions, such as the symptoms of headache, glare, eyestrain, illusions of shapes, colors, and motion when viewing repetitive striped patterns, of which some can be observed in major depressive disorder. Inspired by what mentioned, the present study aims to explore whether there exists association between pattern glare and major depressive disorder and further attempts to explore possible clinical diagnostic value of pattern glare in major depressive …

Oscillatory brain mechanisms of the hypnotically-induced out-of-body experience.

One of the most challenging questions regarding the nature and neural basis of consciousness is the embodied dimension of the phenomenon, that is, feeling located within the body and viewing the world from that spatial perspective. Current theories in neurophysiology highlight the active role of multisensory and sensorimotor integration in supporting self-location and self-perspective, and propose the right temporal-parietal-junction (rTPJ) as a key area for such function. These theories are based mainly on findings from two experimental paradigms: manipulation of bottom-up multisensory inform

Frequency tagging yields an objective neural signature of Gestalt formation.

The human visual system integrates separate visual inputs into coherently organized percepts, going beyond the information given. A striking example is the perception of an illusory square when physically separated inducers are positioned and oriented in a square-like configuration (illusory condition). This illusory square disappears when the specific configuration is broken, for instance, by rotating each inducer (non-illusory condition). Here we used frequency tagging and electroencephalography (EEG) to identify an objective neural signature of the global integration required for illusory s

Influence of illusory kinesthesia by vibratory tendon stimulation on acute pain after surgery for distal radius fractures: a quasi-randomized controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of inducing an illusion of motion by tendon vibration on sensory and emotional aspects of pain and range of motion in patients with fractures of the distal radius. DESIGN: A quasi-randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Kawachi General Hospital, Japan. SUBJECTS: A total of 26 patients with fractures of the distal radius were distributed quasi-randomly to either the illusory kinesthesia group (n = 13) or control group (n = 13). INTERVENTION: The intervention was performed on seven consecutive days from postoperative Day 1. Evaluation was performed at se

Object motion continuity and the flash-lag effect.

When a visual object is briefly flashed, it appears to lag behind another moving object (flash-lag effect; FLE). Previous studies showed that a sudden change to the moving object at the time of the flash presentation would eliminate the FLE. We examined whether the FLE would be eliminated when a sudden color change was embedded in a sequence of color alternations on a moving object. Observers viewed a moving disc, the color of which did not change at all, changed only once when another stationary object flashed, or alternated regularly (Experiment 1) or randomly (Experiment 2) between two colo

Illusory control, gambling, and video gaming: an investigation of regular gamblers and video game players.

There is a paucity of empirical research examining the possible association between gambling and video game play. In two studies, we examined the association between video game playing, erroneous gambling cognitions, and risky gambling behaviour. One hundred and fifteen participants, including 65 electronic gambling machine (EGM) players and 50 regular video game players, were administered a questionnaire that examined video game play, gambling involvement, problem gambling, and beliefs about gambling. We then assessed each groups' performance on a computerised gambling task that involved real

Speaker overestimation of communication effectiveness and fear of negative evaluation: being realistic is unrealistic.

Speakers systematically overestimate their communication effectiveness (Keysar & Henly, 2002). We argue that doing so is adaptive, reducing the risk of social anxiety and withdrawal from social situations. This hypothesis was tested by having speakers who scored low and high for fear of negative evaluation (FNE), a hallmark of social phobia, attempt to convey a specific meaning of ambiguous statements to a listener and then estimate their communication effectiveness. Low-FNE speakers consistently overestimated their effectiveness, expecting the listener to understand their intended meaning mor

Computational analyses for illusory transformations in the optic flow field and heading perception in the presence of moving objects.

When we see a stimulus of a radial flow field (the target flow) overlapped with a lateral flow field or another radial flow field, the focus of expansion (FOE) of the target radial flow appears to be shifted in a direction. Royden and Conti [(2003). A model using MT-like motion-opponent operators explains an illusory transformation in the optic flow field. Vision Research, 43, 2811-2826] argued that local motion subtraction is crucial for explanation of this phenomenon. The flow field which causes the illusory displacement of FOE was computationally analyzed. It was shown that the flow field i

Illusory self-motion and motion sickness: a model for brain-gut interactions and nausea.

Motion sickness provides a unique setting for the study of nausea. Studies of illusory self-motion have linked nausea and objective measures of gastric dysrhythmias and the stress hormones vasopressin and epinephrine. Electrogastrographic methods utilize Ag-AgCl electrodes placed on the abdominal surface in the epigastric region to record electrogastrograms (EGGs), a noninvasive measure of gastric myoelectrical activity. The EGG frequencies of interest are the normal range (2.4-3.6 cpm), tachygastrias (3.6-9.9 cpm), and bradygastrias (1.0-2.4 cpm), and duodenal respiratory frequencies (10.0-15

Medical AI and Human Dignity: A Catholic Normative Ethical Framework in Light of Magnifica Humanitas.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping healthcare through advances in prediction and personalization, yet these developments also raise questions that are not merely technical but also are moral and religious. This article offers a normative framework for Catholic engagement with medical AI in light of Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas (2026). Drawing on the encyclical's critique of the "Babel Syndrome," we argue that medical AI is dehumanizing in two principal ways: first, through an idolatry of optimization that reduces the person to a data source; and second, through an illusion of a

Generative AI lacks the human creativity to achieve scientific discovery from scratch.

Scientists are interested in whether generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can make scientific discoveries similar to those of humans. However, the results are mixed. Here, we examine whether, how and what scientific discovery GenAI can make in terms of the origin of hypotheses and experimental design through the interpretation of results. With the help of a computer-supported molecular genetic laboratory, GenAI assumes the role of a scientist tasked with investigating a Nobel-worthy scientific discovery in the molecular genetics field. We find that current GenAI can make only incremental

Cocaine-induced Vasculitis: Uncommon Manifestations in the Lower Extremities - A Case Report.

Levamisole-induced vasculitis is a recognized dermatopathologic phenomenon frequently observed in individuals engaged in illicit substance use, particularly cocaine. Levimasole's structural resemblance to cocaine leads to its utilization as a cutting or bulking agent, creating an illusion of unaltered purity. While this vasculitis typically manifests in cartilaginous areas such as the ears and nose, it can also occur, though less commonly, in the lower extremities. At the time of writing, our case is the 3rd case of levamisole induced vasculitis to affect the lower extremities. The primary the

Hand Ownership Is Altered in Teenagers with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy.

We explored hand ownership in teenagers with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) compared with typically developing teenagers. Eighteen participants with UCP and 16 control teenagers participated. We used the rubber hand illusion to test hand ownership (HO). Both affected/non-affected hands (UCP) and dominant/non-dominant hands (controls) were tested during synchronous and asynchronous strokes. HO was assessed by measuring the proprioceptive drift toward the fake hand (as a percentage of arm length) and conducting a questionnaire on subjective HO. Both groups had significantly higher proprioceptiv

Lesions that mimic malignant tumors in nasopharyngeal biopsies: case series of 10 years.

INTRODUCTION: Lesions mimicking malignancies in the nasopharynx are frequently seen in adult patients. These include inflammatory, metaplastic, and cystic lesions. We aimed to draw attention to rare tumor-like lesions that can be confused with malignancies and cause diagnostic difficulties clinically and radiologically. METHODS: A total of 538 patients who underwent nasopharyngeal biopsy in our center between January 2010 and June 2020 were evaluated. Patient information was obtained from patient files and evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 19 of the 538 patients had tumor-like l
