Twenty-nine late chronic and accelerated phase chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) patients were entered in a pilot study designed to test the therapeutic efficacy of treatment with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and low-dose cytosine arabinoside (ARA-C). Spontaneous cytotoxicity and lymphokine augmented spontaneous cytotoxicity against Raji cells were tested in 7 patients with chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection in childhood. The results were as follows: Spontaneous cytotoxicity, tested by 4 hr assay, was 6.6 +/- 5.1% (mean +/- SD) in the patients and 13.9 +/- 9.6% in the controls, and the differences were statistically significant. INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the commonest cause of dementia; its aetiology is unknown and there is non-specific treatment to detain the course of the disease. BACKGROUND: Type 1 gastric carcinoids are associated with hypergastrinaemia and chronic atrophic gastritis, type 2 occur in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 combined with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and type 3 lack any relation to hypergastrinaemia.
